Farm animals such as piglets are often affected by environmental stress, which can disturb the gut ecosystem. Antibiotics were commonly used to prevent diarrhea in weaned piglets, but this was banned by the European Union due to the development of antibiotic resistance. However, the use of probiotics instead of antibiotics may reduce the risk posed by pathogenic microorganisms and reduce the incidence of gastrointestinal diseases. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the effects of Lactobacillus casei Zhang on the mechanical barrier and immune function of early-weaned piglets infected using Escherichia coli K88 based on histomorphology and immunology. Fourteen-day-old weaned piglets were divided into a control group and experimental groups that were fed L. casei Zhang and infected with E. coli K88 with or without prefeeding and/or postfeeding of L. casei Zhang. The L. casei Zhang dose used was 107 CFU/g diet. Jejunum segments were obtained before histological, immunohistochemical, and western blot analyses were performed. In addition, the relative mRNA expression of toll receptors and cytokines was measured. Piglets fed L. casei Zhang showed significantly increased jejunum villus height, villus height-crypt depth ratio, muscle thickness, and expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen and tight junction proteins ZO-1 and occludin. The use of L. casei Zhang effectively reduced intestinal inflammation after infection. We found that L. casei Zhang feeding prevented the jejunum damage induced by E. coli K88, suggesting that it may be a potential alternative to antibiotics for preventing diarrhea in early-weaned piglets.

The molecular genetic diversity of 404 indigenous landraces from sesame core collection in China were evaluated by 11SRAP and 3 SSR markers, 175 fragments were generated, of which 126 were polymorphic with an average polymorphism rate of 72%. Jaccard’s genetic similarity coefficients (GS=0.7130), Nei's gene diversity (h=0.2418) and Shannon's Information index (I=0.3847) were calculated, a dendrogram of the 404 landraces was made, landraces from various zones were distributed throughout the dendrogram, accessions from different agro‐ecological zones were indistinguishable by cluster analysis, geographical separation did not generally result in greater genetic distance, a similar pattern was obtained using principal coordinates (PCO) analysis. As to seven agro‐ecological zones, the maximum Nei’s gene diversity (h = 0.2613)and Shannon index (I = 0.3980) values in zone VII indicated that they were genetically more diverse than those in other zones, while the least genetically diverse region was zone III (h = 0.1772, I = 0.2858). Nei's genetic identity and genetic distance among landraces from seven agro‐ecological zones were also analyzed, the genetic relationship of seven zones was inferred using the UPGMA method. This study demonstrated that SRAP and SSR markers were appropriate for evaluation of sesame genetic diversities. There existed extensive genetic diverse among indigenous landraces and the abundance of genetic diversity of landraces in different agro‐ecological zones was various. Understanding of these characteristics of indigenous landraces in China can provide theoretical foundation for further collection, effective protection and reasonable utilization of these sesame landraces in breeding.

This article focuses on the study of the buckling behavior of two-dimensional functionally graded (2D-FG) nanosize tubes, including porosity, based on the first shear deformation and higher-order theory of the tube. The nano-scale tube is simulated using the nonlocal gradient strain theory, and the general equations and boundary conditions are derived using Hamilton’s principle for the Zhang-Fu’s tube model (as a higher-order theory) and Timoshenko beam theory. Finally, the derived equations are solved using a numerical method for both simply-supported and clamped boundary conditions. A parametric study is performed to investigate the effects of different parameters, such as axial and radial FG power indices, porosity parameter, and nonlocal gradient strain parameters, on the buckling behavior of the bi-dimensional functionally graded porous tube. As the storage capacity of a computer system is rapidly increasing and the cost of computer hardware is decreasing continuously, users can easily manage multimedia data on the personal computer. Especially, various image view programs are widely used to manage image files at the present time. However, since most of these programs do not use a database management system(DBMS), it is very difficult for users to use them efficiently. In this paper, we designed and implemented a Digital Album by using an object-relational database management system, called PARODY(Persistent, Almost, Relational Object Database sYstem) that implements a persistent object database with a relatively simple interface to its C++ class library. Since PARODY is used as a data storage manager of the Digital Album, users can manage(i.e., insert, update, and delete) an image database and search for the required image data from the image database easily. In addition, we use OWL(Object Windows Library) of Borland C++ to implement the user interface of the Digital Album efficiently.

A new ent-kaurane type diterpenoid glycoside, 17-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-16α-ent-kauran-19-oic acid (1), together with 17-hydroxy-16α-ent-kauran-19-oic acid (2), 16α,17-dihydroxyl-ent-kauran-19-oic acid (3), and 16α-hydroxy-17-acetoxy-ent- kauran-19-oic acid (4) were isolated from the aerial parts of Inula japonica Thunb. The structure of 1 was determined mainly by use of 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic techniques including HSQC, 1H-1H COSY, HMBC, and NOESY. In addition, 4 exhibited significant inhibitory activity on NO production in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells with IC50 value of 14.3 μg/mL.

In rain-fed semi-arid agricultural areas, unevenly distributed seasonal rainfall influences tomato production. Meanwhile, jasmonic acid, an essential plant hormone, enhances plant resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses; however, its effect on tomato drought resistance remains unclear. In this study, a series of pot experiments were conducted to investigate the effects elicited via addition of exogenous methyl jasmonate (MeJA), an active ingredient of jasmonic acid, on tomato physiology, biochemistry, and transcription under two water conditions. The results indicate that 100 μM MeJA application significantly improved drought resistance in tomato and increased the biomass. Moreover, water deficiency significantly decreased the tomato plant photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and root exudation and increased the leaf abscisic acid (ABA) con- tent. Meanwhile, MeJA application increased root exudation and whole plant transpiration rate to maintain relatively high leaf water content. In leaves, specifically, MeJA increased the expression of carotenoid cleavage dioxygenases and reduced ABA content, which might contribute to the maintenance of a high stomatal conductance. In addition, many genes involved in photosynthetic carbon metabolism and sugar transport were upregulated by MeJA, resulting in a low soluble sugar-to- starch ratio, to maintain plant growth. Collectively, these findings indicate that exogenous MeJA decreases ABA content to maintain high stomatal conductance and enhance root water uptake capacity to maintain improved leaf relative water status, consequently improving tomato drought resistance.

Two monomers including 4,4′,4″-tris(3-methoxythiophene-2-yl)triphenylamine (M1) and 4,4′,4″-tris(3,4-dimethoxythiophene-2-yl)triphenylamine (M2) with triphenylamine as their core were synthesized and the corresponding polymers were obtained by electrochemical polymerization. Their electrochemical properties were investigated using scanning electron microscopy, UV–Vis, and cyclic voltammetry. It was found that the two polymers had reversible redox behavior with the different color change under the applied potentials. Both the polymers displayed high switching efficiency and optical contrast. Moreover, the corresponding electrochromic devices (ECDs) employing the synthesized polymers and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) were constructed. The spectroelectrochemical experiments illustrated that the ECDs exhibited fast response time, reasonable optical contrast, favorable optical memories, and redox stability.

Our recent report indicated that the crude extract from stem bark of Erythrina variegata L. (Leguminosae) (EV) exerted beneficial effects against osteoporosis induced by estrogen deficiency in vivo. Followup phytochemical study has isolated genistein-derivatives mainly in the form of prenylgenistein from this extract, including 6-prenylgenistein, 8-prenylgenistein, and 6, 8-diprenylgenistein. The present study was performed to investigate the structure-function relationship of these compounds on osteoblastic proliferation, differentiation and mineralization in UMR 106 cells. Our results showed that genistein did not stimulate cell growth while 8-prenylgenistein promoted cell growth significantly by 10$\sim$23%. In contrast, the treatment by 6-prenylgenistein for 48 h reduced UMR 106 cell proliferation when compared to cells treated with genistein. The proliferation of 6,8-diprenylgenistein-treated cells was greater than those treated by 6-prenylgenistein at all testing concentrations. For ALP activity, significant increase was found in cells treated by either 8-prenylgenistein or 6,8-diprenylgenistein for 48 h at the concentration of $10^{-10}M$. In mineralization study, the content of Ca and P in extracellular matrix were significantly increased in 8-prenylgenistein treated cells. The results showed that genistein derivatives isolated from EV demonstrated stimulatory effects on osteogenesis in UMR 106 cells. Based on the study of structure-activity relationship, it appears that prenylation at C-8, but not at C-6, could increase the bone-protective effect of genistein.
