Aerodynamic analysis and control mechanism design of cycloidal wind turbine adopting active control of blade motion

In Seong Hwang,Yun Han Lee,Seung Jo Kim 한국항공우주학회 2007 International Journal of Aeronautical and Space Sc Vol.8 No.2

This paper describes the cycloidal wind turbine, which is a straight blade vertical axis wind turbine using the cycloidal blade system. Cycloidal blade system consists of several blades rotating about an axis in parallel direction. Each blade changes its pitch angle periodically. Cycloidal wind turbine is different from the previous turbines. The wind turbine operates with optimum rotating forces through active control of the blade to change pitch angle and phase angle according to the changes of wind direction and wind speed. Various numerical experiments were conducted to develop a small vertical axis wind turbine of 1 ㎾ class. For this numerical analysis, the rotor system equips four blades consisting of a symmetric airfoil NACA0018 of 1.0 m in span, 0.22 m in chord and 1.0 m in radius. A general purpose commercial CFD program, STAR-CD, was used for numerical analysis. PCL of MSC/PATRAN was used for efficient parametric auto mesh generation. Variables of wind speed, pitch angle, phase angle and rotating speed were set in the numerical experiments. The generated power was obtained according to the various combinations of these variables. Optimal pitch angle and phase angle of cycloidal blade system were obtained according to the change of the wind direction and the wind speed. Based on data obtained from the above analysis, control device was designed. The wind direction and the wind speed were sensed by a wind indicator and an anemometer. Each blades were actuated to optimal performance values by servo motors.

Wind loads and load-effects of large scale wind turbine tower with different halt positions of blade

        Shitang Ke,Wei Yu,Tongguang Wang,Lin Zhao,Yaojun Ge 한국풍공학회 2016 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.23 No.6

In order to investigate the influence of different blade positions on aerodynamic load and wind loads and load-effects of large scale wind turbine tower under the halt state, we take a certain 3 MW large scale horizontal axis three-blade wind turbine as the example for analysis. First of all, numerical simulation was conducted for wind turbine flow field and aerodynamic characteristics under different halt states (8 calculating conditions in total) based on LES (large eddy simulation) method. The influence of different halt states on the average and fluctuating wind pressure coefficients of turbine tower surface, total lift force and resistance coefficient, circular flow and wake flow characteristics was compared and analysed. Then on this basis, the time-domain analysis of wind loads and load-effects was performed for the wind turbine tower structure under different halt states by making use of the finite element method. The main conclusions of this paper are as follows: The halt positions of wind blade could have a big impact on tower circular flow and aerodynamic distribution, in which Condition 5 is the most unfavourable while Condition 1 is the most beneficial condition. The wind loads and load-effects of disturbed region of tower is obviously affected by different halt positions of wind blades, especially the large fluctuating displacement mean square deviation at both windward and leeward sides, among which the maximum response occurs in 350 to the tower top under Condition 8; the maximum bending moment of tower bottom occurs in 330 under Condition 2. The extreme displacement of blade top all exceeds 2.5 m under Condition 5, and the maximum value of windward displacement response for the tip of Blade 3 under Condition 8 could reach 3.35 m. All these results indicate that the influence of halt positions of different blades should be taken into consideration carefully when making wind-resistance design for large scale wind turbine tower.

Analysis of the effect of blade positions on the aerodynamic performances of wind turbine tower-blade system in halt states

        Ke, Shitang,Yu, Wei,Wang, Tongguang,Ge, Yaojun,Tamura, Yukio Techno-Press 2017 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.24 No.3

The unsteady flow field disturbance between the blades and tower is one of the primary factors affecting the aerodynamic performance of wind turbine. Based on the research object of a 3MW horizontal axis wind turbine which was developed independently by Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, numerical simulation on the aerodynamic performance of wind turbine system in halt state with blades in different position was conducted using large eddy simulation (LES) method. Based on the 3D unsteady numerical simulation results in a total of eight conditions (determined by the relative position with the tower during the complete rotation process of the blade), the characteristics of wind pressure distributions of the wind turbine system and action mechanism of surrounding flow field were analysed. The effect of different position of blades on the aerodynamic performance of wind turbine in halt state as well as the disturbance effect was evaluated. Results of the study showed that the halt position of blades had significant effect on the wind pressure distribution of the wind turbine system as well as the characteristics of flow around. Relevant conclusions from this study provided reference for the wind-resistant design of large scale wind turbine system in different halt states.

Flutter study of flapwise bend-twist coupled composite wind turbine blades

Touraj Farsadi,Altan Kayran 한국풍공학회 2021 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.32 No.3

Bending-twisting coupling induced in big composite wind turbine blades is one of the passive control mechanisms which is exploited to mitigate loads incurred due to deformation of the blades. In the present study, flutter characteristics of bend-twist coupled blades, designed for load alleviation in wind turbine systems, are investigated by time-domain analysis. For this purpose, a baseline full GFRP blade, a bend-twist coupled full GFRP blade, and a hybrid GFRP and CFRP bend-twist coupled blade is designed for load reduction purpose for a 5 MW wind turbine model that is set up in the wind turbine multi-body dynamic code PHATAS. For the study of flutter characteristics of the blades, an over-speed analysis of the wind turbine system is performed without using any blade control and applying slowly increasing wind velocity. A detailed procedure of obtaining the flutter wind and rotational speeds from the time responses of the rotational speed of the rotor, flapwise and torsional deformation of the blade tip, and angle of attack and lift coefficient of the tip section of the blade is explained. Results show that flutter wind and rotational speeds of bend-twist coupled blades are lower than the flutter wind and rotational speeds of the baseline blade mainly due to the kinematic coupling between the bending and torsional deformation in bend-twist coupled blades.

Design optimization of a wind turbine blade to reduce the fluctuating unsteady aerodynamic load in turbulent wind

        Jeong, Ji-Hoon,Park, Kyung-Hyun,Jun, Sang-Ook,Song, Ki-Sun,Lee, Dong-Ho 대한기계학회 2012 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.26 No.3

Design optimization of the wind turbine of a NREL 1.5-MW HAWT blade was studied to minimize the fluctuation of the bending moment of the blade in turbulent wind. In order to analyze the unsteady aerodynamic load of a wind turbine, FAST code was used as the analysis code. To consider turbulent wind as the wind input model in FAST, TurbSim was used as a turbulent wind simulator. For effective geometrical representation of the aerodynamic shape of a wind turbine blade, the shape modeling function was used to represent the chord length and twist angle. The fluctuation of the out-of-plane bending moment at the blade root was minimized by maintaining the required power of the wind turbine. Through the redistribution of the section force in the radial direction between both the primary and tip regions, the magnitude of the fluctuation of the out-of-plane bending moment was reduced by about 20%, and the rated power of 1.5-MW was maintained. The local angles of attack for the optimized blade were near the point of the maximum lift-to-drag ratio in the primary and tip regions compared to the baseline blade. The fluctuating unsteady aerodynamic load in the optimized blade was reduced within the operating range of the wind speed. With the optimized blade shape, the wind turbine can be operated with decreased fluctuating aerodynamic loads and have a longer life in turbulent wind.

Vol.14 No.4

This paper presents the structural model development and verification processes of wind turbine blade. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Phase VI wind turbine which the wind tunnel and structural test data has publicly available is used for the study. The wind turbine assembled by blades, rotor, nacelle and tower. The wind blade connected to rotor. To make the whole turbine structural model, the mass and stiffness properties of all parts should be clear and given. However the wind blade, hub, nacelle, rotor and power generating machinery parts have difficulties to define the material properties because of the composite and assembling nature of that. Nowadays to increase the power generating coefficient and cost efficiency, the highly accurate aerodynamic loading evaluating technique should be developed. The Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) is the emerging new way to evaluate the aerodynamic force on the rotating wind blade. To perform the FSI analysis, the fluid and structural model which are sharing the associated interface topology have to be provided. In this paper, the structural model of blade development and verifying processes have been explained for Part1. In following Part2 paper, the processes of whole turbine system will be discussing.

Dynamic behavior of smart material embedded wind turbine blade under actuated condition

Yuvaraja Mani,Jagadeesh Veeraragu,Sangameshwar S.,Rudramoorthy Rangaswamy 한국풍공학회 2020 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.30 No.2

Vibrations of a wind turbine blade have a negative impact on its performance and result in failure of the blade, therefore an approach to effectively control vibration in turbine blades are sought by wind industry. The small domestic horizontal axis wind turbine blades induce flap wise (out-of-plane) vibration, due to varying wind speeds. These flap wise vibrations are transferred to the structure, which even causes catastrophic failure of the system. Shape memory alloys which possess physical property of variable stiffness across different phases are embedded into the composite blades for active vibration control. Previously Shape memory alloys have been used as actuators to change their angles and orientations in fighter jet blades but not used for active vibration control for wind turbine blades. In this work a GFRP blade embedded with Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) and tested for its vibrational and material damping characteristics, under martensitic and austenite conditions. The embedment portrays 47% reduction in displacement of blade, with respect to the conventional blade. An analytical model for the actuated smart blade is also proposed, which validates the harmonic response of the smart blade.
