Corticai Dysplasia(CD) is increasingly recognized as a cause of intractable epilepsy since it can be easily diagnosed with high resolution magnetic resonance imaging(MRI). We analyzed 24 consecutive cases with cortical dysplasia who underwent resective surgery at our institute between September. 1992 and December. 1995. MRI was demonstrated to be a decisive tool to identify CD in 16 cases(66.7%). However, the remaining 8 cases(93.9%) were confirmed to have CD based on histological examination. Location of the lesion included temporal(n=9), central(n=5), multilobar(n=5), and frontal(n=5). Intracranial EEG recording was performed to delineate the epileptogenic zons in 16 cases : subdural grid(10 cases) and depth electrode(6 cases). Resection was performed in temporal(n=9), frontal(n=7), central(n=5). parietal(n=1), and muitilobar(n=1). Complete resection was possible in 15(62.5%) and partial resection in 9(37.5%). Histological examination revealed dyslamination of cortical layers only(n=9), additional dysplastic neurons(n=7), and additional balloon cells(n=8). Surgical outcome was graded as seizure free(n=14 : 58.3%), rare seizures(n=3 : 12.5%). <50% reduction of seizure frequency(n=2 : 8%), and no change(n=5 : 20.8%) after mean follow-up of 12.7 months. The most influencing factor on the surgical outcome was the degree of completeness of resection(p<0.05). However. detectability of CD on MRI, severity of histological findings, age of seizure onset, and duration of seizure were not significantly related with the surgical outcome High suspicion is required to detect the CD among the patients with intractable epilepsy and surgical strategies should be well-planned to improve the surgical outcome in the patients with CD.

The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) has been applied widely in various decision making fields. One of advantages of the AHP is the consistency test. However, it has several problems such as the limit of its concept, the limit of 9 scales and stern criteria, contradictory pairwise comparison. In this paper, we propose new criteria for the consistency with more realistic and ideal conditions. To derive the criteria, we conduct the simulation and use the bootstrap method, which is one of resampling techniques in the simulation area.

To determine the characteristic double contrast barium enema findings of ileo-cecal and colonic tuberculosis and to make differential diagnosis from other bowel inflammatory disease. Sixty-seven patients confirmed as ileo-cecal and/or colonic-tuberculosis in six hospitals were evaluated retrospectively. The diagnosis was proven by endoscopic biopsy, surgery, and clinical follow up. Nine of 67 patients were excluded because radiologic findings were normal though endocopic biopsy examinations resulted in tuberculosis. Histopathological diagnosis were madein 58 cases as follows: endoscopic biopsy(n=29), operation(n=12), follow up examination(n=14), tissue culture(n=1), laparoscopic biopsy(n=2). There were 30 men and 28 females. The mean age were 36 yrs(range:16-67), 34 patients were in the second and third decade. The distribution of lesions, morphological characteristics, mucosal changes, ulcer shape and depth, associated with other tuberculous lesion, multiplicity were retrospectively analyzed in the findngs of double contrast barim enema. The commonest clinical symptoms were abdominal pain(n=35, 60%) and diarrhea(n=18, 31%). The chest radiography revealed association of pulmonary tuberculosis in 39 cases. Tuberculous lesions of other organs except chest were present in five cases. Double contrast barium enema findings showed a thickening and irregularity of intestinal mucosal fold(n=29, 50%), bowel contraction and/or shortening(n=26, 45%). There were small, nodular, superficial ulcers in the case of ulcer depth less than 2 mm in the depth. As many as 39 cases(67%) in this series had two or more lesions in the intestinal tuberculosis. The involved segment revealed symmetrical feature(n=21, 36%). Inflammatory pseudopolypoid lesions were noted in 30 cases(52%). The ileo-cecal region was involved in 38 cases(66%). The ascending colon(n=25, 43%) was the second commonest site with or without contiguous cecal involvement. Lesions in terminal ileum, ileo-cecal valve, transverse colon, descending colon and appendix were seen in 19, 18, 18, 12 and seven cases, respectively. Among 18 cases of ileo-cecal valve lesions, there were incompetency in nine cases(16%) and wide gapping in four cases(7%). In 14 cases, tuberculous enterocolitis was diagnosed by clinical follow-up and double contrast barium enema study. 12 out of 14 cases, the findings of double contrast barium enema of tuberculous enterocolitis were normalized after anti-tuberculous medication. However, two cases showed more aggravated state than before due to inappropriate treatment. Double contrast barium enema plays an important role in the diagnosis of tuberculous enterocolitis, determines the type, site and extent of the involvement and helps in treatment guide by using sequential studies.

<P>Somatic cell nuclear transfer (scNT) is a useful way to create cloned animals. However, scNT clones exhibit high levels of phenotypic instability. This instability may be due to epigenetic reprogramming and/or genomic damage in the donor cells. To test this, we produced transgenic pig fibroblasts harboring the truncated human thrombopoietin (hTPO) gene and used them as donor cells in scNT to produce first-generation (G1) cloned piglets. In this study, 2,818 scNT embryos were transferred to 11 recipients and five G1 piglets were obtained. Among them, a clone had a dimorphic facial appearance with severe hypertelorism and a broad prominent nasal bridge. The other clones looked normal. Second-generation (G2) scNT piglets were then produced using ear cells from a G1 piglet that had an abnormal nose phenotype. We reasoned that, if the phenotypic abnormality of the G1 clone was not present in the G2 and third-generation (G3) clones, or was absent in the G2 clones but reappeared in the G3 clones, the phenotypic instability of the G1 clone could be attributed to faulty epigenetic reprogramming rather than to inherent/accidental genomic damage to the donor cells. Blastocyst rates, cell numbers in blastocyst, pregnancy rates, term placenta weight and ponderal index, and birth weight between G1 and G2 clones did not differ, but were significantly (P < 0.05) lower than control age- and sex-matched piglets. Next, we analyzed global methylation changes during development of the preimplantation embryos reconstructed by donor cells used for the production of G1 and G2 clones and could not find any significant differences in the methylation patterns between G1 and G2 clones. Indeed, we failed to detect the phenotypic abnormality in the G2 and G3 clones. Thus, the phenotypic abnormality of the G1 clone is likely to be due to epigenetic dysregulation. Additional observations then suggested that expression of the hTPO gene in the transgenic clones did not appear to be the cause of the phenotypic abnormality in the G1 clones and that the abnormality was acquired by only a few of the G1 clone's cells during its gestational development. To construct transfurmed Bm5 cells, Autographa californica nuclear polyhedrosis virus(AcNPV) IE1 gene, an immediate early viral gene was firstly used in this study. AcNPV IE1 gene, which shares on 95.3% nucleotide sequence homology with Bombyx mori nuclear polyhedrosis virus (BmNPV) IE1 gene, was isolated and cloned into pBluescript. Neomycin gene from pKO-neo was inserted under the control of the IE1 promoter to yield pAcIE1-neo. The plasmid pAcIE1-neo was transfected into Bm5 or Sf9 cells, and neomycin-resistant cells were selected in TC100 medium containing 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS) and 1 mg/ml G4l8 for two weeks. Individual clones were picked and each was amplified for further characterization. The genomic DNA from neomycin-resistant cells was isolated and characterized by PCR using AcNPV IEI gene-specific primers and by Southern blot analysis using neomycin gene probe. We concluded that AcNPV IE1 gene was functional in B. mori-derived Bm5 cells as well as Spodoptera fugjprrda-derived Sf9 cells to produce stably-transformed insect cells

We determined the influence of Sargassum beds on the water quality in Gamak Bay, Korea. Water temperature and salinity range from 3.3 to 23.4℃ and from 29.6 to 33.7 psu, respectively. Dissolved oxygen was 10.45mg L-1 in the Sargassum bed and 9.23mg L-1 in the control. Chlorophyll-a was 3.90μg L-1 in the Sargassum bed and 2.21μg L-1 in the control. Chemical oxygen demand were 1.14mg L-1 in the Sargassum bed and 1.43mg L-1 in the control. Total nitrogen were 0.038mg L-1 in the Sargassum bed and 0.067 mg L-1 in the control. Total phosphorus were 0.043mg L-1 in the Sargassum bed and 0.072mg L-1 in the control. Multivariate statistical analysis was used to analyze data. Water temperature was highly positively correlated with DO(p<0.01). T-N was highly positively correlated with T-P(p<0.01).
