Guidelines for Writing the Setup Operation Manual

In order to satisfy various desires of consumers, a company should produce a variety of products and the production lot size should be as small as possible inevitably. Then, it requires frequent setup works for the model changes. Since setup works are usually carried out after stopping the operation of the equipment, we must minimize the time required for setup works. Major companies are continuously shortening the setup time over the technical guidance from the leading companies, such as Toyota and their own improvement activities up until now. But small and medium-sized(S&M) companies rely on skills and experience of individual engineers due to lack of the personnel and budget. In this paper, we propose systematic guidelines for writing the setup operation manual to support S&M companies. Major functions of the guidelines are drawing process charts specialized in the setup operation, separating the external and internal setup operations, and minimizing internal setup operations. By utilizing the guidelines, it is expected that S&M companies can prepare and apply their own setup operation manual with a minimum of manpower and money. Then, they can manage setup works in a more efficient and reduce the setup time and lower the production cost.

The minimum size of specimen for measuring sound reduction index on KS F 2860(ISO 140-1) should be at least 10㎡. However, it takes many time and efforts to install full size specimen. Therefore, it is valuable to study the sound reduction index with a small sized specimen. The purpose of this study is to investigate the sound reduction index of small sized specimen and to compare with that of full size specimen. Measurement were carried out in acoustic chamber according to change of specimen setup condition, shape of aperture and structure of filler element. As a specimen, lightweight panel and gypsum board were used. The result shows that it is valuable to use small sized specimen in the case of the specimen with a low sound reduction index such as single panel structure or reinforced filler element with a high sound reduction index.

Intelligent investment in setup cost reduction and process reliability improvement is crucial to an emerging integrated lean six sigma practice today. This study examines a cost-minimizing problem of jointly determining production lot size, setup cost reduction, and process reliability improvement decisions for a manufacturer with an imperfect production process. We develop models for previously untapped discrete shipping in a supply chain context as well as continuous shipping and solve them optimally using differential calculus and nonlinear programming. We also conduct analytic and numerical sensitivity analyses to provide various important managerial insights into practices.
Designing a Coordinated Setup Cost Reduction Program of a Supply Chain

This paper contributes by incorporating works addressing supply chain coordination and investing in setup reduction program. Consider a two-echelon, EOQ-like inventory system consisting of a supplier and a buyer. We assume that both the supplier and the buyer can invest in setup cost reduction programs in order to benefit from small order sizes. However, the costs of investing in setup cost reduction programs are different for the two parties, leading to mismatches in individually optimal setup costs and order cycle times. We propose a supply chain coordination contract that makes use of quantity discount as an incentive transfer scheme for supply chain coordination.

In KS F 2860, the area of test opening for measurement of airborne sound insulation in a laboratory should be approximately 10㎡ for specimen. However, measurement of sound reduction index (SRI) using 10㎡ specimen has many disadvantages such as specimen setup time. So, in the early stage of sound insulation design for building element, it would be useful to install the small-sized specimen. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the sound insulation of single lightweight panels by the specimen size which is considered to occur the first resonance frequency below 100 ㎐. In the current study, sound insulation measurements were performed on 7 small-sized specimens in accordance with the variation of panel thickness and density, and SRI between small-sized and standard-size specimens was compared for 3 specimens. The result showed that the single-number quantities of small-sized panel were similar to that of 10.5 ㎡ standard-size panels within 2 ㏈. In the case of 7 single panels, the single-number quantities (Rw) showed in the range from 37 to 44 ㏈. SRI of the small-sized panels below critical frequency didn't show the mass law because of the variation of boundary condition and radiation efficiency.

The reduction of setup time is very important in a lot production system. A punch press is a typical system of lot production. This paper describes a case study to reduce setup time of a punch press manufacturing system. Especially, this case study reduced the time of die exchange in the case that the standardization of die height is impossible realistically because of diversity on die height and heavy expenses. This study adopts a supplementary die and supplementary blocks to make the use of auto-clamping device possible. The paper also gives a sequencing algorithm to reduce the number of exchange of the supplementary die.

This paper develops a two-echelon supply chain model with variable setup cost and environmental impact. A single-setup-multi-delivery (SSMD) policy is adopted to increase the efficiency of transportation in the supply chain in which it is assumed that the shipment lot size of each delivery is unequal and variable. Each delivered item goes through inspection process at the buyer’s end. After inspection, defective products are returned to the vendor for reworking process. Due to inspection process, end customers receives perfect quality items. Due to more transportations by SSMD policy, this model assumes carbon emission cost to help the world environment. An investment function is used to reduce total setup cost for the whole supply chain. Stackelberg leadership approach is utilized in this model to optimize the joint total cost of vendor and buyer. Finally, some numerical examples, sensitivity analysis, and graphical representations are given to illustrate more savings from existing literature.

The paper presents a Bayesian Finite element (FE) model updating methodology by utilizing modal data. The dynamic condensation technique is adopted in this work to reduce the full system model to a smaller model version such that the degrees of freedom (DOFs) in the reduced model correspond to the observed DOFs, which facilitates the model updating procedure without any mode-matching. The present work considers both the MPV and the covariance matrix of the modal parameters as the modal data. Besides, the modal data identified from multiple setups is considered for the model updating procedure, keeping in view of the realistic scenario of inability of limited number of sensors to measure the response of all the interested DOFs of a large structure. A relationship is established between the modal data and structural parameters based on the eigensystem equation through the introduction of additional uncertain parameters in the form of modal frequencies and partial mode shapes. A novel sampling strategy known as the Metropolis-within-Gibbs (MWG) sampler is proposed to sample from the posterior Probability Density Function (PDF). The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated by considering both simulated and experimental examples.
