Polyurethane (PU) was evaluated for its possibility as an immobilization matrix for the raw biomass of Corynebacterium glutamicum. Initially, different blending ratios of the raw biomass to PU weight were tested, and the ratio of 7 : 3 was identified as the optimal condition. PU-immobilized biosorbent (PUIB) with a particle size ranging from 0.425 to 0.18mm was selected for the adsorption of Reactive Yellow 2 (RY2). The uptake of RY2 on the PUIB was favorable at acidic pH, especially below 3. According to the Langmuir model, the maximum RY2 uptakes were estimated to be 104.0, 93.3, and 87.3mg/g at pH 2, 3, and 4, respectively. The pseudo-first-order and pseudo-secondorder models were applied to fit the biosorption kinetic data; the latter model fitted the data well with a high coefficient of determination (R2) and low average percentage error (ε) values. The RY2-sorbed PUIB was able to be regenerated and reused for five cycles of the adsorption and desorption processes.
Results of Postoperative Radiotherapy for Breast Carcinoma

저자들은 1986년부터 1991년까지 경북대학교 병원에서 근치적 목적으로 수술 및 수술후 방사선치료를 받은 33명의 유방암 환자를 대상으로 생존율 및 예후 인자에 대하여 후향적 분석을 실시하였다. 33명의 환자중 13명이 Ⅱ병기에, 20명이 Ⅲ병기에 해당되었다. 수술 방법은 근치 유방절제술을 시행한 4례를 제외하고 모두 변형 근치 유방절제술이었다. 추적관찰기간은 1년에서 6년이었다. 5년 생존율 및 5년 무병 생존율은 각각 62%와 47%였다. 생존율에 유의한 영향을 끼친 인자는 전체 병기(p=0.008) 및 원발 병소의 병기(p=0.008)였고, 나이, 임파절 병기, 원발 병소의 크기, 그리고 임파절의 수 등은 유의한 영향을 끼치지 않았다. 국소제발율은 21%였으며, 영향을 끼친 인자는 원발병소의 병기와 임파절의 수였으나 통계학적 유의성은 없었다. 원격전이는 33명중 10명(30%)에서 보였고, 골 전이가 가장 않았다. 저자들의 치료성적 및 다른 저자들의 결과를 종합해 볼 때 수술후 방사선치료가 실패율이 높은 유방암 환자에서 국소치유율과 생존율을 향상시키는 역할을 하고 있음을 알 수 있었다.

<P><B>Background and Purpose</B></P><P>Endothelial impairment is a linking mechanism between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and cardiovascular diseases. Profiles of endothelial microparticles (EMPs) and endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) reflect the degree of endothelial impairment. The aims of this study were to measure the levels of EMPs and progenitor cells in OSA, determine the correlations between these factors and OSA severity and the degree of atherosclerosis, and document any changes in these factors after therapy.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>Subjects with (<I>n</I>=82) and without (<I>n</I>=22) OSA were recruited prospectively. We measured the number of colony-forming units (CFU) in cell culture as the endothelial progenitor cell index, and the number of EMPs using flow cytometry with CD31 [platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule (PECAM)], CD42 (platelet glycoprotein), annexin V, and CD62E (E-selectin) antibodies at baseline and after 4-6 weeks of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy. Carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) was regarded as a marker of atherosclerosis.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>The levels of PECAM<SUP>+</SUP>CD42<SUP>-</SUP> (<I>p</I><0.001), PECAM<SUP>+</SUP>annexin V<SUP>+</SUP> (<I>p</I><0.001), and E-selectin<SUP>+</SUP> microparticles (<I>p</I>=0.001) were higher in OSA subjects than in non-OSA subjects. The number of CFU did not differ between the two groups. OSA severity independently predicted the levels of PECAM<SUP>+</SUP>CD42<SUP>-</SUP> (<I>p</I>=0.02) and PECAM<SUP>+</SUP>annexin V<SUP>+</SUP> (<I>p</I>=0.004). Carotid IMT was correlated with OSA severity (<I>p</I><0.001), PECAM<SUP>+</SUP>CD42<SUP>-</SUP> (<I>p</I>=0.03), and PECAM<SUP>+</SUP>annexin V<SUP>+</SUP> (<I>p</I>=0.01). Neither OSA severity nor carotid IMT was correlated with either the number of CFU or E-selectin<SUP>+</SUP>. CPAP therapy decreased the occurrence of E-selectin<SUP>+</SUP> (<I>p</I><0.001) in 21 of the OSA subjects, but had no effect on the other microparticles of the number of CFU.</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>OSA led to the overproduction of EMPs, which moderately correlated with OSA severity and the degree of atherosclerosis, and partly responded to therapy. The endothelial impairment might contribute to future cardiovascular events.</P>

<P>With the acceleration of urbanization, impervious surface spreads due to increase of rainfall effluent; consequently, plenty of pollutants occur instantaneously, and severity of a problem caused by being worse of the river and water system is coming to the forefront. Nation Water Quality Inventory reported that 30% of the cause of water quality getting worse is caused by non-point pollutants, and 64% of the cause of polluted water quality of the lake around North Carolina is resulted from non-point pollutants of urban area. This study developed a system that treats and removes pollutants occurring in an impervious area of the urban district by using polymer media. Polymer media, made from polypropylene materials, has float ability and an irregular form. Also this study showed that polymer media has an excellent filtering function of pollutants due to porosity on the surface, and the increase of specific surface area, so that it has an excellent function to remove suspended solids (SS), organic materials and nutritive salts in effluent water on the road side. Treatment efficiency of pollutants in an impervious area of the urban district through application of polymer media to the site is 92.1% and average EMC of suspended solids (SS) is 19.74 mg/L. In addition, treatment efficiency of CODcr is 82.3%, and the efficiency of TN and TP is 50.4% and 73.9%, respectively.</P>
