김유신의 생애와 역사적 의의 − 그 가계(家系)와 활동을 중심으로 −

김유신은 전통적으로 名臣이자 궁극적으로 신라의 통일을 이룩한 名將으로 이해되었다. 하지만 국권침탈시기 민족주의적 시각에서 그의 업적은 폄하되어 민족의 자주성을 해친 대표적 인물로 평가되었다. 또한 최근 신라의 ‘삼국통일론’에 대한 비판적 입장에서 그의 업적은 폄하되어 당파적 이익에 매몰된 인물로 그려지기도 한다. 그러나 김유신과 그의 선대는 망국의 왕족으로서 신라 귀족사회에서 살아남기 위한 노력을 끊임없이 전개했을 뿐이었다. 그 결과 무훈을 통해 그 일족은 신라의 삼국통합에 기여하고, 신라 중대왕실의 개창에 일조할 수 있었다. 이 과정에서 김유신 가문은 때로는 비열하다고 할 수 있는 모략을 구사하기도 했다. 김유신의 부 김서현은 신분의 한계를 극복하기 위한 수단으로 왕실 여인 萬明夫人과 야합했고, 김유신은 그의 누이를 김춘추 가문과 혼인관계를 맺기 위해 모략을 꾸미기도 했다. 김유신의 선대와 그 자신이 살았던 7세기는 삼국간의 항쟁이 치열하게 전개되었던 시기이며, 특히 신라는 고구려와 백제의 지속적인 공격으로 수세에 몰려 있었다. 대야성의 함락은 신라의 새로운 귀족세력으로 등장하고 있던 진지왕계와 김유신 가문에 직접적 위기를 초래했다. 이 위기를 극복하기 위해 김유신은 김춘추를 도와 근원적으로 위기를 해소하기 위해 백제 정벌을 추진했다. 그 결과는 이른바 ‘삼국통일’이었다. 김유신과 그 가문은 무력이 약하여 신라에 투항할 수 밖에 없었다. 그들은 무력을 기반으로 신라 귀족사회의 일원으로 자리를 잡았다. 대야성의 함락으로 신라는 위기의 근원을 제거할 수 있는 무력이 필요했고, 김유신과 그 가문은 이를 제공했다. 이로써 김유신과 그 가문은 삼국통합이라는 역사적인 경로에 생존을 위해 갖추었던 무력을 갖고 참여할 수 있었다. 신라의 삼국통합은 한국사의 실질적인 출발점이다. 김유신과 그 가문의 행적이 갖는 역사적 의의는 바로 여기에서 찾을 수 있을 것이다. Traditionally Kim Yoosin is valued as a greatstatesman and a great commander who ultimately achieved unification of Three Kingdoms. But he was and valued as a typical figure ruind autonomy of Korean autonomy from nationalistic point of view since the Japanese compulsory occupation of Korea. And in taking critical stance on the idea of the unification of Three Kingdoms, some are underrate his achievements and discribes him as a figure immersed in partisan interests. However he and his family did nothing but endeavor to survive in aristocracy of Silla constantly. Therethrough, they contributed to the unification of Three Kingdoms and beginning of the royal family mid Silla by military power. In that process, occasionally, they drived sordid stratagems. But those were inevasible choice and outgrowth of their own volition. In 7thcentury, he and his father and granfather were, Three Kingdoms struggled fiercely. Specially, Silla was on the defensive in this times. The capture og Daeyasung-Castle brought about direct crisis in family of Kim yoosin and royal family of King Jinji. Kim yoosin pursued conquest of Baekje to resove crisis ultimately. The result is so-called the unification of Three Kingdoms. The family of Kim yoosin had no choice but to capitulate cause of weak military force. But The family of Kim yoosin grew military power, finally joined in aristocracy of Silla. So he and his family military power could contribute to Silla`s needs of military power as a way to overcome crisis. Thus Kim yoosin and his family could take part in the unification of Three Kingdoms as a historical route with military power which is their own means of survival. We can find historical meanings of Kim yoosin and his family`s achievement.

After ascending the Hone, King Jinji(眞智王) got to face the biggest political crisis due to the death of his supporting power Geochilboo(居柒夫) and Kim, Moo-ryuk(金武力) and the threat of Dongyungye(銅輪系) standing face to face with him. In this condition, King Jinji may ye independently tried to administer political situation. However, on the other hand he may have strongly coped with the incursion of Baekje(百濟) externally and tried to promote the alliance wit new power internally. What attract our attention in King Jinji attempting the political consolidation with a new power was Misirang(未尸郎) and Jinjasa(眞慈師). King Jinji had an intention to pick out a talent called Misirang, absorb him into a political power, which was deeply related to Buddhism(佛敎). And another power was Saryangboo(沙梁部). Deciding to independently operating political situation King Jinji may have made his way through the unfavorably developing circumstances by the political consolidation with Dohwanyeo(桃花女) Group of Saryangboo. However, this effort of king Jinji ended in a failure, and he was dethroned for the reason of 'Politics is chaotic and impure(政亂荒음)' by kookin(國人) supporting Baekjeong(白淨) of Dongryungye. Likewise, the tate of Dohwanyeo and Bihyungrang(鼻荊郞) is thought to ye to do with the operation of political situation in the reign of King Jinji and the content of 'Politics is chaotic and impure' is not the result of the personal character of King Jinji but the expression of unstable political situation by the threat of then Dongryungye Power, in other words the symbolization of King Jinji's awareness of political crisis.
