Technology Innovation, Human Capital and R&D Effects on Economic Growth

This paper analyzes the economic effects of the S&T Innovation, R&D, human resources and investment on the economic growth using 18 countries. We have obtained the somewhat mixed results on the existence of unit root roots in variables. While most of Pedroni cointegration tests show that there are no panel cointegration among the variables, Kao cointegration test shows that there is the panel cointegration among the variables such as GDP, human capital, R&D investment and patent. Kao cointegration test result shows that human capital, R&D investment, patent economic growth seem to have the panel cointegration or the long-run relationship among them as a whole. The estimation results of individual OLS and panel estimation show that the human capital, R&D investment and technology innovation or patent had positively significant effects on economic growth or GDP.
천연광물을 이용한 고결정성 제올라이트의 합성과 중금속 흡착 특성

다양한 산업생산 활동의 과정에서 수계로 배출되는 중금속은 먹이사슬을 통해 연쇄 축적되거나 직접적으로 인체 내로 흡수될 경우 강한 지속성으로 인해 다양한 장해를 유발할 수 있다. 이러한 위해성 중금속 제거를 위해 흡착제를 이용한 공정 및 소재 연구가 국내외에서 활발히 진행되고 있다. 흡착제로 상용되는 합성 제올라이트는 세공구조가 다양하고 효능이 우수한 반면에 경제성이 다소 떨어지는 단점이 있기 때문에 경제성 및 친환경적 요소를 고려하여 각종 폐기물 및 천연광물을 활성탄이나 제올라이트로 합성하여 사용하는 경우가 많다. 본 연구에서는 경남 합천군에서 산출된 카올린(kaolin)에 용융/수열합성법을 적용하여 Na-A형 제올라이트로 합성하고, 연속식 및 회분식 흡착실험을 통하여 흡착제로써의 특성과 효율을 평가하였다. Si/Al비가 1에 가깝고 저비용 원료인 kaolin을 원물질로 설정하고 NaOH 첨가량을 달리하여 NaOH/kaolin비 0.6-1.2 범위에서 합성을 실시하였다. NaOH 첨가량이 증가할수록 합성된 Na-A형 제올라이트의 입자크기는 감소하는 경향을 보였으며, NaOH/kaolin비가 1.2일 때 평균 입자크기는 0.83 μm, 결정화도는 80% 이상으로 나타났다. 이는 동일 조건에서 국외 천연광물(kaolin, illite)로 합성된 제올라이트 물질들에 비해 더 높은 합성 효율을 가지는 것으로 판단된다. 다음으로 합성된 Na-A형 제올라이트의 Cu, Cd 이온에 대한 흡착 성능을 평가하였다. Cu, Cd 이온의 초기농도는 100 mg/L, 제올라이트 투여량은 1 g/L로 설정하여 연속식 흡착실험을 실시한 결과, 대부분이 120-180분 내에 평형에 도달하였으며 Cu 이온에 대한 평형흡착량은 66.22-93.97 mg/g, Cd 이온에 대한 평형흡착량은 98.06-98.38 mg/g으로 산정되었다. 한편, 100-500 mg/L의 다양한 Cu, Cd 이온 초기농도와 제올라이트 투여량 1 g/L 조건에서 실시한 회분식 흡착실험 결과, Cu 이온에 대한 최대흡착량은 89.2-95.55 mg/g, Cd 이온에 대한 최대흡착량은 98.05-98.43 mg/g으로 산정되었다. 합성된 Na-A형 제올라이트의 결정화도에 따라 Cu와 Cd 이온의 평형흡착량 및 최대흡착량이 증가하는 경향을 보였으며, 선행연구들과 비교하였을 때 동일 초기농도 및 흡착제 투여량 대비 매우 높은 흡착 성능을 나타내었다.
Analysis of monitoring Road-kill in Odaesan National Park

We surveyed mammalian roadkill at the National Route 6 (Jin-gogae to Songcheon, 18㎞) and a local road 446 (Odaesan National Park office to Sangwon-temple, 12㎞) in Odaesan National Park. Data of the surveys were analyzed by year, month, and species. Roadkills of 226 individuals were found at the survey areas. Of them, the road-killed 131 mammal individuals, 44 bird individuals, 40 reptile individual and 11 amphibian individuals were found during the survey period. High ratio of the road-kills was observed in mammals than the other animals. Among mammalian species, high ratio of the road-kills was observed in squirrels. There were road-kills of three endangered species, containing otters, yellow-throated marten and leopard cats. According to the analyses of annual road-kills, roadkills of 104 cases were occurred and highly frequent in 2014, following by roadkills of 81 cases in 2015, and then those of 41 cases in 2016. Most ases of the roadkills occurred in summer (June to September). The results will contribute to establishing management for reduction of roadkill in Odaesan National Park.

<P><B>Background</B></P> <P>Multiple myeloma (MM) is a plasma cell dyscrasia characterized by the presence of a clonal proliferation of tumor cells. Cutaneous involvement of MM is very rare and remains poorly understood.</P> <P><B>Objective</B></P> <P>The aim of this study was to examine the clinical and histopathologic characteristics of cutaneous involvement in MM and identify factors associated with overall survival of MM with cutaneous involvement.</P> <P><B>Methods</B></P> <P>The medical records of 1228 patients with MM were retrieved and analyzed. Of those patients, 14 with cutaneous involvement of MM (1.14%) were further evaluated for their clinical and histopathologic findings.</P> <P><B>Results</B></P> <P>Patients with cutaneous involvement showed significantly reduced overall survival compared with those without cutaneous involvement (median, 28 vs. 57 months; hazard ratio, 1.929; 95% confidence interval, 1.030-3.613). In subgroup analyses of patients with MM with cutaneous involvement, erythematous nodules (<I>P</I> = .004), multiple cutaneous lesions (<I>P</I> = .002), and absence of a grenz zone (<I>P</I> = .004) were clinicopathologic features associated with reduced overall survival after Bonferroni correction.</P> <P><B>Limitations</B></P> <P>The retrospective design and the small sample size are the limitations.</P> <P><B>Conclusion</B></P> <P>Cutaneous involvement accounted for about 1.14% of patients with MM and was associated with reduced overall survival.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>A sensitive and specific swarm primer-based reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification (sRT-LAMP) assay for the detection of serotype O foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) was developed and evaluated. The assay specifically amplified the <I>VP3</I> gene of serotype O FMDV, but did not amplify the <I>VP3</I> gene of other serotype FMDVs or any other viruses. The limit of detection of the assay was 10<SUP>2</SUP> TCID<SUB>50</SUB>/mL or 10<SUP>3</SUP> RNA copies/μL, which is 100 times lower than that of the RT-LAMP assay without swarm primers. The new assay is 10 times more sensitive than reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and is comparable to the sensitivity of real time RT-PCR (qRT-PCR). Evaluation of the assay using different serotypes of FMDV strains showed 100% agreement with the RT-PCR results. The previously reported serotype O FMDV-specific RT-LAMP assay did not detect 20 out of 22 strains of serotype O FMDVs, probably due to multiple mismatches between the primer and template sequences, showing that it is not suitable for detecting the serotype O FMDVs circulating in Pool 1 region countries, including Korea. In contrast, the developed sRT-LAMP assay with improved primers can rapidly and accurately diagnose serotype O FMDVs circulating in Pool 1 region countries and will be a useful alternative to RT-PCR and qRT-PCR.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> A swarm primer-applied RT-LAMP assay was developed for the detection of serotype O FMDV. </LI> <LI> The assay was 10 times more sensitive than RT-PCR and comparable to the sensitivity of qRT-PCR. </LI> <LI> The swarm primer RT-LAMP assay showed 100% agreement with conventional RT-PCR. </LI> </UL> </P>
Rosacea: Molecular Mechanisms and Management of a Chronic Cutaneous Inflammatory Condition

<P>Rosacea is a chronic cutaneous inflammatory disease that affects the facial skin. Clinically, rosacea can be categorized into papulopustular, erythematotelangiectatic, ocular, and phymatous rosacea. However, the phenotypic presentations of rosacea are more heterogeneous. Although the pathophysiology of rosacea remains to be elucidated, immunologic alterations and neurovascular dysregulation are thought to have important roles in initiating and strengthening the clinical manifestations of rosacea. In this article, we present the possible molecular mechanisms of rosacea based on recent laboratory and clinical studies. We describe the genetic predisposition for rosacea along with its associated diseases, triggering factors, and suggested management options in detail based on the underlying molecular biology. Understanding the molecular pathomechanisms of rosacea will likely aid toward better comprehending its complex pathogenesis.</P>
