        The structure of Coleoptera community was investigated at Mt. Bongrae of the Islet Yeungdo in Busan. The Coleoptera community was consisted of 214 species belonging to 165 genera and 30 families. Damaster jankowskii (Oberthür) was the dominant species occupying 9.57% of the Coleoptera community. The next abundant species were Harmonia axyridis (Pallas), Coccinella septempunctata Linnè, Moechotypa diphysis (Pascoe) and Sophrops heydeni (Brenske). Coleoptera of all trophic levels was recorded. The ground-walking species group was most abundant at overall statistics. The result imply that Mt. Bongrae still provides various types of habitats for Coleoptera species, while many patches of flowering plants act as remaining refuges for thier related Coleoptera.

        Community structure and distribution of ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) in Baekdudaegan Mountain, Gangwon-do, Korea

        Globally, c. 0.81.2 million species of insects exist, with Coleoptera making up about 40% of this total. Pitfall traps for collecting ground beetles were installed at 11 study plots in Baekdudaegan mountain of Gangwon-do. Individual trapped species were counted and analyzed at each study area. This study has been carried out to provide basic data for analyzing forest health and investigating the competitive distribution among biological species in the forest environment through a field investigation on the species composition, diversity, and dominance rate of Coleoptera. Carabidae were collected using pitfall traps at the study area in Backdudaegan Mountain of Gangwon-do, and the individual number of collected species was counted. Collected ground beetles in the study area comprised 837 individuals, 14 genus, and 32 species. In this study, 217, 303, 144, and 209 individuals were found in Jinburyung, Mt. Odaesan, Mt. Taebaeksan, and Mt. Dutasan area, respectively. The abundance of ground beetles was relatively high at higher altitudes than at lower altitudes and similarity differently showed in accordance with altitudes. Eucarabus sternbergi, Aulonocarabus seishinensis, and Synuchus spp. and Pterostichus spp. (Harpalidae) were widely distributed in our study area. The diversity index of species was the highest at the Mt. Odaesan study area.

      • 漢江 주변의 陸上昆蟲 및 土壞動物의 分布

          The purpose of this study was to explore the figures of land insects and soil animals inhabitated in Han River. This study was conducted in the surveys done eight times (from June, 1993 to May, 1994). Seven optional areas from Lake Paldang to irrigation in Shingok were chosen for sampling. The methods used for this study were sweeping, beating, trapping and soil sampling. The results of this study were as follows; 1) Total appearances of insects by sweeping method were 8 Order, 31 Family, 57 Genera and 65 Species. The main orders were involved in LEPIDOPTERA, HEMIPTERA and COLEOPTERA. In Autumn, they decreased in number. Specific disparity among areas was not observed but there was greater diversity of species and individuals in Bam island than others. 2) HOMOPTERA inhabitated in trees along Tan stream. 3) The total appearances of insects by beating method were 5 Order, 8 Family, 13 Genera, 14 Species, the dominant species in Bam island was Eumyllocerus gratiosus specially distinctive in Summer. In Autumn, Order COLEOPTERA tended to be decreased in number. 4) 6 Order, 12 Family, 19 Genera, 21 Species were collected by trapping. The main orders were Order HYMENOPTERA. There was a little difference among regions. In Autumn, Order COLEOPTERA increased in number because fall of temperature made animals move to the forest. 5) Disparity among areas was found by soil sampling. The more diverse species of soil animal were gathered in St.1 (Paldang) where forest had well preserved. However the individuals of regional animals were poor in number by human activeties.   漢江 水系圈의 陸上昆蟲 및 土壞 동물상을 알아보기 위하여 팔당호 부터 신곡잠언 수중보 까지 7개 地域으로 나누어 1993년 6월부터 1994년 5월까지 총 8회에 걸쳐 11일간 調査하였다. 定性的인 조사를 爲하여 sweeping法을, 定量的인 調査를 爲하여 털이法, Trap 設置法, 土壞採取法 등의 方法을 사용하였다. 그 調査 結果는 다음과 같다. 1) Sweeping 方法에 의하여 調査된 昆蟲은 總 8目 31科 57屬 65種이었으며 이들 중 대만흰나비, 네발나비, 십자무늬긴노린재 등의 個體數가 比較的 많은 것으로 조사되었다. 나비目과 노린재目, 딱정벌레目 등은 가을철에 그 數가 顯著히 減少하였다. 각 調査 地域別로 큰 差異는 없었으나 밤섬이 種數나 個體數에서 比較的 多樣하였다. 2) 탄천변의 가로수 (은사시나무)는 매마類의 集團棲息地인 것으로 확인되었다. 3) 털이法에 의하여 調査된 昆蟲은 總 5目 8科 13屬 14種이었으며 이들 중 긴더듬이바구미의 個體數가 가장 많았으며 밤섬에서만 확인되었다. 역시 딱정벌레目의 개체수가 가을철에 顯著히 減少하는 傾向을 나타내었다. 4) Trap 設置法에 의한 調査에서는 總 6目 12科 19屬 21種을 동정하였는데 벌목 (개미류)의 個體數가 가장 많았으며 各 地域間의 동물상에서 약간의 差異를 확인할 수 있었다. 가을에 딱정벌레目의 個體數는 오히려 增加하였는데 이것은 氣溫의 下降에 따라 숲이나 풀밭 등지로 딱정벌레目의 動物들이 移動하였기 때문인 것으로 判斷된다. 5) 土壞 採取法에 의한 調査에서는 調査 地域別로 顯著한 差異를 나타내었는데 森林植生이 比較的 잘 保存된 1지역 (팔당)에서는 지렁이類를 包含하여 土壞動物의 種數도 比較的 多樣한 것으로 調査되었으며, 人間에 의한 干涉이 比較的 심한 나머지 지역의 動物相은 매우 貧弱한 것으로 調査되었다.

      • Experimental and Computational Investigation of Aerodynamic Characteristics of Hovering Coleoptera

        Aerodynamic characteristics of Coleoptera species of Epilachna quadricollis and Allomyrina dichotoma are experimentally and numerically investigated. Using digital high speed camera and smoke wire technique, we visualized the continuous wing kinematics and the flight motion of free-flying coleoptera. The experimental visualization shows that the elytra flapped concurrently with the main wing both in the downstroke and upstroke motions. The wing motion of Epilachna quadricollis was captured and analyzed frame by frame to identify the kinematics of the wings and to implement it in the movement of a model wing (thin plate) in the simulation. The two-dimensional simulation of Epilachna quadricollis hovering flight was performed by assuming the wing cross section shape as a thin plate, even though most of insect’s wings are made of curved corrugated membrane. The effect of Reynolds number are investigated by the simulation. Meanwhile, in order to investigate the role and effect of elytra, the flow visualization of Allomyrina dichotoma was carried on using smoke wire visualization technique. Here, we confirmed that the vortex generated by elytra due to its movement is strongly influence the vortex dynamic generated by hind wings.

        The First Study on Bacterial Flora and Biological Control Agent of Anoplus roboris (Sufr., Coleoptera)

        The hazelnut leaf holer (Anoplus roboris Sufr., Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is a devastating pest of hazelnut and oak trees. It causes approximately 20-30% economic damage to hazelnut production per year in Turkey. In the present study, in order to find a more effective and safe biological control agent against A. roboris, we investigated the bacterial flora of the hazelnut leave holer, and tested them for insecticidal effects on it. According to morphological, physiological and biochemical tests, bacterial flora were identified as Bacillus circulans (Ar1), Bacillus polymyxa (Ar2), Enterobacter sp. (Ar3) and Bacillus sphaericus (Ar4). Insecticidal effects of bacterial isolates were performed on adult A. roboris. The highest insecticidal effect determined was 67% by B. sphaericus within eight days. The insecticidal effects of the other isolates (Ar1, Ar2 and Ar3) were determined as 33%, 47% and 47% within the same period, respectively

        New Korean record and redescription of Dienerella (Dienerella) costulata (Reitter) (Coleoptera: Latridiidae: Latridiinae)

        The genus Dienerella Reitter and its described species are reported for the first time in Korea. Scanning Electronic Microscope (SEM) photographs of habitus and diagnostic characters, and line drawings of male genetalia are presented. All specimens of the species were collected from inside of a building associated with dried collections, but no evidence is available of the damage caused by the species.

        Taxonomic review of the genus Copelatus Erichson (Coleoptera : Dytiscidae) in Korea

        A taxonomic review of the genus Copelatus Erichson (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae) in Korea is presented. In the present study, five species of Copelatus are recognized from Korea, including one unrecorded species, C. kammuriensis. We provide a key to the Korean species of Copelatus, diagnosis of one unrecorded species, habitus photographs, scanning electron micrographs of the elytron, and illustrations of the aedeagus.

        Four Gyrophaena Species New to Korea (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Aleocharinae)

        New record of ladybird beetle (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) in Korea, with a checklist of the Palearctic species of Horniolus Weise

        The ladybird beetle (Coleoptera) is composed of approximately 6,000 species around the worldbelonging to about 360 genera. However, the genus of Horniolus of family Coccinellidae has not beenrecorded in Korean peninsula. Four adult specimens were collected from Daedun Mountain, South Korea. Horniolus fortunatus is distinguished from other Horniolus species by body length 2.7e2.9mm; pronotumdark with two reddish brown markings laterally; elytra black with four transverse markings; abdominalpostcoxal line complete; penis widest at base and convergent at apical part; and distinct shorter thanparameres. Habitus photographs, diagnosis, and line-drawings of male genitalia are provided with a keyto the species of genus Horniolus in Palearctic region.

        Four Homalotine Species New to Korea (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Aleocharinae)

        Four homalotine species-Anomognathus armatus (Sharp), Heterota onorum Maruyama, Neosilusa ceylonica (Kraatz), and Silusa lanuginosa Sharp-and three genera-Anomognathus Solier, Neosilusa Cameron, Silusa Erichson-are identified for the first time in Korea. The tribe Homalotini can be distinguished from other related tribes by the combination of the following characters: tarsal formula 4-4-5; mandible with patch or rows of denticles in ventral molar region; base of medial setae of prementum very close together, setal insertions in contact in many, setae displaced one behind the other in some; medial pseudopore field of prementum very narrow in many. Habitus photographs, diagnoses, and illustrations of male genitalia of these four species are provided.
