With the widespread use of broad-spectrum antibiotics in clinical practice, the emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) gram-negative bacteria has become a global problem. The MDR Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection is especially difficult to treat and increases mortality in critically ill patients. Ceftolozane-tazobactam (Zerbaxa™) is a fifth-generation cephalosporin and beta-lactamase inhibitor that has proved to be effective for treating complicated urinary tract infections and complicated intra-abdominal infections caused by MDR P. aeruginosa. Herein, we report the first case of pediatric hematologic cancer in Korea that was successfully treated for MDR P. aeruginosa bacteremia with Ceftolozane-tazobactam.
대학생의 영작문에 나타난 시제와 가정법 사용 오류에 관한 연구

This study aims to examine errors in college students’ English compositions, focusing on the use of tense and subjunctive in order to provide teachers or text developers with basic materials of teaching grammar and writing. Thirty students participated in both the controlled and the free writing sessions in which students translated 32 Korean sentences into English and described their activities in the past, present, and future forms of tense. In addition, they filled out a questionnaire about their attitude toward English writing and knowledge on tense and subjunctive. The authors counted the number of correct expressions of tense and subjunctive in their writings to determine each subject’s score and two native speakers graded each writing by the TWE (TOEFL) standards. Results showed that in the controlled writing the students used 44.07% of tense and subjunctive forms correctly. The majority of the errors were attributed to the intralingual ones. In the free writing, the accuracy rate was higher, 90.92%, which might be related to the students’ avoidance of uncertain expressions. The students showed a strong interest in English but lacked confidence in their writing. Further studies on the students’ writing would be desirable.
Synthesis and characterization of dexamethasone-conjugated linear polyethylenimine as a gene carrier

<P>Linear polyethylenimine (25 kDa, LPEI25k) has been shown to be an effective non-viral gene carrier with higher transfection and lower toxicity than branched polyethylenimine (BPEI) of comparable molecular weight. In this study, dexamethasone was conjugated to LPEI25k to improve the efficiency of gene delivery. Dexamethasone is a synthetic glucocorticoid receptor ligand. Dexamethasone-conjugated LPEI25k (LPEI–Dexa) was evaluated as a gene carrier in various cells. Gel retardation assays showed that LPEI–Dexa completely retarded plasmid DNA (pDNA) at a 0.75:1 weight ratio (LPEI/pDNA). LPEI–Dexa had the highest transfection efficiency at a 2:1 weight ratio (LPEI–Dexa/DNA). At this ratio, the size of the LPEI–Dexa/pDNA complex was approximately 125 nm and the zeta potential was 35 mV. LPEI–Dexa had higher transfection efficiency than LPEI and Lipofectamine 2000. In addition, the cytotoxicity of LPEI–Dexa was much lower than that of BPEI (25 kDa, BPEI25k). Saengcheonggukjang, known as Natto in Japan, is a soybean fermented food which is made from steamed soybean, Bacillus and water. Demand of Saengcheonggukjang has increased because it does not have much smell compared to Cheonggukjang. Seven varieties of Saengcheonggukjang were investigated and compared in terms of 100 seed weight, quality characteristics, hard seed rate, and water absorption rate in order to determine the suitability of Korean soybeans. In addition, each characteristic of Saengcheonggukjang was compared. 'Hoseo' and 'Haewon' showed low 100 seed weight with 8.41 g and 8.11 g, respectively. The water absorption rate was higher in 'Hoseo' and 'Pungwon' than in Japan varieties. The yield of Saengcheonggukjang was significantly different for each variety. No differences were observed in yield and hardness of Saengcheonggukjang with respect to the varieties and sowing date. 'Haewon' showed the highest amino nitrogen content with 575.0 mg%. Viscous material content did not appear to differ between varieties. These results suggested that 'Hoseo' and 'Haewon' can be considered as suitable candidates for yield and quality of Saengcheonggukjang compared to Japan varieties.
