Bacillus thuringiensis microbial insecticide products have been applied worldwide. Although a few cases of B. thuringiensis foodborne illness have been reported, little is known about the toxigenic properties of B. thuringiensis isolates. The aims of this study were to estimate the pathogenic potential of B. thuringiensis selected from microbial insecticide products, based on its possession of toxin genes and production of enterotoxins. Fifty-two B. thuringiensis strains selected from four kinds of microbial insecticide products were analyzed. PCR assay for detection of toxin genes and immunoassay for detection of enterotoxins were performed. The hemolysin BL complex as a major enterotoxin was produced by 17 (32.7%), whereas the non-hemolytic enterotoxin complex was detected in 1 (1.9%) of 52 B. thuringiensis strains. However, cytK, entFM, and ces genes were not detected in any of the tested B. thuringiensis strains. The potential risk of food poisoning by B. thuringiensis along with concerns over B. thuringiensis microbial insecticide products has gained attention recently. Thus, microbial insecticide products based on B. thuringiensis should be carefully controlled.
주요 가로수 묘목의 오존노출에 따른 대기오염내성지수 비교

가로수는 도시 생활에서 중요한 녹지의 한 부분이고 대기오염을 극복하기 위해서 건전한 생장을 하는 수종을 선정, 식재, 관리 하는 것이 필요하다. 오존은 수목에 활성산소를 만들어 생리적으로 부정적인 영향을 미치며 생태적인 피해를 유발한다. 본 연구는 국내 주요 가로수종인 왕벚나무(Prunus yedoensis), 느티나무(Zelkova serrata), 이팝나무(Chionanthus retusus), 그리고 소나무(Pinus densiflora.)의 묘목을 오존에 노출하여 실험하였다. 2년생 묘목을 Phytotron에서 100 nL·L-1 (ppb)의 농도로 약 4주간 실험하였다. 묘목이 생장하는 동안 오존에 대한 생화학적 반응 및 대기오염내성지수(APTI)를 비교하여 오존에 대한 반응을 평가하였다. 아스코르브산 함량, 총 엽록소 함량, pH, 상대수분함량의 수치를 바탕으로 대기오염내성지수를 계산했을 때 왕벚나무와 느티나무는 오존 처리구와 대조구간에 APTI의 변화가 통계적인 유의차를 보이지 않았고, 이팝나무는 오존처리구에서 증가했으며 소나무는 다른 수종에 비해서 감소했다. 본 실험을 통해, APTI를 산출하는 요소에 대한 수종별 반응이 다른 것을 확인하였으며, 이를 통해 수종과 도시 내 대기 환경에 상호작용을 이해하고 대기오염물질인 오존에 따른 도시 내 수종 선별에 대해서 예측할 수 있다. Street trees are very important to urban environments as they can alleviate air pollution. However, when ozone is absorbed through the stomata, it can induce the formation of free radicals inside the tree, negatively affecting the vegetation. The present study investigated the Air Pollution Tolerance Index (APTI) of four major street tree species: Prunus yedoensis, Zelkova serrata, Chionanthus retusus, and Pinus densiflora. Two-year-old seedlings were placed in a phytotron and fumigated with 100 nL·L-1 (ppb) ozone for 4 weeks, following which the ascorbic acid contents, chlorophyll contents, leaf pHs, and relative water contents were measured. There was no significant difference in the APTI of Prunus yedoensis and Zelkova serrata between the ozone and control treatments. By contrast, the ozone treatment caused the APTI of Chionanthus retusus to increase and that of Pinus densiflora to decrease compared with the respective controls. These results suggest that the APTI of these tree species exhibit very different responses to ozone. Therefore, more detailed research should be conducted on a range of species in the future.
Immediate Effect of Eye Movement on Static Balance according to Age in Elderly Individuals

Purpose: This study investigated changes in static balance during eye movement while in an upright standing position and compared static balance in elderly individuals according to age. Methods: A total of 154 elderly persons (male 23, female 136) were enrolled in the study. Participants followed an eye movement program that consisted of randomly occurring pursuit eye movement and saccadic eye movement. Participants were asked to remain in the double-leg standing position for 2 minutes 30 second while fixating their eyes on a specific target, after which they were instructed to perform eye movements for 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Static balance was measured in terms of the area, length, and average speed (cm/s) of the center of pressure (COP) displacement before and after eye movement intervention with the eyes open. Results: The area, length, and velocity of COP displacement improved significantly (p< 0.01) after intervention. No significant differences among age groups were observed. Conclusion: The results indicated that eye movement was an effective intervention for improving static balance in elderly persons.

Gastric cancer (GC), a leading cause of cancer-related mortality,remains a significant challenge despite recent therapeuticadvancements. In this study, we explore the potential of targetingcell surface glucose-regulated protein 94 (GRP94) withantibodies as a novel therapeutic approach for GC. Our comprehensiveanalysis of GRP94 expression across various cancertypes, with a specific focus on GC, revealed a substantial overexpressionof GRP94, highlighting its potential as a promisingtarget. Through in vitro and in vivo efficacy assessments, aswell as toxicological analyses, we found that K101.1, a fullyhuman monoclonal antibody designed to specifically target cellsurface GRP94, effectively inhibits GC growth and angiogenesiswithout causing in vivo toxicity. Furthermore, our findingsindicate that K101.1 promotes the internalization and concurrentdownregulation of cell surface GRP94 on GC cells. Inconclusion, our study suggests that cell surface GRP94 may bea potential therapeutic target in GC, and that antibody-basedtargeting of cell surface GRP94 may be an effective strategy forinhibiting GRP94-mediated GC growth and angiogenesis.

Objective Adults with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) experience significant difficulties with executive functioning (EF) and related adaptive skills, yet the lack of interventions in South Korea targeting these areas has resulted in a heightened need to develop an evidence- based program. Therefore, we developed a novel intervention aiming to enhance everyday EF and daily adaptive skills in adults with high-functioning ASD and conducted a pilot study to evaluate the validity and feasibility of the program. Methods A behavioral intervention of 10-weekly sessions was developed based on literature searches and focus group interviews. Seven adults with high-functioning ASD (mean age=20.29) participated in a single-group pilot trial. We used self and parent-report questionnaires as well as skills measured by assessment instruments to analyze differences before and after the intervention. Results Significant improvements were shown in everyday EF, including time management, organization, self-restraint, and regulation of emotions. Additionally, results demonstrated an enhancement in adaptive functioning, especially in the subdomains of daily living skills. Analyses of parental outcomes only revealed a significant decrease in the scores of emotion regulation. Conclusion The current study provides good evidence for the validity and feasibility of an intervention to improve everyday EF and adaptive skills in adults with ASD.
