        Two New Species of Placolecis (Lichenized Ascomycota) from China

        Two new species of the lichen genus Placolecis are discovered in China, namely P. kunmingensis An. C. Yin & Li S. Wang and P. sublaevis An. C. Yin & Li S. Wang. The new combination P. loekoesiana (S.Y. Kondr., Farkas, J.J. Woo & Hur) An. C. Yin is proposed. Placolecis kunmingensis is characterized by having simple, spherical or ellipsoid, hyaline spores, and pear-shaped pycnidia; while P. sublaevis can be distinguished by its thallus forming larger aggregations with slightly flattened lobes at the thallus margin, and urn-shaped pycnidia. Descriptions, a phylogenetic tree and a key are provided for all the known Placolecis species in China.

        Effect of cable stiffness on a cable-stayed bridge

        Cables are used in many applications such as cable-stayed bridges, suspension bridges, transmission lines, telephone lines, etc. Generally, the linear relationship is inadequate to present the behavior of cable structure. In finite element analysis, cables have always been modeled as truss elements. For these types of model, the nonlinear behavior of cables has been always ignored. In order to investigate the importance of the nonlinear effect on the structural system, the effect of cable stiffness has been studied. The nonlinear behavior of cable is due to its sag. Therefore, the cable pretension provides a large portion of the inherent stiffness. Since a cable-stayed bridge has numerous degrees of freedom, analytical methods at present are not convenient to solve this type of structures but numerical methods may be feasible. It is necessary to provide a different and more representative analytical model in order to present the effect of cable stiffness on cable-stayed bridges in numerical analysis. The characteristics of cable deformation have also been well addressed. A formulation of modified modulus of elasticity has been proposed using a numerical parametric study. In order to investigate realistic bridges, a cable-stayed bridge having the geometry similar to that of Quincy Bayview Bridge is considered. The numerical results indicate that the characteristics of the cable stiffness are strongly nonlinear. It also significantly affects the structural behaviors of cable-stayed bridge systems.

        Chemical Vapor Deposition Growth of Graphene Domains Across the Cu Grain Boundaries

        Many aspects in the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth of graphene remain unclear such as its behavior near the catalyst grain boundaries. Here we investigate the CVD growth mechanism of graphene across the Cu grain boundaries using unidirectional aligned graphene domains, which simplifies the analysis of both graphene and Cu to a large extent. We found that for a graphene domain grown across the Cu grain boundary, the domain orientation is determined by the Cu grain where the domain nucleation center is located, and the Cu grain boundary will not change the growth behavior for this graphene domain. This growth mechanism is consistent with the Custep-attached nucleation and edge-attachment-limited growth mechanism for H-terminated graphene domains and will provide more guidance for the synthesis of high-quality graphene with less domain boundaries.

        Utility of DNA barcoding for identification of common Vespa species (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) from Yunnan, China

        As traditional Chinese medicine and edible insects, Ve s p a hornets have high economic value and huge market demand. Hornet breeding has become an important way to increase the income of mountain farmers in China, but the limitation of traditional identification methods has become the bottleneck of the modern development of hornet resources. In this study, a simple and reliable method for the molecular identification of typical hornets from Yunnan was successfully established. In the NCBI database, DNA sequences of hornet samples were aligned as Vespa analis, Ve s p a b a s a l i s , Vespa velutina, Vespa mandarinia, Ve s p a m a g n i f i c a , Ve s p a b i n g h a m i , Ve s p a s o r o r by BLAST search. The efficiency of the PCR amplification of mitochondrial cytochrome C oxidase I (COI) gene sequences in all samples was 100% by using the optimized program. Moreover, a reference database for DNA barcodes of Vespa materials in Yunnan was constructed. This study provided a successful example for the identification of local insects of Yunnan and will be helpful to the development of wasp resources.

        Design and Optimization for the Windowless Target of the China Nuclear Waste Transmutation Reactor

        A windowless spallation target can provide a neutron source and maintain neutron chain reaction for a subcritical reactor, and is a key component of China's nuclear waste transmutation of coupling accelerator and subcritical reactor. The main issue of the windowless target design is to form a stable and controllable free surface that can ensure that energy spectrum distribution is acquired for the neutron physical design when the high energy proton beam beats the lead-bismuth eutectic in the spallation target area. In this study, morphology and flow characteristics of the free surface of the windowless target were analyzed through the volume of fluid model using computational fluid dynamics simulation, and the results show that the outlet cross section size of the target is the key to form a stable and controllable free surface, as well as the outlet with an arc transition. The optimization parameter of the target design, in which the radius of outlet cross section is $60{\pm}1mm$, is verified to form a stable and controllable free surface and to reduce the formation of air bubbles. This work can function as a reference for carrying out engineering design of windowless target and for verification experiments.

        Influence of FeSe doping on superconducting properties of MgB2 by hybrid microwave method

        The effect of FeSe doping on the physical properties of MgB2 is studied. Bulk samples of the FeSe doped MgB2 with weight ratio x ðFeSe : MgB2Þ ¼ 0%; 3%; 7% and 10% were prepared by hybrid microwave method. It is proved that FeSe is not stable together with MgB2. Fe2þ enters into MgB2 lattice, some Mg2þ and Se2『 are combined into the new impurity compound MgSe. The superconducting transition temperature (Tc) slightly decreased with increasing doping content of FeSe from R-T and M-T curves, which results from the substitution of Mg2þ by Fe2þ in the MgB2 lattice. The Jc increase slightly with the FeSe doping content increasing from 3 wt % to 10 wt %, which results from the increasing MgSe impurity pinning centers.

      • Susceptibility Loci Associations with Prostate Cancer Risk in Northern Chinese Men

        Background: KLK3 gene products, like human prostate-specific antigen (PSA), are important biomarkers in the clinical diagnosis of prostate cancer (PCa). G protein-coupled receptor RFX6, C2orf43 and FOXP4 signaling plays important roles in the development of PCa. However, associations of these genes with PCa in northern Chinese men remain to be detailed. This study aimed to investigate their impact on occurrence and level of malignancy. Methods: All subjects were from Beijing and Tianjin, including 266 cases with prostate cancer and 288 normal individuals as controls. We evaluated associations between clinical covariates (age at diagnosis, prostate specific antigen, Gleason score, tumor stage and aggressive) and 6 candidate PCa risk loci, genotyped by PCR- high resolution melting curve and sequencing methods. Results: Case-control analysis of allelic frequency of PCa associated with PCa showed that one of the 6 candidate risk loci, rs339331 in the RFX6 gene, was associated with reduced risk of prostate cancer (odds ratio (OR) = 0.73, 95% confidence interval (CI) =0.57-0.94, P = 0.013) in northern Chinese men. In addition, subjects with CX (CC+TC) genotypes had a decreased risk for prostrate cancer compared to those carrying the TT homozygote (OR =0.64, 95% CI = 0.45- 0.90, P = 0.008). The TT genotype of 13q22 (rs9600079, T) was associated with tumor stage (P=0.044, OR=2.34, 95% CI=0.94-5.87). Other SNPs were not significantly associated with clinical covariates in prostate cancer (P > 0.05). Conclusions. rs339331 in the RFX6 gene may be associated with prostate cancer as a susceptibility locus in northern Chinese men.

      • The <i>Plasmodium vivax</i> Merozoite Surface Protein 1 Paralog Is a Novel Erythrocyte-Binding Ligand of <i>P. vivax</i>

        <P>Merozoite surface protein 1 of <I>Plasmodium vivax</I> (PvMSP1), a glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchored protein (GPI-AP), is a malaria vaccine candidate for <I>P. vivax</I>. The paralog of PvMSP1, named <I>P. vivax</I> merozoite surface protein 1 paralog (PvMSP1P; PlasmoDB PVX_099975), was recently identified and predicted as a GPI-AP. The similarities in genetic structural characteristics between PvMSP1 and PvMSP1P (e.g., size of open reading frames, two epidermal growth factor-like domains, and GPI anchor motif in the C terminus) led us to study this protein. In the present study, different regions of the PvMSP1P protein, demarcated based on the processed forms of PvMSP1, were expressed successfully as recombinant proteins [i.e., 83 (A, B, and C), 30, 38, 42, 33, and 19 fragments]. We studied the naturally acquired immune response against each fragment of recombinant PvMSP1P and the potential ability of each fragment to bind erythrocytes. The N-terminal fragment (83A) and two C-terminal fragments (33 and 19) reacted strongly with sera from <I>P. vivax</I>-infected patients, with 50 to 68% sensitivity and 95 to 96% specificity, respectively. Due to colocalization of PvMSP1P with PvMSP1, we supposed that PvMSP1P plays a similar role as PvMSP1 during erythrocyte invasion. An <I>in vitro</I> cytoadherence assay showed that PvMSP1P, especially the 19-kDa C-terminal region, could bind to erythrocytes. We also found that human sera from populations naturally exposed to vivax malaria and antisera obtained by immunization using the recombinant molecule PvMSP1P-19 inhibited <I>in vitro</I> binding of human erythrocytes to PvMSP1P-19. These results provide further evidence that the PvMSP1P might be an essential parasite adhesion molecule in the <I>P. vivax</I> merozoite and is a potential vaccine candidate against <I>P. vivax</I>.</P>

        Evolving Relations across the Taiwan Strait

          For the last few months, the relations across the Taiwan Strait seem to most of the countries in this region that the d tente of the relation is just at the corner. According to the "1992 Consensus," the principle on "finding commonalities despite differences" has been taken by political leaders on either side of the Taiwan Strait to create a win-win resolution. If the cross-strait relations gradually and smoothly progress, it is helpful to stabilize the regional stability and to promote the prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region. But, it is highly based on hypothesis to resolve the Taiwan Strait issues peacefully in a short time of period. To precisely read the cross-strait relations, the current development in the last few months is not good enough to interpret its implications. Then, the fundamental characteristics of the relation across the Taiwan Strait are needed to be profoundly studied in different perspectives based on different issues such as sovereignty, political systems, military and comprehensive security, economics, cultures, societies, and ... etc. According to the principles of "finding commonalities despite differences," the economic cooperation seems to be continued. The other key disputes across the Strait may cause interactive effects among themselves. If any incident caused by either internal or external factors happened across the Strait may trigger misunderstanding or miscalculation, the cross-strait relations are highly possible to be damaged. Therefore, it could be concluded that the currently comprehensively developing relation across the Taiwan Strait is fragile.   지난 몇 개월 동안 대만해협을 사이에 두고 중국과 대만 간에는 긴장완화가 임박한 것으로 여겨졌다. 1992년 양측 간 합의한 “9.2공동인식(1992 Consensus)”에 따라 양측의 정치지도자들은 상호 이익에 부합되는 해결책을 찾기 위해 서로 다르지만 공통점을 찾는 원칙을 추구해 왔다. 양반관계가 점점 우호적으로 진전된다면, 이것이 이 지역의 안정을 공고히 하고 아시아태평양 지역의 번영을 증진시키는데 도움이 될 것이다. 물론 양안관계를 단기간에 평화적으로 해결한다는 것에는 여러 조건들이 필요하다. 지난 몇 개월 동안의 진전으로 양안 관계의 문제가 충분히 해결된다고 보지는 않는다. 양반관계의 근본적인 성격을 알기위해서는 주권, 정치체제, 군사 안보 경제, 사회, 문화 등의 여러 문제에 기초한 다각적인 접근이 심도 있게 연구되어야 한다. 대만과 중국이 서로 다르지만 하나의 공통점을 찾으려는 원칙과 노력으로 양안 경제협력은 계속되고 있다. 한편, 양측 간에는 다른 문제로 상호 분쟁이 유발될 수도 있다. 국내 혹은 대외적인 요인에 의해 유발된 사건이 상호 오해를 불러일으킬 수 있고 이로 인해 양안관계가 훼손될 가능성도 있다. 이런 측면에서는 현재 양안관계가 그렇게 단단하다고는 볼 수 없는 것이다.

        Study of PD Location in Generators by PD Pulses Propagation

        When a partial discharge takes place at the stator of a generator, the electrical pulse will propagate along the stator bars and the capacitor chains formed by the end part of the stator winds. On the first path, the pulse propagates as a travel wave at slow speed. On the second path, the pulse propagates at quick speed. Based on the data of the experiments on a real 50 MW steam generator, the author has found the pulses can propagate by magnetic field of the stator winding. It was studied that how to locating the partial discharge by signals coming from the different paths, including the features of signals on the two paths at time domain and frequency domain, the measurement frequency rang of the signals, the blind area, the advantage and disadvantage of this method.
