A problem of oil supply for a reciprocating compressor is very significant for an evaluation of reliability. Since a rotational motion of a crank shaft for the reciprocating compressor with small capacity is used for a power source of oil supply, a centrifugal force of the rotational shaft provides a stroke of oil inside the shaft like a centrifugal pump. The pumped oil rises following an inner wall and provided to a bearing passed through an oil supply hole at the side of the shaft for lubrication of the bearing. In this study, the amount of oil supply has been investigated by a numerical analysis for various conditions such as a shape of a groove, rpm of the compressor, and a shape of a flow channel. Also, a method of increasing oil supply for a low rpm has been studied so that the function can be improved for a variable condition.

This paper presents a simple thermo-physical model of reciprocating compressors for household refrigerator-freezers. The compressor model has been developed based on thermodynamic principles and large data sets from the compressor calorimeter tests. The input data are compressor geometry (displacement and clearance volume), compressor speed, suction pressure and temperature, discharge pressure, and ambient temperature. The model can estimate mass flow rate and compressor power consumption within 3.0% accuracy, which is not much larger than measurement errors associated with calorimeter testing under ideal conditions.

An analytical model was developed using the lumped mass parameter method to estimate temperature distribution of metal parts and refrigerant of the hermetic reciprocating compressor. All of the lumped mass has been equated with the first law of thermodynamics. In the delivered equation, correlations of heat transfer coefficient in the heat transfer equation were taken from open literature. The equations are solved by Gauss-Jordan method simultaneously. To verify the developed numerical program, an experiment was conducted with a domestic refrigerator. The compressor which had been installed at the bottom of the experimental refrigerator was modified to measure internal temperature. Model verification test was conducted at 30℃ outdoor temperature with variation of compressor cooling conditions. As a result, there is a good consistency between calculated temperature and measured one.

A new test rig is presented to measure friction losses at journal bearings in a reciprocating compressor. This rig consists of a test bearing, torque sensor, driving motor and loading parts especially for vertical shaft. Friction losses are obtained by measuring torque between motor and test bearing. The experiments are carried out at several rotational speeds and temperatures. The test results are presented and discussed.
