        해방 전 기독교 선교사를 위한 조선어교육에 관한 기록의 발굴

        This research marks the initial step toward the research on Korean language education for Christian missionaries in the colonial period. There have been some discussions on Korean language education for Christian missionaries in the field of History of Korean Language Education. Yet these do not go beyond mere conjecture, and there have not been any study which is supported by historical evidence. By using a meeting record, Annual Meeting of the Federal Council Protestant Evangelical Missions and a journal, The Korea Mission Field, both published by the Federal Council Protestant Evangelical Missions, this research managed to show that there in fact was a Korean “Language School” at least between 1920 and 1936. With the same materials, there search also made clear the educational system of the “Language School” and its educational curriculum, which under went changes five times, as well as the text books used and their transformation. Korean language education of this time is considered to have been terminated after 1942, when the Pacific War occurred and missionaries were chased away from Korean Peninsula. However, it is considered that after the liberation Korean language education was resumed for the missionaries returned to, and newly coming to, Korean Peninsula. It is also probable that this may have some connection with the establishment of Yonsei University Korean Language Institute, where the so-called “modern” Korean language education started. Further research is expected to be done on this historical continuity.

        1950-60년대 학습자가 인식한 한국어교육 환경 연구 -개신교 선교사 학습자를 중심으로-

The Language and Culture 13-2: 1-26. This study is to present a vivid picture of the Korean language education environment in the 1950-60s, particularly from the learners’ perspective. An in-depth interview was adapted as the research method. Since the majority of Korean language learners during this period were Protestant missionaries from the USA, six former missionaries who participated in Korean language education at formal Korean language institutions were interviewed respectively. Among the participants, two of them were with the Korean Language School(KLS) in the 1950s and the remaining four with Yonsei Korean Language Institute(KLI) in the 1960s. The interviews revealed three major agents of Korean language education environment during this period that had influenced the participants’ learning experience: the missionary orientation programs in the USA, Korean language institutions in Korea and the language committee of the various mission organizations in Korea. Firstly, the participants’ experiences with the above mentioned agents were elaborated to describe the ‘macro view’ of the Korean language education environment. Secondly, the features of the two domestic Korean language education programs during this period were analyzed to present the ‘micro view’ of the Korean language education environment.(Yonsei University)

        1950년대 국내 한국어교육에서 개신교 선교단체의 역할에 대한 사적 고찰 -한국어교육 주체의 변화 과정을 중심으로-

        This study is to discover how Protestant mission organizations in Korea had influenced the foundation and the development of the Korean Language Institute of Yonsei University in 1950s. Foreign protestant mission organizations in Korea founded a Korean language school for newly-arrived missionaries in 1920. Since then, the Korean language education in Korea was mainly led by foreign protestant missionaries, whereas the role of Korean native instructors was very minimal and therefore had been almost unknown. However, various meeting minutes, official reports and correspondences from the two leading mission organizations, North Presbyterians and Methodists, proved that there was, in fact, considerable contribution by Korean native instructors in the development of the Korean language programs for foreign missionaries throughout 1950s. Firstly, this paper reveals the change of the role of Korean native instructors in the Korean language education for foreign missionaries in 1950s. Secondly, the identities of two cooperative committees, the Language Consultation Committee and the Language Course Committee, are introduced in the context of the discussion concerning the Korean language programs for foreign missionaries in Yonsei University. Lastly, the list of requests to Yonsei University by the mission organizations representing missionary learners is identified.

        초기의 연세 한국어학당과 기독교 선교부의 관계

        This study examines the relationship between the Korean Language Institute (KLI), established at Yonsei University after 1959, and the Korea Inter-Mission Language Committee (KIMLC), which represented the Protestant missions in Korea at the time. The existence of the KIMLC and its relationship with the KLI had not been reported until now. The evidence for this study is primarily found in records collected from the archives of the Presbyterian Historical Society. These records indicate that the KIMLC was the successor to the Yonsei Language School Consultation Committee, which was responsible for establishment of the Korean Language Institute at Yonsei University and qualified as the official agent for Korean language learning for missionaries. Futhermore, I discovered that KIMLC was actively involved with KLI through the mid-1960s, advising, participating in, and auditing KLI's Korean language programs. Moreover, from the late 1960s onward, as KLI expanded its language education programs, the KIMLC's role in teaching Korean to missionaries diminished, thus allowing KLI to develop into a more independent institution.
