Vol.35 No.3

The purpose of this study is to investigate the difference of muscle activity according to application of a foam roller during pilates. The 8 male subjects were selected and quadruped position, bridge, and core control movement of pilates were randomly assigned to 9 movements on a static mat motion, static foam-roller motion, and dynamic foam-roller actions. This program was conducted once at intervals of 1 week. The muscle activity of erector spinae, rectus abdominis, external oblique, gluteus medius, rectus femoris, and biceps femoris were measured and the collected data was analyzed by one-way ANOVA. First, in the quadruped, the rectus abdominis and external oblique, rectus femoris of the dynamic foam-roller actions showed higher muscle activity than the static mat motion and the static foam-roller motion(p <.001), gluteus medius muscle activity was also significantly higher (p <.05). biceps femoris were significantly higher in static foam-roller motions than in static mat-motion and dynamic foam-roller actions(p <.05). Second, biceps femoris muscle activity was highest in dynamic foam-roller actions than static mat-motion and static foam-roller motions during bridge(p <.001). Third, in the sitting core control, the rectus abdominis and gluteus medius of the dynamic foam-roller actions showed higher muscle activity than the static mat motion and the static foam-roller motion(p <.001). and activity of erector spinae muscle was also significantly higher (p <.01). external oblique were significantly higher in static mat-motion than in static foam-roller motions and dynamic foam-roller actions(p <.05). Considering the muscle activity during pilates exercise, it would be more effective to apply the method and difficulty.

Effects of Shoulder Abduction in Opposite Directions on EMG Activity in the Abdominal Muscles during Single Leg Raising in the Supine Position on the Foam Roller in Healthy Subjects

Vol.27 No.4

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the electromyographic (EMG) activity of the abdominal muscles and to compare the activity ratios of the bilateral rectus abdominis (RA) to oblique abdominal muscles during shoulder abduction in opposite directions with single leg raising (SLR) performed in the supine position on a foam roller. Methods: Fifteen healthy subjects were recruited to the study. Each subject lay on the foam roller and performed left single leg raising with right or left shoulder 90° abduction (Abd); performed in a random order. Surface EMG recordings of selected abdominal muscles (i.e., the RA, external oblique abdominis [EO], internal oblique abdominis [IO], and transverse abdominis [TrA]) were normalized to maximum voluntary isometric contraction. EO/RA and IO and TrA/RA ratios were determined with surface EMG. Data were analyzed by Independent t-test. The statistical significance level was p<0.05. Results: The results were as follows: (1) the right RA, left EO, and right IO and TrA muscle activities increased significantly at the left SLR with left Abd compared to the left SLR with right Abd (p<0.05); and (2) the ratio of right EO/RA activity increased significantly at the left SLR with right Abd compared to left Abd (p<0.05). Conclusion: These findings suggest that left SLR with left Abd on a foam roller is an appropriate exercise for activation of specific oblique abdominal muscles.

Effect of Shoulder Abduction Angles on EMG Activity of the Abdominal Muscles during Single Leg Holding on the Foam Roller

Vol.32 No.4

Purpose: This study examined the electromyography (EMG) activity of the abdominal muscles and the ratio of the oblique abdominal muscle activity to the rectus abdominis muscle during a single-leg holding position with isometric shoulder abduction (SLHISA) in the supine position on a foam roller. Methods: Nineteen healthy males were recruited to the study. Each subject was asked to lay on a round foam roller and perform single-leg (nondominant) holding with contralateral shoulder abduction to one of three angles (45°, 90°, or 135°) in random order. The surface EMG signals of the bilateral rectus abdominis (RA), external oblique abdominis (EO), and combined internal oblique abdominis (IO) and transverse abdominis (TrA) muscle were collected during the tasks. The EO/RA and (IO & TrA)/RA ratios were determined using surface EMG. One way repeated measure ANOVA with three SLHISAs was used to assess the significant abdominal muscle EMG activity and the ratio of the oblique abdominal muscles activity to the RA muscle. The statistical significance level was p<0.05. Results: The results were as follows. The SLHISA 135° showed significantly higher EMG activity of both RAs, left EO, and right IO & TrA muscles (p<0.05). The right EO and left IO and TrA muscles/RA were significantly different among the SLHISA angles. The SLHISA 45° showed a significantly greater ratio of right EO/RA and left IO & TrA/RA (p<0.05). Conclusion: SLHISA on a foam roller is useful for lumbopelvic stabilization exercise by increasing the activity and recruiting a specific pattern of the oblique abdominal muscle.

Acute Effects of Self-Myofascial Release Using Various Foam Rollers on Knee Extension Angles and Hamstring Muscle Tone in Subjects with Shortened Hamstrings: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Vol.12 No.3

This study aimed to compare the effects of hamstring self-myofascial release using three different foam rollers on the passive and active angles of knee extension and hamstring muscle tone in subjects with shortened hamstrings. Twenty subjects with shortened hamstrings were included. The passive and active knee extension angles and hamstring muscle tone were measured immediately after each self-myofascial release of the hamstring muscles using a soft-, hard-, or grid-type foam roller. A goniometer was used to measure the passive and active knee extension angles, while a Myoton PRO was used to measure the hamstring muscle tone. The passive and active knee extension angles significantly increased and the hamstring muscle tone significantly decreased after all interventions (p<.05). However, none of the dependent variables differed significantly among the three groups (p>.05). All soft-, hard-, and grid-type foam rollers effectively improved hamstring flexibility and muscle tone in subjects with shortened hamstrings. Our findings suggest that individuals should choose the foam roller that is comfortable for them.

Acute Effects of Foam Rolling Exercises on Arterial Stiffness, Flexibility and Autonomic Nervous System Function in Young and Middle-Aged Women

Vol.30 No.4

PURPOSE: Arterial stiffness is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease and inversely associated with flexibility. Self-myofascial release (SMR) using a foam roller is a popular intervention to improve flexibility, restore the muscles, fascia, tendons, and ligaments, and regain soft-tissue extensibility. This study aimed to investigate whether a single bout of SMR has a beneficial effect on arterial stiffness and the function of the autonomic nervous system and the relationships among these variables in young and middle-aged women by age. METHODS: Ten healthy young (23.20±0.59 years) and 10 middle-aged women (44.50±0.91 years) completed an instructed SMR using a foam roller. Brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV), augmentation index (AIx), trunk flexibility, shoulder flexibility, heart rate variability, including standard deviation of normal R-R intervals (SDNN), and the root mean square of the standard deviation of the time between heartbeats (RMSSD) were measured before and after one 30-minutes bout of SMR. RESULTS: After one bout of SMR, trunk and shoulder flexibility increased in both groups of women, while AIx decreased significantly (from 6.9±2.9 to -1.9±4.6%, p=.0072, young women group; from 22.1±3.4 to 14.7±1.7%, p=.0049, middle-aged women group). However, the baPWV, RMSSD, and SDNN did not change. In the analysis of correlations between all measured variables, changes in AIx showed negative correlations with flexibility and SDNN. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that one bout of SMR using a foam roller positively affected arterial stiffness in women by reducing AIx and improving flexibility.

Effects of Using a Foam Rollers for a Correction Exercise Program on Muscle Activity and Alignment

Vol.11 No.2

Objective: This study aims to determine whether the correction exercise program using props is effective for cervical and thoracic alignment and muscle activity of the cervical flexors and extensors of office workers. Method: The subjects of this study were 22 male and female adults who were working in the K-Hospital in Seoul. The self-myofascial release and muscle strengthening exercise was conducted twice daily, five times a week, for 30 min. each, for four weeks using a foam roller. Results: The changes in the heights of subjects’ heads, shoulders, and pelvises showed that all alignments were closer to the center line, all of which exhibited significant differences(p<.05). The muscle activities of cervical flexor(sternocleidomastoid muscle) and extensor(splenius capitis) were also increased, which also showed significant difference(p<.05). Conclusion: In light of the health benefits and the prevention of chronic conditions of office workers who require improved posture habits, the correction exercise using props should be positively considered for proper posture maintenance; further future studies are still needed.

Immediate Effects of Vibrating Foam Roller on Ankle Range of Motion and Gait Speed in Patients with Stroke

2024 Journal of International Academy of Physical Ther Vol.15 No.1

Background: Among the various rehabilitation methods for stroke patients, one method involves the use of vibration. Recently, vibration foam rollers, combining vibration with foam rolling, have been developed and are widely used. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of vibration foam rolling on ankle range of motion (ROM), and gait speed in patients with stroke. Design: A randomized controlled trial. Methods: Thirty stroke patients volunteered to participate and were randomly assigned to the vibrating foam roller group (n=15) and the non-vibrating foam roller group (n=15). Active dorsiflexion ROM, and 10-meter walk (10MW) were used to evaluate ankle ROM, and gait speed before and after each exercise. The two groups performed a 30-minute foam roller exercise program. The non-vibrating foam roller group performed the same exercise program as the vibrating foam roller group, but without vibration. Results: The within-group change in active dorsiflexion ROM after the exercise was significant for both the vibrating foam roller group and the non-vibrating foam roller group (P<.05). The within-group change in 10MW after the exercise was significant for the vibrating foam roller group (P<.05), while it was not significant for the non-vibrating foam roller group (P>.05). Additionally, there was no significant difference in active dorsiflexion ROM and 10MW between the vibrating foam roller group and the non-vibrating foam roller group (P>.05). Conclusion: This study confirmed that a vibrating foam roller exercise program immediately improves ankle ROM and gait speed in stroke patients.
