We set a sediment trap at the Donghwa-Ri dock in the southern coast of Korea for 12 days, from 8th to 20th August 2005, observed phytoplankton community, and was to reveal a life cycle of toxic dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoides. Phytoplankton in the trap samples appeared total of 37 genera (67 species) and the dominant species was a diatom, Skeletonema costatum. C polykrikoides were distributed very low concentrations (4~8 cells/㎖) in the trap although red tides occur in the southern coastal waters of Korea during this experiment. Futhermore, the cells supposed as C polykrikoides cysts were not detected. C polykrikoides was established in culture using micropipette and maintained at 20℃ under a 12:12 light-dark cycle of cool white fluorescent light at 6000 Lux. The cells were active and had clear red bodies at first. After two days the cells were destroyed, appearing hyaline membranes obviously.

The present study was conducted in three fields at Namhae to examine the removal efficiency of organic free, heavy metal immobilized sediment on Cochlodinium polykrikoidesand on sea water quality. The present study results concluded that removal efficiency was depends on the initial number of red tide cells. There was no drastic change in the sea water quality after sediment spray. For the comparison of effectiveness of betonite, zeolite and lime were mixed with sediment did not show any marked difference in removal. Finally, the present study evaluated 5Og/m² sediment is Sufficient to remove 100% cells density, even though various environmental factors are interfering the mechanism.
