There was no difference between the designer and the user of gardens in Choson Dynasty. And the gardens were cultivated by the scholars in the time, called 'Sunbi(士)'. The studies of gardens of Choson Dynasty have, these days, been concentrated on just physical parts and existing data on them. So, there is a lack of understanding the background of garden constructions and their designers. This study focuses on the designers of the gardens. In addition, since most of designers were the scholars, we are also concerned with their culture. The areas for case study are Yun Seun-do's Buyongdong garden, Yang San-bo's Soseawon, Song Si-yeul's Namganjungsa, and Jung Yag-yong's Dasanchodang. These four gardens are representatives of the villa gardens of Chosen Dynasty that reflect Sunbi culture. We studied how Sunbis' lives were reflected on every corners of the gardens. The result of the study is to show how harmoniously spaces and physical parts in each gardens match with four categories of spritual values(a view of nature, a moral sense, scholastic pursuit, and a life of leisure) that constitute the cores of Sunbi culture.
조선중기 영남사림(士林)의 원림조영 특성에 관한 연구 : 16~17세기 퇴계학파를 중심으로

Byolseo(Retreating Villa) Landscape Gardens built by the Sarim(Neo-Confucian Literati) in the middle Chosun era(16~17c) were constructed under the syntactic principles of Sung Confucianism. Especially those ones led by the Youngnam Teogye-School have some differences from those of other regions in the design language of the garden. But the previous studies on Byolseo Landscape Gardens cannot explain the microscopic characteristics, especially the periodic and regional differences. So this study is focused on the unique characteristics of Teogye-School moralists' landscape gardens. We investigated the typological characteristics of gardens including Teogye Lee's Dosanseodang and other 13 gardens of his followers in terms of design languages(patterns of location, spatial compositions and compositional elements of garden, architectural characteristics, techniques of landscape presentation). As a result of this study, it is confirmed that Teogye-School's gardens were built for their mental training and pursuing personal completion as well. But they have some authentic features different from the other region's in the garden compositions, elements, and the methods of presentation of design intentions by means of symbolized and personalized space of moral philosophy'.
A Method for Selecting Recreation Reservoirs

This research was conducted to present the methods for identifying indicators to assess development potential for recreational reservoir watersheds in Korea. Data were collected from environmental planners including landscape architects and urban planners. By analyzing the collected data with importance analysis of indicators and factor analysis, ten measurable recreational development potential indicators(RDPI) were presented. The recreational development potential of each reservoir was calculated by multiplying the score of the ten indicators of each reservoir, transformed to Z-Score, by a weight score of each indicator, thereafter adding up all the values generated. The reliability of the RDPI developed in this research was demonstrated by its high correlation with the development potential of each reservoir assessed by experts in environmental planning(Spearman’s ρ= 0.73, p< .01). In order to develop the RDPI generally applicable to reservoirs and their watersheds in this research, qualitative indicators were converted into measurable ones, the authors’subjective judgment was prevented by reflecting the view of planning specialists as most as possible in determining indicators and AHP was used for calculating the score of weight of each indicator.
