This study researched the population of ecological characteristics of the goldeyes rockfish Sebasetes thompsoni sampled by gill net in the Ulleungdo area from February 2013 to February 2014 in order to assess the current stock status and provide scientific advice for management implementation. The instantaneous coefficient of total mortality (Z) was 0.78/year and the survival rate (S) was 0.459. The instantaneous coefficient of natural mortality (M) was 0.461/year. Based on the estimates of Z and M, the instantaneous coefficient of fishing mortality (F) was 0.318/year. The age at first capture (t<sub>c</sub>) was 4.41/years. Current Yield-per-recruit (YPR) was 30.83 g, and fishing mortality at maximum YPR (F<sub>max</sub>) and fishing mortality corresponding to 10% of the maximum slope in YPR curve (F<sub>0.1</sub>) were 3.257/year and 0.673/year, respectively. F<sub>35%</sub>and F<sup>40%</sup>, indicating fishing mortalities at 35% and 40% of maximum Spawning biomass-per-recruit (SBPR), were 0.619/year and 0.509/year, respectively. Based on the biological reference points, fishing mortality at overfished threshold yield (F<sub>OTY</sub>) was calculated as 0.509/year. Current SBPR/SBP<sub>RMSY was</sub>1.313 above 1.0, which means `not overfishe,` while current F/F<sub>OTY</sub> was 0.629 below 1.0, which indicates `not overfishing.` In conclusion, the current status of goldeyes rockfish was located in green zone (i.e., not overfished and not overfishing) according to the revised Kobe plot.

<P>Summary</P><P><U>Purpose:</U> </P><P>To evaluate the long-term efficacy and tolerability of topiramate (TPM) as add-on therapy in patients with refractory partial epilepsy.</P><P><U>Methods:</U> </P><P>This is a retrospective, single-center, long-term observational study. Patients fulfilling the criteria of medical intractability proposed by Berg et al. were entered into the study if they were newly prescribed TPM as add-on therapy between January 2000 and June 2002. The usual starting dosage of TPM was 50 mg/day and optimal-dose adjustments were made according to individual clinical responses. Efficacy and tolerability were analyzed every year during 5-year follow-up in the “intention-to-treat (ITT) population.” Retention rate was estimated by Kaplan-Meyer analysis.</P><P><U>Results:</U> </P><P>A total of 125 patients were included in the study and 107 patients (85.6%) were followed for 5 years. Retention rate was 87.2% at 1 year and 64% at 5 years. At the end of 5 years, the median seizure frequency reduction rate was 69.0% and responder rate was 43.2% in the ITT population. Cumulative seizure-free rate (SFR) was 30.4% and the terminal 1-year SFR was 12.8% in the ITT population (20.0% in completers) at 5-year follow-up. Adverse events (AEs) occurred in 39.2% of patients, including significant AEs leading to antiepileptic drug (AED) withdrawal in 14.4%. The most common AEs were anorexia (16.0%), weight loss (10.4%), and gastrointestinal symptoms (8.8%). Concomitant AEDs were reduced in 25.0% of the completers.</P><P><U>Discussion:</U> </P><P>Low-dose and slow-dose escalation of TPM in add-on therapy for patients with refractory partial epilepsy is effective and well tolerated in long-term, individualized clinical practice.</P>

Rice germplasm collections continue to grow in number and size around the world. Since maintaining and screening such massive resources remain as a great challenge, it is important to establish piratical ways to manage them. A core collection, by definition, refers to a subset of entire population but preserves most of the possible genetic diversity, enhancing the efficiency for germplasm utilizations. Here we reports the whole genome resequencing of the 137 Korean rice core set (KRICE_CORE) that represents 25,604 rice germplasms deposited in Korean genebank of Rural Development Administration (RDA). We implemented the Illumna HiSeq 2000 and 2500 platform to produce short reads and then assembled those with 9.8x depth using Nipponbare as a reference. Comparisons of the sequences with the reference genome yield more than 15 million(M) single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and 1.3M insertion/deletion (INDELs). Phylogenetic and population analyses using 2,046,529 high quality SNPs successfully assigned each rice accessions to the relevant subgroups, suggesting those SNPs comprehensively capture evolutionary signatures accumulated in rice subpopulations. Furthermore, genome-wide association studies (GWAS) for 4 exemplary agronomic traits from the KRIC_CORE manifest the utility of KRICE_CORE, identifying previously defined gene or novel genetic polymorphisms that potentially regulate the important phenotypes. This study provides strong evidences that the size of KRICE_CORE is small but contains such a high genetic and functional diversity across the genome. Thus those resequencing results will be useful for future breeding, functional and evolutionary studies in the post-genomic era.

Background : The aim of this study is to determine prognostic factors of breast cancer in Korean patients who underwent curative mastectomy. Methods : Medical records of 181 patients who underwent curative mastectomy were reviewed. Relapse-free survival and overall survival were documented for each patient. Factors influencing survival were analyzed using Cox proportional hazard model. Results : Overall 5-year survival rate was 82.0%, and 8-year survival rate was 74.7%. Multivariate analysis indicated that multiple axillary lymph node involvement (≥4), postmenopausal status, and negative estrogen receptor were independent adverse prognostic factors. The adjusted relative risks of multiple axillary lymph node involvement (≥4), postmenopausal status, and negative estrogen receptor were estimated 2.60 (95% Confidence Interval (CI): 1.28-5.30), 2.64 (95% CI: 1.46-4.79), and 2.27 (95% CI: 1.19-4.35), respectively. Conclusion : Multiple axillary lymph node involvement (≥4), postmenopausal status, and negative estrogen receptor were independent adverse prognostic factors in Korean breast cancer patients after curative mastectomy.(Korean J Med 58:446-452, 2000)
