2010 PNF and Movement Vol.8 No.1

Purpose : The purpose of this study is to ascertain whether age, body mass index(BMI) and exercise frequency(EF) are correlated with knee joint position sense in healthy women. Methods : Healthy women of 150 who participated in this study were tested knee joint position sense; each reposition error was analyzed according to the age, BMI and EF. Reposition error was measured with a Myrin goniometer. Results : The age groups, BMI groups and EF groups demonstrated significant differences of the knee joint position sense. The older the healthy women are, the higher BMI is, and the lower EF is, the more decreased knee joint position sense has become. Conclusion : The older the women are, the higher BMI is, and the lower EF is, the more decreased the knee joint position sense in healthy women is. Therefore it needs to be considered to require management of obesity and regular exercise for prevention of knee injuries due to decreased joint position sense.

Vol.29 No.5

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of cryotherapy time on the skin temperature and joint position sense after exercise-induced muscle fatigue of Shoulder Joint in 20 university baseball players. The subjects of this study (n=20) participated in three trials, which included an non-cryotherapy, a 5 minutes cryotherapy, and a 10 minutes cryotherapy. Statistical analysis showed that the temperature of the shoulder skin was 34.32 ± 2.53 ℃ in the non-cryotherapy and the absolute error was 10.95 ± 2.65° in the shoulder joint position sense. In the case of 5 minutes cryotherapy, the skin temperature of the shoulder skin was 20.74±2.37 ℃, which was significantly lower than that of non-cryotherapy. The absolute error of the knee joint position sense was 8.50 ± 1.00°, which was significantly lower than that of the non-cryotherapy and 10-minute cryotherapy. On the other hand, the skin temperature of the shoulder skin was 16.11. ± 1.94 ℃ for 10-minute cryotherapy, and it was significantly lower than the non-cryotherapy and 5 minutes cryotherapy. The absolute error of the shoulder joint position sense was 10.05 ± 1.90°, which was significantly higher than that of 5-minute cryotherapy. Therefore, it is considered appropriate to apply cryotherapy less than 10 minutes in order to prevent a decrease in the sense of joint position in sporting events.

Vol.19 No.4

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of proprioceptive exercise program on motor function of lower limb in male soccer players of ankle joint. 29 male soccer players divided into three groups: Control group(CON, n=10); Strength exercise group(SEG, n=9); Proprioceptive exercise group(PEG, n=10). The various kinds of test were performed before and after the strength and proprioceptive exercise training to each group for eight weeks. The results are as follows; 1. Joint position sense test was significant improved after exercise group than before group. Passive joint position sense test was significantly decreased at eversion(F=5.486, p=.01), active position sense test was significantly decreased at dorsi flexion(F=10.349, p=.001), inversion(F=3.950, p=0.31). 2. Subtalar joint ROM test was significant difference measured neutral position(F=10.173, p=.001) and forefoot angle to rearfoot(F=5.417, p=.011). 3. Posture sway test was significantly difference overall index(F=4.666, p=.019) and medial/lateral index(F=6.685, p=.005). Consequently, this study suggests that the proprioceptive exercise better than strength exercise improved the sensory ability of joint position sense, subtalar joint ROM and posture sway.

Vol.22 No.3

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of multi joint-joint position sense (MJ-JPS) training on joint position sense, balance, and gait ability in stroke patients. A total of 18 stroke patients participated in the study. The subjects were allocated randomly into two groups: an experimental group and a control group. Participants in the experimental group received MJ-JPS training (10 min) and conventional treatment (20 min), but participants in the control group only received conventional treatment (30 min). Both groups received training for five times per week for six weeks. MJ-JPS is a training method used to increase proprioception in the lower extremities; as such, it is used, to position the lower extremities in a given space. MJ-JPS measurement was captured via video using a Image J program to calculate the error distance. Balance ability was measured using Timed Up and Go (TUG) and the Berg Balance Scale (BBS). Gait ability was measured with a 10 m walking test (10MWT) and by climbing four flights of stairs. The Shapiro-Wilk test was used to assess normalization. Within-group differences were analyzed using the paired t-test. Between-group differences were analyzed using the independent t-test. The experimental group showed a significant decrease in error distance (MJ-JPS) compared to the control group (p<.05). Both groups showed a significant difference in their BBS and 10MWT results (p<.05). The experimental group showed a significant decrease in their TUG and climbing results (p<.05), but the control group results for those two tasks were not found to be significant (p>.05). There was significant difference in MJ-JPS and by climbing four flights of stairs on variation of pre and post test in between groups (p<.05), but TUG and BBS and 10MWT was no significantly (p>.05). We suggest that the MJ-JPS training proposed in this study be used as an intervention to help improve the functional activity of the lower extremities in stroke patients.

The Inf luence of Hand Muscle Fatigue and Fatigue Recovery on Joint Position Sense in Healthy Subjects

Vol.26 No.6

Purpose: The first purpose of this study was to evaluate whether hand muscle fatigue alters sensorimotor control of the hand in healthy subjects, using hand position sense. The second objective was to assess the repositioning variables during a 7.5-min period after the fatigue protocol. Methods: Participants performed a repeated handgrip movement to induce the fatigue condition as fast as possible, until they could no longer continue. Recordings were performed before (pre-fatigue) and after the completion of the fatigue exercises (immediately: post-fatigue, after a 2.5 min recovery, after a 5 min recovery and after a 7.5 min recovery). Results: The joint reposition test of the MP joint in the post-fatigue condition showed higher reposition errors than the pre-fatigue condition (p<0.05). Additionally, there was a significant difference in recovery of joint reposition errors after fatiguing exercises of the hand muscle, among groups (p<0.05). Conclusion: The fatigue of the hand muscles affected joint position sense by an alteration of somatosensory and proprioceptive information. Nonetheless, the effect of hand muscle fatigue was short-lived, since joint reposition errors decreased to post-fatigue values after 7.5 min of recovery.
