Vol.38 No.1

This study aims to investigate the dynamics among key players in promoting resident self-governance councils, with a focus on resident self-governance councils at the town, township, and dong (neighborhood) levels. The objective is to assess the current state of interactions between these councils and empirically analyze the factors influencing their performance. Additionally, the study seeks to test whether social capital plays a mediating role in the relationship between key actors in residents' self-governance associations and the performance of residents' autonomy. Drawing on the theoretical framework of the Triple Helix Model, the Sejong City Residents' Association serves as a case study, employing structural equations for analysis. The findings indicate that (1) the relationship between residents' self-governing associations and town/village administration (helix1) and (2) the relationship between residents' autonomous associations and the council (helix2) positively impact the performance of resident self-governance councils. Moreover, the study reveals that social capital, efficacy, and resident participation partially mediate the relationship between helix1, helix2, and resident autonomy performance. This suggests that collaborative interactions among stakeholders in neighborhood associations enhance social capital, potentially revitalizing these associations. In the end, he suggested the importance of mutually cooperative interaction between residents' autonomy, Eupmyeon-dong administrations, community groups, and local councils.

      • Implementation and application of helix–helix distance and crossing angle restraint potentials

Lee, Jinhyuk,Im, Wonpil Wiley Subscription Services, Inc., A Wiley Company 2007 Journal of computational chemistry Vol. No.

<P>Based on the definition of helix–helix distance and crossing angle introduced by Chothia et al. (J Mol Biol 1981, 145, 215), we have developed the restraint potentials by which the distance and crossing angle of two selected helices can be maintained around target values during molecular dynamics simulations. A series of assessments show that calculated restraint forces are numerically accurate. Since the restraint forces are only exerted on atoms which define the helical principal axes, each helix can rotate along its helical axis, depending on the helix–helix intermolecular interactions. Such a restraint potential enables us to characterize the helix–helix interactions at atomic details by sampling their conformational space around specific distance and crossing angle with (restraint) force-dependent fluctuations. Its efficacy is illustrated by calculating the potential of mean force as a function of helix–helix distance between two transmembrane helical peptides in an implicit membrane model.

201 Vol.26 No.3

The regional innovation system is an important topic that has been discussed in the sociology of science and technology and the sociology of university for over 30 years. The most important actors in the regional innovation system are universities, corporations, and governments. The method of integrating these three actors to explain the regional innovation system is called the Triple Helix or industryacademia- government linkage. This paper emphasizes that the success of the regional innovation system lies in the thick triple helix as opposed to the thin triple helix. In particular, this paper explains the ‘dynamic turn’ of the triple helix, focusing on representative research universities and regional innovation systems in the United States, which are evaluated as models of regional innovation systems, and the formation of a thick triple helix is the key to the success of regional innovation systems. Therefore, this paper adopts historical case studies as its central approach. In conclusion, this paper emphasizes that a successful regional innovation system depends on the formation of a ‘thick triple helix’ by the cumulative and creative interaction of research universities, corporations, and government.

      • Coordinative Helix-Helix Association of Heteroleptic Metallosupramolecular Helicates

Vol.2019 No.1

We report the fabrication of a unique racemic macrocycle via the association of metallosupramolecular helicates. A nickel ({Ni4}) cluster-based supramolecular helicate, [Ni8(PDA)6(CDBA)3(DMF)2(H2O)4] (1) (PDA = 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylate, CDBA = 4,4’-carbonyldibenzoate, DMF = dimethylformamide) is successfully synthesized and fully characterized. Dimerization of the right (P-) and left (M-) handed helicates of 1 via the coordination of metalloligands, [Ni(PDA2)]2- affords {[Ni8(PDA)6(CDBA)3(DMF)4-Ni(PDA)2]2} (2), which can be the representative model of the coordinative helix-helix association of heteroleptic helicates. The solid-state structures of 1 and 2 show excellent and selective CO2 uptake properties.

Vol.16 No.1

Eleven accessions of Hedera helix, three accessions of Hedera rhombea, one accession of Fatshedera lizei, and one accession of Fatsia japonica were collected and their genetic diversity was measured by using 10 RAPD primers. Approximately ninety seven percentage of polymorphism was detected, because broad germplasm, three genus, was used. Total 97 bands were scored and a dendrogram was constructed by using an UPGMA method. Accessions belonging to Hedera helix tightly clustered in one group; eight accessions showed extremely narrow genetic differences and the other three accessions also showed significant similarity. Despite of their genetic similarity, they showed morphological variations. The morphological variation with a narrow genetic differences indicated that the ivy cultivars have been indeed developed from a mutation breeding program. Genetically most unrelated Fatsia japonica showed a genetic distance of 0.63 on the average between other species. An accession from Fatshedera lizei developed by crossing between two genus, Hedera helix and Fatsia japonica, was allocated together with accessions from Hedera rhombea.

Analysis of Basic Helix-Loop-Helix Gene Related to Virus Resistance in Squash

        ( Hyun-min Lee ),( Dae-kook Kim ),( Sang-ki Suh ),( Young-doo Park ) 한국육종학회 2020 Plant Breeding and Biotechnology Vol.8 No.2

Viral diseases in squash are damaging during the early stages of development and cause loss of crop yield and economic value. To reduce the damage caused by viral diseases, resistant cultivars should be bred. The objective of this study was to determine whether there was a relationship between virus resistance and a basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) gene in squash (Cucurbita pepo L.). To do this, the bHLH transcription factor, known to be related to virus resistance, was isolated and analyzed using C. pepo individuals that were resistant or susceptible to zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV) and watermelon mosaic virus (WMV). The results showed that a three bp (GAC) deletion in the nucleotide sequences were found in the regulatory region of the CpbHLH gene in susceptible lines. It was confirmed that the deletion region was located near the binding site of the MYB transcription factor associated with the bHLH gene. It could be hypothesized that the susceptibility of susceptible lines may have been due to the lack of important sequences near the transcription factor binding region due to the deletion in the regulatory region, thus suppressing the expression of the gene. Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) revealed that the expression level of the bHLH gene in resistant lines was 2.17 times higher than in susceptible lines.

Synthesis of Chiral Bisacylphosphine Oxides and Their Application as Initiators in Helix-Sense-Selective Photopolymerization

        Jia-An Zhang,Nian-Fa Yang,Li-Wen Yang,Shi Wu,Ye-Hui Chen,Jin Zhang 2013 Macromolecular Research Vol.21 No.6

Three new chiral bisacylphosphine oxides, (-)-bis(menthylformyl)phenylphosphine oxide (1a), (+)-bis(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)menthylphosphine oxide (2a), and (-)-bis(menthylformyl)menthylphosphine oxide (3a),were synthesized using menthol as a chiral source. The synthesized new chiral bisacylphosphine oxides were used as photoinitiators for the polymerization of 1-phenyldibenzosuberyl methacrylate (PDBSMA). The polymerization initiated by chiral bisacylphosphine oxides under UV light irradiation is helix-sense-selective. Among the three prepared chiral bisacylphosphine oxides, the helix-sense-selectivity of bis(menthylformyl)menthylphosphine oxide is highest. The highest specific rotation of poly(1-phenyldibenzosuberyl methacrylate) at 365 nm is +416. The feed molar ratio of monomer to chiral bisacylphosphine oxide and the polymerization temperature have an influence on the helix-sense-selectivity. The lower the feed molar ratio of monomer to chiral bisacylphosphine oxide, the better the helix-sense-selectivity is. The increase of polymerization temperature is propitious to increase the helix-senseselectivity of the photopolymerization.

      • The effect of the triple helix system and habitat on regional entrepreneurship: Empirical evidence from the U.S.

        Kim, Y.,Kim, W.,Yang, T. Elsevier Science Publishers B.V. (North-Holland) 2012 RESEARCH POLICY Vol.41 No.1

The 'triple helix' of the university-industry-government relationship and habitat are accepted as important determinants of innovation and entrepreneurship. However, empirical explorations of the effects of these variables and their interrelationships on regional entrepreneurial activities are highly limited. To fill this gap, we investigate the effect of the triple helix system and habitat on birth and death rates of U.S. firms at the state level. As expected, we find that industrial R&D expenditure plays an important role in promoting regional firm birth. However, university and government R&D also generate a synergistic effect that indirectly influences regional firm birth rates. In addition, we find that the synergy between university and industrial R&D enhances the sustainability of firms, while the interactions between (1) university and government R&D and (2) government and industrial R&D are associated with an increase in firm death. Other factors linked to more favorable conditions for firm formation include higher educational attainment in a region, lower tax rate, and habitat factors affecting quality of life, such as lower housing prices and higher rates of health insurance coverage. In regions with high entrepreneurial activity, we find positive synergistic effects of the interactions between (1) university and government R&D and (2) university and industrial R&D on firm birth rate, suggesting that university R&D plays an important role as an 'entrepreneurial mediator' among the three spheres in the triple helix system. In low entrepreneurial regions, the only triple helix system factors significantly influencing firm birth rate were tax rate. This finding suggests that the independent and interdependent components of the triple helix system and habitat are less powerful in low entrepreneurial regions.

ERROR ANALYSIS FOR APPROXIMATION OF HELIX BY BI-CONIC AND BI-QUADRATIC BEZIER CURVES

Ahn, Young-Joon,Kim, Philsu Korean Mathematical Society 2005 대한수학회논문집 Vol.20 No.4

In this paper we approximate a cylindrical helix by bi-conic and bi-quadratic Bezier curves. Each approximation method is $G^1$ end-points interpolation of the helix. We present a sharp upper bound of the Hausdorff distance between the helix and each approximation curve. We also show that the error bound has the approximation order three and monotone increases as the length of the helix increases. As an illustration we give some numerical examples.

Identification and Characterization of a Putative Basic Helix-Loop-Helix (bHLH) Transcription Factor Interacting with Calcineurin in C. elegans

2009 Molecules and cells Vol.28 No.5

Calcineurin is a Ca2+/Calmodulin activated Ser/Thr phos-phatase that is well conserved from yeast to human. It is composed of catalytic subunit A (CnA) and regulatory subunit B (CnB). C. elegans homolog of CnA and CnB has been annotated to tax-6 and cnb-1, respectively and in vivo function of both genes has been intensively studied. In C. elegans, calcineurin play roles in various signaling path-ways such as fertility, movement, body size regulation and serotonin-mediated egg laying. In order to understand additional signaling pathway(s) in which calcineurin func-tions, we screened for binding proteins of TAX-6 and found a novel binding protein, HLH-11. The HLH-11, a member of basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) proteins, is a pu-tative counterpart of human AP4 transcription factor. Pre-viously bHLH transcription factors have been implicated to regulate many developmental processes such as cell pro-liferation and differentiation, sex determination and myo-genesis. However, the in vivo function of hlh-11 is largely unknown. Here, we show that hlh-11 is expressed in phar-ynx, intestine, nerve cords, anal depressor and vuvla mus-cles where calcineurin is also expressed. Mutant analyses reveal that hlh-11 may have role(s) in regulating body size and reproduction. More interestingly, genetic epistasis suggests that hlh-11 may function to regulate serotonin-mediated egg laying at the downstream of tax-6.
