This paper discusses an English listening comprehension leaching method for cognitive strategy development of begining level students, especially first year students of middle school of Korea The discussion is directed mainly towards a teacher whose learners need to acquire communicative competence, which will enable them to cope with every context and every situation My purpose is to suggest English listening activities through which teachers can help learners to go beyond the mastery of English grammatical sturctures, to the point where they can use them to communicate meanings in real situations The emphasis in the discussion is on listening comprehension activities where we can provide learners more systematic opportunities for developing their intrinsic cognitive strategies The nature of listening comprehension means that the learner should be encouraged to engage in an active process of listening for meanings, using not only the linguistic cues but also his nonlinguistic knowledge Here this study suggests that the listening skill is to be developed only by listening, and the listening tasks should be given realistically and authentically without any analysis of grammatical items, without any word-for-word translation, and without any leading of written forms That is, listening skill should be trained only by actual listening of real voices of native speakers with situational meanings In addition, it is discussed that the listening parts in the middle school English textbooks based on the 6th Educationsl Reform Movement In Korea seem to pursue the goal of acquisition of oral proficiency very effectively
