조선 전기 성균관 교관의 자질 논란 사례

상식적으로 조선시대 성균관의 교관이 된다고 하는 것은 사표가 될만한 자질과 덕행 및 학문적 실력을 충분히 갖춘 자라고 할 수 있다. 여기서 성균관의 교관은 오늘날로 말하자면 대학교수다. 그런데 일반적인 예상과는 달리 성균관 교관이 된 자들의 자질이 직급의 고하를 막론하고 문제가 많아서 논란거리가 되는 일들이 많이 발생하였다. 지금도 일부 대학교수들이 온갖 비리와 추문으로 세상의 비난거리가 되고 있는 것처럼 조선시대 성균관 교관들의 경우도 매우 비슷한 상황이었다. 성균관 사예 박윤검은 성균관 계집종을 사통하여 애를 둘이나 낳은 전력과 자신의 영달을 위해 비굴한 짓거리를 했다는 평가를, 직강 전순인은 무식하다는 평가를, 사성 진복창은 간신배, 비루, 아첨꾼, 용렬하다는 평가를, 전적 신여집은 음주와 용렬하다는 평가를, 박사 한인은 공사를 구분못하고 개인적 울분을 표출했다는 평가를, 직강 조욱은 근신하지 않고 승진에만 관심을 쏟았다는 평가를, 학정 윤선과 문여는 나쁜 버릇과 나태함을 지적 받았고, 사성 김용은 주색잡기와 주변으로부터 원성을 많이 샀다는 평가를, 직강 채형은 뇌물수수로 나쁜 평가를, 사예 이홍주는 사신으로서의 책임을 망각하고 거짓 장계를 올렸다는 빈축을 샀다. 위와 같이 조선 전기 성균관 교관들 중에는 두고두고 욕먹는 일을 하여 결국에는 나쁜 평가를 받은 것이었다. 이밖에도 수많은 경우들이 있었겠지만 『조선왕조실록』에 나타난 대표적인 사례들만을 살펴본 것으로도 충분히 성균관의 사정을 짐작할 수가 있다. 그러므로 이런 역사적인 일들을 필히 반면교사로 삼아 지금의 대학교수들은 처신을 올바로 해야 할 것이라고 생각된다.
