Vol.31 No.1

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of diminished cutaneous sensation of forefoot with ice application on the Y-Balance Test in male compared to female. 12 healthy subjects (6 males and 6 females) were participated. Subjects performed Y-Balance Tests consisting of the anterior, posteromedial, and posterolateral reach directions before and after 20 mins of icepack application on forefoot. The first 3 successful trials of normalized reach distance were recorded. Three-way ANOVA was conducted to determine the interaction of gender, direction, and time. There was a significant difference in the normalized reach distance of YBT between pre and post ice application regardless of the directions and among the three directions regardless of ice application. However, there was no significant difference of the interaction. In conclusion, balance could not be only affected by decreased cutaneous sensation of whole bottom of foot but also forefoot.

Kim, Y.S., Park, S.V., K. H.J., Suk, M.H., Oh, J.W. The effect of the disk training and the combined training on functional stability of ankles. Exercise Science, 13(1): 113-124, 2004. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the disk training on the functional stability of ankles and compare the variable with the combined training composed of isometric contraction, isotonic contraction using weight, balance training and plyometric training. The forty subjects without medical history on their lower extremities were participated in this study. The subjects were divided into 3 groups such as, control group(n=14), disk training(n=11) or combined training(n=15). All subjects completed Romberg test for static stability and SEBT test for dynamic stability of ankles. After 6-week training, they completed the tests with same manner again. Exercise groups trained the exercise program for 6 weeks and the volume of exercise are increased per 2 weeks. The Romberg tests for static stability of ankles demonstrated that disk training group is significantly increased on left legs(from 16.4±18.2sec to 36.0±32.3sec), and night legs(from 16.0±10.8sec to 41.3±47.7sec) are increased but not statistically significant. combined training group is significantly increased on left legs(from 18.6±16.7sec to 70.4±44.1sec) and right legs(from 27.0±3l.6sec to 61.7±46.1sec). In comparison between two trained groups, combined training group is more increased than disk training group. But there are not statistical difference. The SEBT tests for dynamic stability of ankles demonstrated that disk training group(except for anteriolateral and anteriomedial directions on both legs) and combined training group(except for anterior direction on night legs) are significantly increased at almost directions. In comparison between two trained groups, combined training group is more increased than disk training group, But there are not statistical difference.

Vol.2017 No.11

Dynamic balance is an ability to maintain stable position while performing various tasks and it has been reported that dynamic balance associated with athletic performance and injury risks. The purpose of study was to examine the effect of core strength on dynamic balance. Nineteen males completed 10-week core training interventions. To test the core strength, a trunk endurance test was used. During this test, the plank and side-plank positions were maintained for as long as possible. The star excursion balance test (SEBT) were conducted before and after core training to measure the dynamic balance. Plank records and SEBT parameters were compared using a paired Student’s t-tests at a significance level of 0.05. Greater plank and left/right side plank record were found in post-training (p=0.008, p=0.049, and p=0.007 respectively), thus the core muscle strength increased after training. As the SEBT results, greater anterior, anteromedial, medial, posteromedial, posterior, posterolateral reach distances were found between pre- and post-training, but there was no significant differences in lateral and anterolateral distances. These results indicate that strengthening of core muscle increase the dynamic balance, thereby it positively affected in lower extremity injury risk.

Vol.33 No.2

Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the effect of strength training targeting medial quadriceps/hamstrings and non-targeting strength training on dynamic balance. Method: A total of 51 healthy subjects were randomly assigned to control, targeting strength training, or non-targeting training groups. To measure the dynamic balance, the star excursion balance test (SEBT) was performed before and after training. The SEBT parameters were compared using repeated measures ANOVA, and post-hoc paired t test at a significance level of 0.05. Results: Greater anterior (p= .011), anteromedial (p= .001), medial (p< .001), lateral (p< .001), and anterolateral (p= .001) reach distances were found between pre- and post-training in the strength training targeting medial thigh muscles group. Only greater lateral reach distance was found after non-targeting strength training (p= .029). In addition, no differences were found for any SEBT scores in the control group. Conclusion: Strength training targeting medial quadriceps and hamstrings can improve the dynamic balance, thereby it positively affected in lower extremity injury risk, whereas non- targeting strength training rarely changes the dynamic balance.
