2009 Clinical and Experimental Pediatrics (CEP) Vol.52 No.7

This paper aims to provide an introduction to junior authors on how to write a medical paper in a clearer and more scientific manner. One important thing to be always remembered is that the reviewer and the reader will be reading your paper for the first time, and thus, you should make it as lucid as possible. You should pay attention to consistency in every regard in your paper. Use of the active voice usually makes the sentences shorter and clearer in meaning. Organize your content carefully and present it logically, avoiding unnecessary repetition in different sections. Give a diligent thought to every aspect; research is a work of the mind, not of the hands. Write technically, using powerful language. Most importantly, fulfill the exact submission requirements of the journal.

        Inhye Cha,Seung-In Kim Vol.2 No.2

The purpose of this study is to analyze the present condition of medication guidance provided by the visually handicapped people in Korea and to examine the future plan. Despite the fact that non-disabled and disabled people are paying the same amount of medication, visually impaired people do not get help when they actually take medicine, so they are in a blind spot of medication. This study analyzed the cases of braille notation provided for Korean medicines and conducted literature research on previous studies. In addition, by studying the difference of the domestic and overseas visually impaired medicine guidance, it was able to clearly draw the direction of the medicine guidance that blind people should receive. In addition, there should be a policy and various researches to suggest the right direction for non-disabled persons to receive medical services.

Vol.37 No.1

This study analyzes the medical advice column “Jisang byeongwon(紙 上病院, hospital on paper),” which was published in one of the major newspapers in colonial Korea, Dong-A Ilbo, during the 1930s. We aim to capture and demonstrate the body image and medical knowledge of the Korean public. Various advice and consultation columns appeared in newspapers during the 1930s, to communicate with the public and encourage the participation of readers. Among them, the medical advice column “Jisang byeongwon” was popular, because it featured direct counseling with medical professionals.“Jisang byeongwon” appeared 1,597 times including advice for a total of 3,888 cases. A wide variety of people submitted their medical problems. In terms of sex, male(2,142) appeared two times as much as female(988). The age of the contributors were mostly from the late teens to thirties, though a 20 day-old baby and 80 year-old women also participated. The most frequent medical problems were “neurasthenia”(180) and “gonorrhea”(115). The rest were parasitic disease, syphilis, hemorrhoids, acne, rhinitis, hair loss, otitis media, urine problem, and leucorrhea. “Jisang byeongwon” was a sort of public arena, which revealed the acceptance, transmission, and interaction of medical knowledge. The readers publicly questioned the popular beliefs of disease, body and remedies, and were reassured by the medical knowledge disbursed by the physicians. Meanwhile, the editors announced the submission rule, which included the appropriate style of questioning and description of symptoms. It trained the readers as “modern patients.” The column also provided opportunities to take home-made Western-style remedies. Moreover, the medical knowledge was not only transferred from medical professionals to patients, but was also translated from the patients to medical professionals through counseling. It shows that although Western medicine was promoted as modern knowledge during the colonial period, it involved a repetitive and insecure process of the acceptance, interpretion, and reinterpretion.

Vol.23 No.2

This research note examines the development and meaning of the Catholic Church’s medical enlightenment activities in the Japanese colonial period. Before and after the turn of the 20th century, enlightenment activities to spread new information became active in Korea, resulting from the country’s incorporation into the world order. Not only the political system, but also everyday life was no longer the same, and media such as magazines and newspapers became popular means of informing on and knowing the new world. The Catholic Church was one actor that took the lead in spreading new cultures to colonial Korea by publishing magazines and newspapers such as the Kyeong Hyang Shinmun, Kyeong Hyang Magazine, and Catholic Youth. The circulation of medical information and paper consultations were at the center of the Catholic Church’s activities. It provided medical information, such as the concept and treatment of diseases, while also conducting medical consultations that “listened” to individuals’ symptoms and gave prescriptions accordingly. This series of activities was largely divided into four stages. First, folk remedies were considered part of the information necessary for everyday life through the “Various Problems” section of Kyeong Hyang Magazine. Next, the basics of medicine were covered as part of the knowledge on Western natural sciences in the magazine’s “Science” section. Then, Kyeong Hyang Magazine published the “Sanitation” section, which exclusively addressed medicine, in a series, and finally, Catholic Youth conveyed the basics of Western medicine while conducting paper consultations. The Catholic Church’s medical enlightenment was the result of the overlapping interests of the Catholic Church, the general Korean public, and the Japanese Government-General, colonial Korea’s three main agents of producing, consuming, and managing new information. First, the Church’s medical enlightenment distributed the knowledge that the general public “wanted to know.” In colonial Korea, medical personnel were scarce, so magazines and newspapers were useful windows to obtaining medical information and consulting on the physical condition of the body. The Church also presented the knowledge that it itself “wanted to inform”. Small dispensaries could not meet the medical needs of many, so mass media was a promising alternative. Lastly, the Catholic Church delivered knowledge “permitted” by the Japanese Government-General, as the dissemination of medical information did not threaten the legitimacy of colonial rule and helped develop colonial Korea. From the position of the Governor-General, the Catholic Church’s medical enlightenment activities were thus recommendable.

Vol.- No.20

This paper aims to present the use patterns of medical terminology by investigating its compliance with the English-Korean, Korean-English Medical Terminology. Medical terminologies in a total of 20 papers, 5 each in the field of internal medicine, dermatology, plastic surgery and surgery are examined and compared to the ones suggested in English-Korean, Korean-English Medical Terminology. The result indicates that (1) the usage of terminology shows different patterns in terms of compliance rate; (2) the compliance rate is fairly low in the field of plastic surgery due to the inclusion of anatomy terms; (3) sino-Korean words are strongly preferred to native ones in the case of synonyms; (4) a great number of sino-Korean words reappeared in the 5th edition of Medical Terminology, leading to mistrust and concern for settlement of native terms; (5) terms not included in Medical Terminology implies that the basic forms of terminologies, considering the productivity, need to be set in the publishing process. This research finally asserts the importance of dissemination of appropriate medical terminologies as well as creation of easy alternative ones.

The purpose of this paper is to find out the level of awareness of taping therapy in Korea that has changed since Arikawa teacher began to instruct on taping to Korea. in order to achieve the purpose of this research, papers written on the subject of taping therapy in Korea were surveyed, organized, and analyzed at four major sites, and the level of awareness of taping therapy was investigated through questionnaires. The paper survey was conducted on papers searched by the search term “taping” among papers published from 2011 to 2022. In the above survey, a total of 434 papers were searched, including 229 academic journal papers, 23 doctoral dissertations, and 182 master's thesis. This is an increase of 218% compared to 94 papers published from 1998 to 2010. Among doctoral thesis, papers related to physical therapy increased more than four times, and papers related to sprots field is also increased. This means that although the Utilization of use of taping therapy in sports field is increasing, the use of taping therapy in physical therapy is still superior. The survey was conducted from August 1st to August 31st, 2023 to a total of 120 people, 58 men and 62 women, to find out the current state of application of taping therapy, current state of learning, and awareness of the method. Through the above survey, 91% of taping treatments were performed free of charge, which may be due to the fact that it is not yet recognized as a new medical technology in South Korea. In addition, the greater part of taping lectures were aimed at first- and second-year students at university who learned taping therapy through seminars and special lectures, so there was concern that the educational level of taping was insufficent. The application of this appears to be at an extremely rudimentary stage. Also, when we see that people know kinesio taping, but do not know ``gasegenzo taping'', and know orthopedic taping, but do not know the Arikawa taping method, so we concerned that taping therapy education is mainly focused on practical skills. As a result results, after Arikawa started teaching about taping to South Koreans the number of papers increased by 218%, showing significant results. However, there is still a need for a better understanding of taping approach methods, further research on the classification of taping approach methods, and a need for courses aimed at clinical experts.
