The purpose of this paper is to investigate the importance of cultural understanding in EFL. Language is not only vocal symbols used for communication, but a product of its socio-cultural environment, developed over a long time with ideas, customs, skills, arts and tools which characterize those who use it. To learn a foreign language is to understand the culture of the society where it is spoken. So we can never fully understand or used a foreign language without knowledge of the cultural context of that language because language and culture are undeniably interwoven. Language and culture have been inseparably related to and influenced by each other and there have never been pople without their own culture or their own tongue. Languages become different from one another according to culture, condensing and representing all aspects of culture. This paper discusses the importance of cultural understanding in teaching a second or foreign language, comparing the different cultural features between Koreans and Americans and introducing various methods in teaching the target culture in EFL. The people who live in different cultural atmospheres have different ways of life, so teaching culture is as important as teaching language skills in English classes. The purpose of this study was to analyze the improvement of the learner's interest and communicative competence thorough cultural understanding and to suggest some ideas for developing and implementing a cultural syllabus in English classes. This paper is organized as follows : chapter Ⅰ introduces the significance and the aims of cultural education; chapter Ⅱ describes the theories that are the background to this study and the definition of culture and the relationships between language and culture; the relationship between communication and culture; the necessity of cultural education; chapter Ⅲ deals with the differences between Korean culture and its American counterpart in a line of thinking, a way of life, customs, and nonverbal language; chapter Ⅳ presents effective methods of cultural education through the various methods and strategies of English teachers in teaching culture; chapter Ⅴ concludes this study. It is suggested that English teachers help students recognize, internalize and gain the insight related to any similarities and differences between the Korean culture and the American culture, when they teach English as a foreign language. In this way the students will gain a more meaningful understanding of the language and its usage.
