        A Hybrid Approach to Floating Quantifiers: Some Experimental Evidence

The details may differ, but the formal analyses of floating quantifiers can be divided into three schools of research. One is an adnominal approach, which argues that the noun and the quantifier are externally-merged together (at some point of the derivation), and that the noun has undergone lefiward movement in a later derivation (e.g. Kuroda 1983, Sportiche 1988, Ueda 1990, Boskovic 2004). Another is an adverbial approach, which claims that the quantifier modifies the event structure of the verb phrase, and that the noun and the quantifier are not related to each other by movement (e g Kayne 1975, Fukushima 1991, Bobaljik 1995, 2003, Brisson l998, Nakanish 2003, Kim and Yang 2006, Kim 2011). The other is a hybrid approach (e.g. Ishii 1998, Kang 2002, Ko 2005, 2007, Fitzpatrick 2006) which argues that some floating quantifiers are adnominals while some are adverbials. This paper evaluates the predictions and validity of the three approaches with new experimental data, and provides some evidence for the overall hybrid approach from on-line processing and off-line judgment data. At the conclusion of the paper, we also discuss remaining issues to solidify the hypotheses of the hybrid approach.

        Edge-Preserving Denoising Method Using Variation Approach and Image Gradient Distribution

        This paper proposed an image denoising technique that can enhance the quality of image by using a variational approach and image gradient distribution. First, in order to remove the noise, we consider the variational approach for the energy functional that satisfies an edge-preserving regularization property. Here, we propose a new variational functional that can be implemented by adding a new gradient distribution term in a given energy functional that locally controls the extent of denoising over image regions according to their gradient magnitudes. And by using the fundamental lemma for the calculus of variations, we derive the Euler-Lagrange equation for true image that can achieve the minimum of a devised functional. Next, we considered the procedure that this equation can be solved by using a gradient decent method, which is one of the dynamic approximation techniques. Through various experiments, we can demonstrate that the proposed method can preserve the edges while removing noise better than existing techniques.

        In this paper, a precision landing approach is implemented based on real-time image processing. A full-scale landmark for automatic landing is used. canny edge detection method is applied to identify the outside quadrilateral while circular hough transform is used for the recognition of inside circle. Position information on the ground landmark is uplinked to the unmanned helicopter via ground control computer in real time so that the unmanned helicopter control the air vehicle for accurate landing approach. Ground test and a couple of flight tests for autonomous landing approach show that the image processing and automatic landing operation system have good performance for the landing approach phase at the altitude of 20m~1m above ground level.

        The diabetes is a disease that can become a serious disorder for a lifetime. It kills more than a million people every year. This disease can afect anyone. Diabetes occurs when the body is unable to process all the sugar (glucose) in the bloodstream; its complications can move to heart issues, caress, vision loss, and kidney stoppage and leg amputation problems. Many people with diabetes inject their body daily and feel that their work is done. Diabetes is an incurable disease because of poor health. The diabetes be able to be divided keen on2 types. The type-1 diabetes is hereditary. It is not easy to cure. People with type 2 diabetes can greatly reduce their risk of developing diabetes by following a proper, proper lifestyle. In addition it helps reduce the risk of diabetes. The proposed model of managing diabetics explains this disease as a specifc lifestyle. The existence of an efective system for the treatment of diabetes, according to the tasks currently set out, provides for the achievement of goals. The proposed edge based machine learning approach was achieved 85% of results compared with the Blood glucose level prediction, Adaptive multivariable closed-loop control, neural model of blood glucose level and Detecting Undiagnosed Diabetes.

        Simplified approach for the evaluation of critical stresses in concrete pavement

        Concrete pavements are subjected to traffic and environmental loadings. Repetitive type of such loading cause fatigue distress which leads to failure by forming cracks in pavement. Fatigue life of concrete pavement is calculated from the stress ratio (i.e. the ratio of applied flexural stress to the flexural strength of concrete). For the correct estimation of fatigue life, it is necessary to determine the maximum flexural tensile stress developed for practical loading conditions. Portland cement association PCA (1984) and Indian road congress IRC 58 (2015) has given charts and tables to determine maximum edge stresses for particular loading and subgrade conditions. It is difficult to determine maximum stresses for intermediate loading and subgrade conditions. The main purpose of this study is to simplify the analysis of rigid pavement without compromising the accuracy. Equations proposed for determination of maximum flexural tensile stress of pavement are verified by finite element analysis.

      • ON THE TREATMENT OF DUCTILE FRACTURE BY THE LOCAL APPROACH CONCEPT IN CONTINUUM DAMAGE MECHANICS : THEORY AND EXAMPLE

        In this paper, a finite element analysis based on the local approach concept to fracture in the continuum damage mechanics is performed to analyze ductile fracture in two dimensional quasi-static state. First an isotropic damage model based on the generalized concept of effective stress is proposed for structural materials in the context of large deformation. In this model, the stiffness degradation is taken as a measure of damage and so, the fracture phenomenon can be explained as the critical deterioration of stiffness at a material point. The modified Riks' continuation technique is used to solve incremental iterative equations. Crack propagation is achieved by removing critically damaged elements. The mesh size sensitivity analysis and the simulation of the well known shearing mode failure in plane strain state are carried out to verify the present formulation. As numerical examples, an edge cracked plate and the specimen with a circular hole under plane stress are taken. Load-displacement curves and successively fractured shapes are shown. From the results, it can be concluded that the proposed model based on the local approach concept in the continuum damage mechanics may be stated as a reasonable tool to explain ductile fracture initiation and crack propagation.

        In Oriental medicine, the status of a tongue is the important indicator to diagnose one's health like physiological and clinicopathological changes of inner parts of the body. The method of tongue diagnosis is not only convenient but also non-invasive and widely used in Oriental medicine. However, tongue diagnosis is affected by examination circumstances a lot like a light source, patient's posture and doctor's condition. To develop an automatic tongue diagnosis system for an objective and standardized diagnosis, segmenting a tongue is inevitable but difficult since the colors of a tongue, lips and skin in a mouth are similar. The proposed method includes preprocessing, graph-based over-segmentation, detecting positions with a local minimum over shading, detecting edge with color difference and estimating edge geometry from the probable structure of a tongue, where preprocessing performs down-sampling to reduce computation time, histogram equalization and edge enhancement. A tongue was segmented from a face image with a tongue from a digital tongue diagnosis system by the proposed method. According to three oriental medical doctors' evaluation, it produced the segmented region to include effective information and exclude a non-tongue region. It can be used to make an objective and standardized diagnosis.

This paper provides syntactic structures for the accounts of canonical comparatives and comparative inversions. I argue against the syntactic repair accounts by Merchant(2003) and for information structural approaches based on Selkirk(2005), Gergel et al.(2007), and Culicover & Winkler(2008). Adapting a feature-driven approach by Gergel et al., I propose that category FP is required for contrastively focused constituents and that feature [+f] should be assigned to the head of F and I. The category of FP and the feature [+f] show the interactions of syntax with phonology and syntax with semantics. The XP moved to SpecFP is pronounced with high pitch accent in the phonological component and it is interpreted as a contrastive focus in LF. (Korea National Open University)
