Implementing a Sustainable Decision-Making Environment - Cases for GIS, BIM, and Big Data Utilization -

2016 KIBIM Magazine Vol.6 No.3

Planning occurs from day-to-day, small-scale decisions to large-scale infrastructure investment decisions. For that reason, various attempts have been made to appropriately assist decision-making process and its optimization. Lately, initiation of a large amount of data, also known as big data has received great attention from diverse disciplines because of versatility and adoptability in its use and possibility to generate new information. Accordingly, implementation of big data and other information management systems, such as geographic information systems (GIS) and building information modeling (BIM) have received enough attention to establish each of its own profession and other associated activities. In this extent, this study illustrates a series of big data implementation cases that can provide a lesson to urban planning domain. In specific, case studies analyze how data was used to extract the most optimized solution and what aspects could be helpful in relation to planning decisions. Also, important notions about GIS and its application in various urban cases are examined.

Vol.19 No.3

The paper illustrates recent trends of deforestation in South Korea, and only the deforestation caused by industrial complex development is considered. Multiple spatial layers are constructed and analyzed through geographic information systems (GIS), where they include spatial boundary of industrial complexes, forest- and land-cover maps, digital elevation model, and so on. The result shows that 18,684ha of forest has been lost since 2001 and is planned to be lost. The year of 2009 shows the largest forest loss; this is related to the Special Act that streamlines environmental impact assessment procedures of industrial complexes since 2008. Gyeong-buk Province has lost the largest amount of forest followed by Gyeong-nam Province. In Gyeong-buk Province, more complexes are located in mountainous regions than agricultural lands by twofold, hence resulting in more deforestation than other provinces, while in Gyeong- nam Province its massive deforestation is mainly due to hosting a large number of industrial complexes. The industrial complexes tend to consume steeper slopes as time goes by. In sum, the research outcome provides key information for developing environmental-friendly industrial complexes of the South Korea.

Vol.25 No.4

Since trees in the city are green assets that create a healthy environment for the city, systematic management of trees improves urban ecosystem services. The sporadic urban tree information centered on the site is vast, and it is difficult to manage the data, so efforts to increase efficiency are needed. This paper summarizes tree data inventory based on data constructed by Seoul Green Trust activists and constructs and discloses online database maps using Tableau Software. In order to verify the utilization of the map, we divided into consumer and supplier aspects to collect various opinions and reflect feedback to implement tree database maps for each area and species of Seoul Forest. As a result, the utilization value of tree database in urban parks was presented. The technical significance of this study is to systematically record the process of constructing and implementing a dashboard directly using the Mapbox platform and Tableau Software in the field of landscaping for the first time in Korea. In addition, the implications and supplements of landscape information were derived by collecting user opinions on the results. This can be used as an exploratory basis in the process of developing online-based services such as web and apps by utilizing landscaping tree information in the future. Although the visualization database currently constructed has limitations that ordinary users cannot interact in both directions because it utilizes business intelligence tools in terms of service provision it has affirmed both the database construction and its usability in web public format. In the future it is essential to investigate the assets of the trees in the city park and to build a database as a public asset of the city. The survey participants positively recognized that information is intuitively presented based on the map and responded that it is necessary to provide information on the overall urban assets such as small parks and roadside trees by using open source maps in the future.
