Ever since B. Williams criticized utilitarianism based on integrity, many scholars attempted to conceptualize integrity. The purpose of this paper is to defend the integrated-self view, which is one of the conceptualization theories of integrity. According to the integrated-self view, integrity is the state of being integrated in terms of the agent’s inner desires or volitions. Some scholars criticize the integrated-self view as not being able to explain the value of integrity. For example, C. Calhoun points out that it may be worthwhile to construct oneself as a dual or multifaceted being. This value question requires an explanation of why the integration of one’s desires is admirable. This paper attempts an explication of the value of integrity based on H. G. Frankfurt’s concept of ‘caring about.’ First, I reveal in what ways the two proposals presented within the integrated-self view fail to elucidate values. Then, I explain how the value of integrity can be explained in the integrated-self view that I understand. If we accept Frankfort’s concept of caring, the integration of desires is not just the harmony of desires. It can be seen that the harmony of needs asserted by the integrated-self view is centered on the objects we care about, and through this, it is possible to explain the value of integrity. 윌리엄스(B. Williams)가 인격통합성(integrity)에 근거해 공리주의를 비판한 후 많은 학자가 인격통합성의 개념화를 시도했다. 이 글의 목적은 인격통합성의 개념화 이론 중 하나인 통합적 자아 견해를 옹호하는 것이다. 통합적 자아 견해에 따르면 인격통합성이란 행위자의 내적 욕구나 의욕 측면에서 통합을 이룬 상태이다. 일부 학자들은 통합적 자아 견해가 인격통합성의 가치를 해명할 수 없다고 비판한다. 예를 들어 캘훈(C. Calhoun)은 자신을 이중적인 혹은 다면적인 존재로 구성하는 것도 가치 있을 수 있다고 지적한다. 이러한 가치 물음은 자기 욕구들의 통합이 어떤 의미에서 가치 있는지에 대한 해명을 요구한다. 이 글은 프랭크퍼트(H. G. Frankfurt)의 ‘마음 씀’ (caring about) 개념에 기대어 인격통합성의 가치를 모색한다. 필자는 먼저 통합적 자아 견해 내에서 제시된 두 제안이 어떤 측면에서 가치 해명에 실패하는지를 논증한다. 그리고 나서 필자가 이해하는 통합적 자아 견해 속에서 인격통합성이 어떤 식으로 가치를 해명할 수 있는지 설명한다. 프랭크퍼트 이론 고유의 마음 씀 개념을 받아들이면 욕구들의 통합은 욕구들의 조화에 그치지 않는다. 통합적 자아 견해에서 주장하는 욕구들의 조화는 우리가 마음 쓰는 대상들을 중심으로 이뤄진다고 볼 수 있으며, 이를 통해 인격통합성의 가치 해명이 가능하다.

공리주의에 대해 비판을 가하면서 윌리엄스(B. Williams)는 공리주의가 지구상에서 곧장 사라지게 될 것으로 단언한 바 있다. 윌리엄스의 예측은 전혀 들어맞지 않았지만, 윌리엄스가 비판의 근거로 제시한 ‘인격통합성’(integrity) 개념이 불러일으킨 반향은 그의 지적이 상당히 일리가 있었음을 보여준다. 그러나 인격통합성 개념이 무엇인지에 대해 학자들 간에는 의견을 달리한다. 이 글은 인격통합성을 정의내리고 있는 대표적 이론인 정체성 견해와 통합적 자아 견해의 유사점과 차이점을 검토한다. 이와 더불어 통합적 자아 견해에 대해 지적된 가벼움 반론은 잘못된 이해임을 논증함으로써 통합적 자아 견해의 우월성을 제안한다. Attacking utilitarianism, Bernard Williams asserts that we will hear no more of it soon. Although he could not have been more wrong on the matter, scholars paid a great attention on the concept of ‘integrity’, on which he relied for his criticism of utilitarianism. It tells us that his criticism was not entirely misguided. There is, however, a significant amount of disagreement on how to understand the concept. This paper compares and contrasts two dominant views on integrity. Whilst I deal with each argument against the views, I argue that at least one argument against the integrated-self view does not work and suggest that it is a better view than the identity view of integrity.
