Backgrounds Arctigenin derived from the seeds of Arctium lappa Linnaeus is known as an anticancer drug candidate by targeting various pathways involved in anticancer therapy. Methods Using 2D monolayer and 3D spheroid culture systems in nasal septum carcinoma RPMI-2650 cells, the effects of arctigenin and dexamethasone on cell viability, ROS levels, ATP level, mitochondrial function, apoptosis and necroptosis were examined. Results The combination treatment of both compounds induced strong cytotoxicity, accompanied by increases of sub-G0/ G1 peak, annexin V-PE-positive cells, and ROS levels, loss of mitochondrial membrane potential, and decrease of cellular ATP content. These changes were observed as simultaneous induction of DNA damage, apoptosis, and necroptosis. A series of changes by arctigenin and dexamethasone were efficiently restored by decreasing ROS levels or supplementing ATP. Treatment of 3D spheroids with arctigenin and dexamethasone decreased cell viability in the spheroids, but it was slightly resistant than cells under 2D conditions. In addition, this phenomenon was accompanied by an increase in mediators for both apoptosis and necroptosis. Conclusion Results of this study suggest that the apoptosis and necroptosis-inducing effects of arctigenin are associated with ATP depletion due to oxidative mitochondrial dysfunction.

Idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome is characterized by marked elevation of eosinophil count ( >1,500/㎣) in peripheral blood without explaining etiology. It shows tissue involvement in many organs such as liver, G-I tract, myocar dium, lung, skin, kidney and nerve. Some case of hypereosinophilic syndrome with hepatic involvement have been reported, but not much. We have recently experienced a case with idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome of a 40 year old man who presented with RUQ pain. By abdominal CT, ill- defined subcapsular hematoma was detected. Liver biopsy showed eosinophilic infiltration within the portal tract and sinusoid. Drain procedure and corticosteroid adminiiatbrought marked improvement of clinical manifestation, hematologic abnormality and radiologic abnormality.

Effects of replacement of sucrose with fructooligosaccharide(FO) on the sponge cake quality were investigated. As FO level increased, the specific gravity of batter decreased. Adding FO increased the specific volume and expansion ratio. Especially, the 40% FO replacement cake showed the highest specific volume and expansion ratio. A higher degree of FO replacement for sucrose made cakes darker and more moist. The 40% FO replacement cake showed good acceptability.

We experienced 3 cases of fixed type cutaneous sporotrichosis confined to the face. Case 1 was a 32-month old child, affected over the nose. Case 2 was a 25-year old man, affected over the left cheek. Case 3 was a 71-year old man, affected over the nose. Histopathologically, chronic granulomatous inflammation with pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia was observed. Mycologically, typical dark brown to black colored colonines with moist, wrinkled and membranous surfaces were cultured. All patients were completely cured by oral administration of saturated KI and itraconazole combined therapy in a short period(40-90 days).

The research aimed to investigate the current status of teaching and learning for the scientifically middle school students through survey questionnaire of 79 practicing science teachers at special classes in middle schools (SCMS) and gifted education institutions affiliated with university (GEIU). The most frequently used teaching methods appeared as hands-on activity at laboratory and discussion and presentation. For the level of teaching and learning for the gifted, it that teachers at GEIU perceived their teaching higher than teachers at SCMS. Teachers with master degrees perceived higher than those with or degrees. Participation in inservice training programs for gifted education positively influenced on their teaching level far teachers at SCMS. However, the apposite appeared for teachers at GEIU.
N-Benzoyl-4(5)-nitroimidazole의 가수분해반응에 대한 속도론적 연구

The rate constants for the hydrolysis of N-benzoyl-4(5)-nitroimidazole were determined in water at the 25℃ under pseudo first order conditions by uv/vis spectrophotometer. The pH independent reaction and the hydroxide ion catalyzed reaction were observed from pH 6 to 1 and above pH 6, respectively. The D2O solvent isotope effect couldn't observe in the pH independent reaction, that is, k0 H₂O/k0 D₂O 1.0. Activation parameters in the water catalyzed reaction were calculated to △H‡ =12.3 Kcal and △S‡ = -32.6 e.u. respectively. Thus, the water catalyzed reaction is more important to nucleophilic attack to the carbonyl carbon than the protonation of the leaving group In the transition state. Above pH 6 the hydrolytic reaction showers hydroxide ion catalyzed reaction.

대기 aerosol의 크기별 입자수를 측정하고 Mie 이론을 써서 시정을 계산하였다. 1988년 3월과 4월에 입자직경 0.01∼10㎛ 범위의 aerosol을 측정하고 가시광선에 대한 소산효율과 소산계수를 구하였다. 입자직경이 0.1㎛보다 작을 때에는 aerosol이 소산과 시정에 거의 영향을 미치지 않으나 직경 0.1∼1.0㎛ 범위의 aerosol 입자에 의해서는 큰 영향을 받았다. 황사의 영향을 받은 4월에는 1.0㎛ 이상의 큰 입자의 수가 증가함에 따라 소산계수의 뚜렷한 증가를 가져왔다. 따라서 4월의 시정감소는 황사의 영향을 크게 받았음을 알 수 있었다. 소산계수와 시정의 일변화는 aerosol의 크기별 농도, 대기오염, 대기의 성질에 따라 달라졌다. Visibility was calculated using the Mie theory from measured aerosol size distribution. Aerosol was sampled and measured in the size range of 0.01∼10㎛ in March and April, 1988 in order to obtain extinction coefficient for visible light. The calculated light extinction coefficient and visibility showed that they were little affected by fine particles of diameter less than 0.1㎛, while they were greatly influenced by particles of diameter range of 0.1∼1.0㎛. In April, the extinction coefficient was increased remarkably by particles of diameter larger than 1.0㎛, when Hwangsa(aeolean yellow sand) appeared. Therefore, it was known that the visibility degradation in April was closely related to Hwangsa. The diurnal variations of extinction coefficient and visibility were dependent on the aerosol concentration, air pollution, and atmospherid properties.
Hollow-Fiber LPME를 이용한 잔류농약 검출

A method for the determination of trace amount of pesticides in aqueous samples using hollow fiber-liquid phase microextraction(HF-LPME) and capillary gas chromatograph/micro electron capture detector(GC/μ ECD) has been established. HF-LPME method has been optimized with respect to several experimental parameters including the effects of extraction solvent, extraction time and extraction temperature for the determination of pesticides from aqueous samples. The calibration curves for pesticides showed good linearity (above r²=0.98). The established method is feasible for the determination of trace amounts of pesticides in several aqueous sample. The limit of detection(LOD) and the limit of quantitation(LOQ) have been found to be 0.05~1.0 and 0.5~2.5 ng/mL, respectively. The established HF-LPME method for the analysis of pesticides from aqueous sample can be used for the determination of biological, food and environmental samples.
