        Mechanism of gastrointestinal adaptability and antioxidant function of infant-derived Lactobacillus plantarum BF_15 through genomics

        Lactobacillus plantarum is an essential probiotic in the human gastrointestinal tract. L. plantarum BF_15, a functional probiotic isolated from the feces of breast-fed infants, has been reported in many in vitro and in vivo studies with strong gastrointestinal adaptability and outstanding anti-oxidative activities. Therefore, the whole genome of L. plantarum BF_15 was sequenced. Several genes, encoding the gastrointestinal adaptability-related proteins, were identified, including genes related to gastrointestinal environment-induced stress resistance, adhesive performance, and ability to transport and metabolize resistant starch and oligosaccharides. Genes related to alleviating oxidative stress were also found. Further functional verification was carried out by RT-qPCR on the 10 and 12 key adhesion and antioxidant genes. Overall, this study might provide a critical basis for L. plantarum BF_15 as a potential candidate for probiotics.

        Expectation-maximization Estimation Algorithm for Bilinear State-space Systems with Missing Outputs Using Kalman Smoother

        In this paper, the parameter estimation of bilinear state-space systems with missing outputs is studied. The bilinear model is transformed into a linear time-varying state-space model, and Kalman smoother with a timevarying gain is adopted to estimate missing outputs and unmeasurable states. Under the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm scheme, an iterative estimation algorithm based on Kalman smoother is derived, in which the unknown parameters, missing outputs, and unmeasurable states can be estimated simultaneously. Two simulation examples, including a numerical example and a three-tank system experiment, are adopted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

      • A Comparative Analysis of English Abstracts Translated by Chinese Scholars and Machine Translation Systems

        This paper reports the results of a study to identify the corpus-based differences between Chinese English writings and their corresponding machine translation systems, such as ChatGPT and Google Translate. We randomly selected 100 English abstracts written by Chinese scholars and machine translation systems, respectively. These abstracts are analysed using 10 text analysis measures with Coh-Metrix 3.0 in terms of lexical diversity, syntactic complexity, readability and cohesion. Data analysis revealed that, firstly, all text measures showed significant differences between human writing and ChatGPT and Google Translate translated texts, with the exception of cohesion. Secondly, the analyses revealed the discrepancy between the productions of different machine translation systems. This study contributes to a better understanding of machine translation systems and has important implications for pedagogy and assessment in this field.

        Surface oxidation of PAN‑based ultrahigh modulus carbon fibers (UHMCFs) and its effect on the properties of UHMCF/EP composites

        In this study, nitric acid oxidation with varied treatment temperature and time was conducted on the surfaces of polyacrylonitrile- based ultrahigh modulus carbon fibers. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and surface tension/dynamic contact angle instruments were used to investigate changes in surface topography and chemical functionality before and after surface treatment. Results showed that the nitric acid oxidation of ultrahigh modulus carbon fibers resulted in decreases in the values of the crystallite thickness Lc and graphitization degree. Meanwhile, increased treating temperature and time made the decreases more obviously. The surfaces of ultrahigh modulus carbon fibers became much more activity and functionality after surface oxidation, e.g., the total surface energy of oxidized samples at 80 °C for 1 h increased by 27.7% compared with untreated fibers. Effects of surface nitric acid oxidation on the mechanical properties of ultrahigh modulus carbon fibers and its reinforced epoxy composites were also researched. Significant decreases happened to the tensile modulus of fibers due to decreased Lc value after the nitric acid oxidation. However, surface treatment had little effect on the tensile strength even as the treating temperature and processing time increased. The highest interfacial shear strength of ultrahigh modulus carbon fibers/epoxy composites increased by 25.7% after the nitric acid oxidation. In the final, surface oxidative mechanism of ultrahigh modulus carbon fibers in the nitric acid oxidation was studied. Different trends of the tensile strength and tensile modulus of fibers in the nitric acid oxidation resulted from the typical skin–core structure.

        A Comparative Analysis of Syntactic Complexity between Scholars and AI-based Machine Translation Systems

        This study investigates the syntactic complexity in English prose between the writings of Chinese scholars and the corresponding translations generated by AI-based machine translation systems. A corpus of 100 English abstracts written by Chinese scholars and 300 English abstracts translated by ChatGPT 4.0, Google Bard and Microsoft Bing was constructed. These texts were analysed using 14 measures of syntactic complexity as defined by the L2 Syntactic Complexity Analyzer (Lu, 2010). The analysis revealed that when comparing the original Chinese-English texts with the outputs of machine translation systems, significant differences were found in 13 of the 14 syntactic measures. Conversely, when comparing the translations from ChatGPT 4.0, Bard and Bing, significant differences were found in 10 of the 14 measures. This research advances the understanding of machine translation systems and has relevant implications for pedagogy and assessment in the field.

        Iron diffusion-doped magnesium-aluminum layered double oxides as a multifunctional adsorbent for removal of F-, Sb(III) and methyl orange contaminants from water

        Due to the complexity of the contaminations in wastewater, a universal adsorbent that takes many sorts of pollutant is desired. A multi-functioning magnetic Fe3O4-cored magnesium-aluminum layered double oxide (Fe3O4@LDO) composite was prepared and employed as an adsorbent for removing F-, Sb(III) and MO from water, respectively, which are three typical contaminants with different molecule sizes as water contamination. The effect of pH contact time and initial concentrations of pollutants on the removal rates of each contaminant were investigated. Fe3O4@LDO composite showed excellent adsorption performance for all of the three molecules F-, Sb(III) and MO, and their maximum adsorption capacities are as high as 258, 391, and 506mg/g, respectively. The adsorption process of F-, Sb(III) and MO on Fe3O4@LDO fitted well to Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption mechanisms of F-, Sb(III) and MO on Fe3O4@LDO were investigated. We discovered that iron ions diffused from Fe3O4 nanospheres contributed to the good performance of the absorbent.

        한국과 중국의 웨딩메이크업 이미지 비교분석 연구 -2020년도를 중심으로-

        The wedding culture of the present society in the 21st century is becoming more and more glocalized due to the progress in digital technologies and the resultant information exchange, while it also demands pursuit differentiation as the characteristics of the uniqueness and changes in the forms of weddings. Of these, wedding makeup is now recognized as a critical factor to determine the image of the bride. As a result of the increased information exchange through the media of South Korea, it is assumed that the wedding culture and wedding makeup in China match with the trends in South Korea, and there is a need to examine the current status of this aspect. For this, the researcher intends to analyze the wedding makeup images of South Korea and China, focusing on wedding magazines. For the theoretical study, the researcher reviewed preceding studies and books. And, for the empirical study, the only wedding magazine in South Korea, Wedding 21, and its Chinese counterpart, COSMOBride, were used as the study material. As for the classification of the photo images, five makeup majors were put to analyze the images. As a result, it was shown that the classic images in China had more vivid and splendid makeup. However, apart from this difference, the differences between natural images, romantic images, and elegant images were not significant. As such, the analysis result showing that the features in each image in the wedding magazines of the two countries were the same indicates that China is still under the influence of the Korean Wave as of 2020. It is expected that the findings of this study can be used as the basic data for the trends of wedding makeups and the types of wedding makeup images in South Korea and China.

        The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the severe acute respiratorysyndrome coronavirus 2 has rapidly spread globally. Cancer patients are at a higher risk ofbeing infected with the coronavirus and are more likely to develop severe complications, ascompared to the general population. The increasing spread of COVID-19 presents challengesfor the clinical care of patients with gynecological malignancies. Concerted efforts should beput into managing gynecological malignancies in an orderly manner by strictly implementingthe measures that are specifically developed for controlling the spread of COVID-19. We havedrafted Recommendations on Management of Gynecological Malignancies during the COVID-19 Pandemicbased on our experience on controlling COVID-19 pandemic in China. We recommendthat patients with gynecological malignancies should be managed in hierarchical andindividualized manners in combination with local conditions related to COVID-19. Medicalcare decision should be balanced between controlling COVID-19 pandemic spread and timelydiagnosis and treatment for gynecologic oncology patients.
