The aim of this study was to compare the physicochemical changes of hot-boned chicken breast and leg muscles. Chicken breast and leg muscles from 56 broilers were excised within a 15 min post-mortem (PM) and stored at $20^{\circ}C$. Physicochemical traits were determined at 0.5, 6, 12, and 24 h PM. The ultimate pH of leg muscle was higher than that of breast muscle (p<0.05). The content of glycogen in the breast muscle was relatively higher than that in the leg muscle until 6 h PM (p<0.05). R-values showing rigor mortis of breast and leg muscles were completed after or before 6 h PM. Breast muscle had less cooking loss than leg muscle (p<0.05). Drip loss did not significantly differ between breast and leg muscles with the exception of that at 6 h PM. The sarcomere length of leg muscle was relatively longer than that of breast muscle (p<0.05). The MFI of leg muscle was significantly lower than that of breast muscle (p<0.05). The shear force of leg muscle was lower than that of breast muscle at 6 and 12 h PM (p<0.05); however, that of both muscles did not significantly differ at 24 h PM.
Distalization pattern of whole maxillary dentition according to force application points
Eui-Hyang Sung,Sung-Jin Kim,Youn-Sic Chun,Young-Chel Park,Hyung-Seog Yu,Kee-Joon Lee 대한치과교정학회 2015 대한치과교정학회지 Vol.45 No.1
Objective: The purpose of this study was to observe stress distribution and displacement patterns of the entire maxillary arch with regard to distalizing force vectors applied from interdental miniscrews. Methods: A standard three-dimensional finite element model was constructed to simulate the maxillary teeth, periodontal ligament, and alveolar process. The displacement of each tooth was calculated on x, y, and z axes, and the von Mises stress distribution was visualized using color-coded scales. Results: A single distalizing force at the archwire level induced lingual inclination of the anterior segment, and slight intrusive distal tipping of the posterior segment. In contrast, force at the high level of the retraction hook resulted in lingual root movement of the anterior segment, and extrusive distal translation of the posterior segment. As the force application point was located posteriorly along the archwire, the likelihood of extrusive lingual inclination of the anterior segment increased, and the vertical component of the force led to intrusion and buccal tipping of the posterior segment. Rotation of the occlusal plane was dependent on the relationship between the line of force and the possible center of resistance of the entire arch. Conclusions: Displacement of the entire arch may be dictated by a direct relationship between the center of resistance of the whole arch and the line of action generated between the miniscrews and force application points at the archwire, which makes the total arch movement highly predictable.
Melanoacanthoma on the leg clinically resembling nevus spilus

Melanoacanthoma is a rare benign mixed tumor of both keratinocytes and melanocytes. The cell of origin of these tumors is thought to be basal and prickle cell keratinocytes in conjunction with pigment laden dendritic melanocytes. Melanoacanthomas usually manifest as solitary or multiple pigmented papules, plaques, cutaneous horns and nodules in face, trunk or extremities. Clinically, melanoacanthoma could show variable features such as squamous cell carcinoma or melanoma, but nevus spilus-like melanoacanthoma has not been reported. A 62-year female presented with asymptomatic, pigmented lesions on her lower leg for the past 20 years. It clinically appears as a hyperpigmented patch containing scattered multiple dark, papular foci. It has gradually increased in size over time. Histopathology revealed hyperkeratosis, acanthosis with tumor nests composed of keratinocytes along with scattered large dendritic melanocytes laden with abundant melanin granules spread throughout the epidermis. No cytologic atypia was noticed. The dendritic melanocytes were demonstrated by the HMB-45 stain and S-100 stain. These findings were consistent with melanoacanthoma. We hereby report a case of melanoacanthoma resembling nevus spilus on the lower leg, which showed an unusual clinical presentation.

Genetic variation in the Asian shore crab Hemigrapsus sanguineus was determined from partial mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences of the cytochrome b (Cytb) gene. Samples included 143 crabs from six localities along three coastlines in South Korea. A nucleotide sequence analysis revealed 38 variable sites in a 470-bp sequence, which defined 37 haplotypes. The haplotypes were not associated geographically and had a shallow genealogy. Pairwise FST tests and a two-dimensional scaling analysis revealed no significant genetic differentiation among most of the populations. The low pairwise comparison values, but significant genetic differentiation of a northeastern population from all other populations, might have been influenced by a restriction in gene flow caused by hydrographic conditions such as ocean boundaries. The high haplotype diversity, low nucleotide diversity, and time since H. sanguineus expansion in Korean coastal waters indicate rapid population growth and a recent, sudden expansion in the Late Pleistocene.

A liquid-permeable concept in a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) structure is proposed to achieve highly sensitive color-tuning property through the change of the effective refractive index of the dielectric insulator layer. A semicontinuous top metal film with nanoapertures, adopted as a transreflective layer for MIM resonator, allows to tailor the nanomorphology of a dielectric layer through selective etching of the underneath insulator layer, resulting in nanopillars and hollow voids in the insulator layer. By allowing outer mediums to enter into the hollow voids of the dielectric layer, such liquid-permeable MIM architecture enables to achieve the wavelength shift as large as 323.5 nm/RIU in the visible range, which is the largest wavelength shift reported so far. Our liquid-permeable approaches indeed provide dramatic color tunablility, a real-time sensing scheme, long-term durability, and reproducibility in a simple and scalable manner.
[FIG OMISSION]

Treatment outcome of ductal carcinoma in situ patients treated with postoperative radiation therapy
Yu Jin Lim,Kyubo Kim,Eui Kyu Chie,Wonshik Han,Dong Young Noh,Sung W. Ha 대한방사선종양학회 2014 Radiation Oncology Journal Vol.32 No.1
Purpose: To evaluate the outcome of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) patients who underwent surgery followed by radiation therapy (RT). Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 106 DCIS patients who underwent surgery followed by postoperative RT between 1994 and 2006. Ninety-four patients underwent breast-conserving surgery, and mastectomy was performed in 12 patients due to extensive DCIS. Postoperative RT was delivered to whole breast with 50.4 Gy/28 fx. Tumor bed boost was offered to 7 patients (6.6%). Patients with hormonal receptor-positive tumors were treated with hormonal therapy. Results: The median follow-up duration was 83.4 months (range, 33.4 to 191.5 months) and the median age was 47.8 years. Ten patients (9.4%) had resection margin <1 mm and high-grade and estrogen receptor-negative tumors were observed in 39 (36.8%) and 20 (18.9%) patients, respectively. The 7-year ipsilateral breast tumor recurrence (IBTR)-free survival rate was 95.3%. Resection margin (<1 or ≥1 mm) was the significant prognostic factor for IBTR in univariate and multivariate analyses (p < 0.001 and p = 0.016, respectively). Conclusion: Postoperative RT for DCIS can achieve favorable treatment outcome. Resection margin was the important prognostic factor for IBTR in the DCIS patients who underwent postoperative RT.
The protease inhibitor, elafin, induces p53-dependent apoptosis in human melanoma cells
Yu, Kyung Sook,Lee, Yangsoon,Kim, Chung Mi,Park, Eui-Chul,Choi, Juhyun,Lim, Dae-Sik,Chung, Young-Hwa,Koh, Sang Seok Wiley Subscription Services, Inc., A Wiley Company 2010 International journal of cancer: Journal internati Vol.127 No.6

Expression of the protease inhibitor elafin is deregulated in several human cancers. However, functions of the protein in cancer are yet to be established. Here, we show that elafin elicits pro-apoptotic effects in melanoma cells but not in normal melanocytes. Elafin triggered the intrinsic apoptotic pathway as evidenced by the increased caspase 9 activity and unaltered caspase 8 activity. Caspase 9-specific siRNA, but not caspase 8-specific siRNA, dramatically abrogated elafin-induced apoptosis. Elevated level of p53 was observed, resulting in increased transcriptional activation and consequent expression of downstream effector molecules (Bax, Puma, Noxa, p21). Moreover, the apoptotic effect of elafin was inhibited by p53-specific siRNA and the p53 inhibitor pifithrin-α. Elafin treatment of xenograft mice of melanoma cells led to significantly smaller tumor sizes compared with those of untreated control mice. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed decreased elafin expression in melanoma tissue specimens. Western blot and reverse transcription analyses indicated transcriptional repression of the elafin gene in melanoma cells. Our results collectively indicate that elafin induces apoptosis in melanoma cells through a p53-dependent intrinsic apoptotic pathway, and that repression of elafin expression in melanoma may contribute to disease progression.
