Vol.15 No.4

Objectives : The meridian muscle theory is similar to the myofascial meridian theory. According to the myofascial meridian theory, muscle tension can travel from one part of the body to the other part though the fascia. We assumed that the same theory can be applied to the meridian muscle. So we hypothesize that stretching of plantar fascia, a part of Chok-t`aeyang meridian muscle, will effect the tension of erector spinae muscle and hamstring muscle which is the other part of Chok-t`aeyang meridian muscle. Methods : 30 persons with neither spinal disorder nor back pain were randomized into two groups : 16 samples and 14 controls. Every person measured finger-to-floor method(FFM) distance, C7-S1 process distance, and left and right passive leg straight raising(SLR) angle. In the sample group, plantar fascia was stretched for 5 minites. In the control group, plantar fascia was not stretched. 5 minutes later, every person had taken a measurement as previously measured. Results : In the both sample and control group, muscle tension of erector spinae muscle and left and right hamstring muscle had significantly decreased. And in the sample group, muscle tension of erector spinae muscle and left and right hamstring muscle had more significantly decreased than in the control group. Conclusions : Muscle tension can travel from one part of the body to the other part of the body though the meridian muscle.

Analysis of Changes in Muscle Tone, Stiffness, and Flexibility of Hamstring Muscle according to the Frequency of Self- Myofascial Release Using a Foam Roller

2024 Journal of International Academy of Physical Ther Vol.15 No.1

Background: Self-myofascial release using a foam roller has short-term effects for improving muscle function and joint range of motion (ROM) and reducing delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) after exercise. Objectives: The purpose of our study was to examine the muscle physiological changes for each set in self-myofascial release of the hamstring muscles using a foam roller in order to provide basic data for the most effective program composition for improving muscle tension, stiffness, and flexibility of the hamstring muscles. Design: A quasi-experimental clinical trial. Methods: To confirm the effect of self-myofascial release of the hamstring muscles using a foam roller, muscle tone and stiffness of the hamstring muscles were measured. As an intervention method, the study subject performed four sessions of self-myofascial release by moving a foam roller back and forth on the posterior thigh muscle of the right leg. Results: There were statistically significant changes in the stiffness of the biceps femoris and the flexibility of the hamstring muscles. Conclusion: Self-myofascial release with foam rolling is an effective intervention method for increasing hamstring flexibility and ROM, and it is recommended as effective to perform self-myofascial release for three to four sessions to maintain normal muscle tone and stiffness of the hamstring muscles.

Vol.18 No.4

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in the flexibility and elasticity of the muscles when the hamstrings were stretched in one direction and when they were stretched in three directions. METHODS: In this study the subjects were divided into two groups, namely the ‘one-direction stretching exercise of the hamstring muscle in the neutral position’ group (female: 14 people, male: 14 people) and the ‘three-way stretching exercise’ group (female: 12 people, male: 14 people) considering the positions of the three hamstring muscles. The elasticity and flexibility of the hamstring muscles were measured before and after the self-extension exercise, and the average value of two measurements was noted. To evaluate the flexibility of the hamstring muscle, a ‘sit and reach’ test was performed, and muscle elasticity was measured using the MyotonPRO® device. RESULTS: After the stretching exercise, flexibility increased in both groups. In terms of muscle elasticity, the body dynamic strength and resonance frequency of the stretching one-direction stretching group decreased after the stretching exercise. CONCLUSION: To alter the muscle characteristics and increase the flexibility when performing a stretching exercise, selecting and stretching only one muscle with the lowest range of motion yields effective results. The ideal technique to be employed appears to be to stretch the entire hamstring muscle in one direction from the neutral position.

Effect of High-frequency Diathermy on Hamstring Tightness

Vol.28 No.1

Background: The hamstring is a muscle that crosses two joints, that is the hip and knee, and its flexibility is an important indicator of physical health in its role in many activities of daily living such as sitting, walking, and running. Limited range of motion (ROM) due to hamstring tightness is strongly related to back pain and malfunction of the hip joint. High-frequency diathermy (HFD) therapy is known to be effective in relaxing the muscle and increasing ROM. Objects: To investigate the effects of HFD on active knee extension ROM and hamstring tone and stiffness in participants with hamstring tightness. Methods: Twenty-four participants with hamstring tightness were recruited, and the operational definition of hamstring tightness in this study was active knee extension ROM of below 160° at 90° hip flexion in the supine position. HFD was applied to the hamstring for 15 minutes using the WINBACK device. All participants were examined before and after the intervention, and the results were analyzed using a paired t-test. The outcome measures included knee extension ROM, the viscoelastic property of the hamstring, and peak torque for passive knee extension. Results: The active knee extension ROM significantly increased from 138.8° ± 9.9° (mean ± standard deviation) to 143.9° ± 10.4° after the intervention (p < 0.05), while viscoelastic property of the hamstring significantly decreased (p < 0.05). Also, the peak torque for knee extension significantly decreased (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Application of HFD for 15 minutes to tight hamstrings immediately improves the active ROM and reduces the tone, stiffness, and elasticity of the muscle. However, further experiments are required to examine the long-term effects of HFD on hamstring tightness including pain reduction, postural improvement around the pelvis and lower extremities, and enhanced functional movement.

Acute Effects of Self-Myofascial Release Using Various Foam Rollers on Knee Extension Angles and Hamstring Muscle Tone in Subjects with Shortened Hamstrings: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Vol.12 No.3

This study aimed to compare the effects of hamstring self-myofascial release using three different foam rollers on the passive and active angles of knee extension and hamstring muscle tone in subjects with shortened hamstrings. Twenty subjects with shortened hamstrings were included. The passive and active knee extension angles and hamstring muscle tone were measured immediately after each self-myofascial release of the hamstring muscles using a soft-, hard-, or grid-type foam roller. A goniometer was used to measure the passive and active knee extension angles, while a Myoton PRO was used to measure the hamstring muscle tone. The passive and active knee extension angles significantly increased and the hamstring muscle tone significantly decreased after all interventions (p<.05). However, none of the dependent variables differed significantly among the three groups (p>.05). All soft-, hard-, and grid-type foam rollers effectively improved hamstring flexibility and muscle tone in subjects with shortened hamstrings. Our findings suggest that individuals should choose the foam roller that is comfortable for them.

Vol.8 No.2

This study aimed to identify alterations in the thickness of the hamstring and the muscle tone in response to soft tissue mobilization (STM), passive stretching (PS), and muscle energy technique (MET). Forty-five male subjects with no orthopedic or neurological diseases volunteered to participate in the study, which were allocated either the SEM, PS, or MET groups, 10 in each. Outcome measure included the thickness and muscle tone of the hamstring. Intervention was an isometric contraction and 10-sec stretching for the STM group, a 10 repetitions of 10-sec stretch for the PS group, and an isometric contraction and relaxation for the MET group. Pre- and post-treatment changes in the thickness and muscle tone of hamstring were significantly different for the three groups (p<.05). However, there were not found statistically significant differences in the thickness and muscle tone of hamstring between the groups (p>.05). This study suggests that all tree methods may be helpful to increase the condition of hamstring. Further studies with robust design will be needed for the generality of our results.
