본 연구는 미국의 신입생 대상 교육(first-year experience: FYE)의 필요성을 알리고, 한국 대학 교육과정에 도입되어 효과적으로 정착ㆍ실행될 수 있도록 시사점을 제시하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 연구는 크게 다음의 세 단계로 진행되었다. 첫째, 문헌 고찰을 통해 신입생 대상 교육의 발상지인 미국의 신입생 대상 교육의 역사와 배경 그리고 기본 방향에 대해 고찰하였다. 둘째, 신입생 대상 교육의 모범적 사례로 평가되는 5개 미국 대학의 실행 사례를 교육내용, 운영방식, 교육적 효과 차원에서 분석하였다. 셋째, 미국 대학의 신입생 대상 교육 관계자들의 인터뷰 내용을 바탕으로 신입생 대상 교육의 도입과 실행에 관한 아이디어를 수집하고, 이에 기반하여 향후 한국에 신입생 대상 교육을 성공적으로 도입ㆍ실행하기 위해 요청되는 과제들에 대해 탐색하였다. 연구 결과, 제언으로 신입생 지원을 목적으로 한 대학 교육과정 운영에 대한 정부의 지원, 신입생 대상 교육의 준비-실행-보고를 위한 공적 채널 구축과 이를 관리하는 전문 기관 마련, 고등학교와 대학 교육과정 간의 연계성에 대한 고찰 및 이를 위한 노력, 그리고 대학 자율성을 보장하는 교육정책의 마련을 제시하였다. The purpose of this study is to emphasize the need of U. S. first-year experience (FYE) and present its suggestions so that it could be introduced to Korean college curriculum and settled and implemented effectively. For this purpose, the following three stages are adopted: First, literature review is made in terms of history, background, and directions of U.S. FYE. Second, cases of five U. S. colleges considered to be exemplary ones of FYE are analyzed in terms of contents, implementation, and educational effectiveness. Third, those responsible for FYE in the five colleges are interviewed to collect their ideas about FYE and, on this basis, examine tasks required to adopt FYE to Korea and implement it successfully in the future. The results indicate that it is necessary to give governmental support to college curriculum for the purpose of assisting first-year students, build a formal channel for planning, implementation, and evaluation of FYE, establish a specialized organization for managing the tasks, make considerations and efforts for curriculum articulation between school and college, and make an educational policy for guaranteeing autonomy of colleges.

대학 신입생의 영어학습 경험과 대학영어 읽기 수업 분석: C대학교 < 대학영어 > 사례연구

The purpose of this study is to investigate which educational factors caused students… motivation to be reduced while learning English before they entered the collage and to find out how the freshman English course works as the process of motivational changes in English learning. In order to find the demotivating factors in English learning, 138 freshmen participated in the survey asking how they felt demotivated in the given contexts of English learning before starting their college education. After completing the English course, which was designed to help students regain motivation to learn English as a First-Year Experience (FYE) course, 13 successful students were asked to answer the open-ended questions to reflect on their English learning. The survey results show that during their high school days, simple memorization of vocabularies without guidance, translation-centered English reading, individual learning contexts without getting help in the learning, and grammar-centered English learning demotivated students… English learning. On the other hand, students who successfully completed the English reading course responded to the course positively. Based on the study results, the educational implications were provided.
