We report on the applicability oj a method recently developed in our laboratory for measuring the antioxidant potential of isolated chemicals and extracts derived from natural products. Peroxyl radicals generated by thermal homolysis of 2,2'-azobis-amidinopropane (ABAP) oxidize $\alpha$-keto-${\gamma}$-methiolbutyric acid (KMBA) to ethylene, which is monitored by gas chromatography. Inhibition of ethylene formation in the presence of antioxidants that compete with KMBA for peroxyl radicals is the basis of the Total Oxyradical Scavenging Capacity Assay (TOSCA; Winston et al., 1998). Antioxidative activities of water-soluble extracts of American green tea, the anti-hepatotoxic flavonolignan from milk thistle (Silybum marianum) silybin, Ginkgo biloba extract EGb 761, and a series of naturally occuring sesquiterpene lactones (all ger-macranolides found in in fungi, liverworts, and plants) were studied. The specific TOSC value per $\mu$M silybin was 5.2, which is essentially comparable to that of Trolo $x^{ⓡ}$, a water-soluble vitamine E analog. Tea and Ginkgo extracts exhibited potent peroxyl radical scavenging capacity with values, respectively of =1700 and 1000 $\mu$mols Trolo $x^{ⓡ}$ equivalent per gram dry matter. The known anti-inflammatory activity of some germacranolides prompted study of their antioxidant capacity. None of the lactones exhibited antioxidant capacity toward peroxyl radicals comparable to Trolo $x^{ⓡ}$; costunilide, the most lipophilic, had a TOSC value = to glutathione. The potential role of peroxyl radicals in lipidperoxidation, other cellular damage, and var-ious disease states suggest a possible preventive role for silybin, green tea and Ginkgo biloba in oxidative stress caused by these free radical species.ecies.

The thrust of the study was to determine the extent to which sources of efficacy predicted and explained early childhood preservice teachers’ self-efficacy in Ghana. The study employed a survey design that selected 164 regular final year student teachers pursuing a Bachelor of Education degree in Early Childhood Education in two public universities in Ghana. The teacher self-efficacy scale and the sources of efficacy scale consisting of 60 items were used to gather data. Data was analysed using means and standard multiple regression. The study revealed that student teachers have high self- efficacy. Their self-efficacy beliefs is significantly predicted by the overall sources of efficacy. Specifically, mastery experiences significantly predicted preservice teachers self efficacy. When the effect of the various sources of self efficacy of the preservice teachers’ self-efficacy was explored separately, it came to light that vicarious experiences predicted preservice early childhood educators’ self-efficacy in engaging learners and using instructional strategies while enactive mastery experiences predicted their self-efficacy in managing classrooms and involving parents in their children’s education. It was recommended among others that pre internship, internship and post internship seminars should be well structured for students to have enough practice sessions and observations; there should be regular supervision from lecturers and post teaching conferences to provide appropriate feedback to build student teachers’ confidence and self-efficacy.

DC motors are widely used in industries like cement, paper manufacturing, etc., even today. Early fault identification in dc motors significantly improves its life time and reduces power consumption. Many conventional and soft computing techniques for fault identification in DC motors including a recent work using model based analysis with the help of fuzzy logic are available in literature. In this paper fuzzy logic and norm based wavelet analysis of startup transient current are proposed to identify and quantify the armature winding fault and bearing fault in DC motors, respectively. Results obtained by simulation using Matlab and Simulink are presented in this paper to validate the proposed work.
Evidence on the Sectoral Monetary Transmission Process Under a Fixed Exchange Rate Regime

Traditional macroeconomic models suggest that monetary policy changes are largely ineffective in fixed exchange rate economies. However, Edwards and Végh (1997) present a model that shows this might not be the case, as a tightening in monetary policy raises financial costs faced by firms and therefore lowers real wages and by extension consumption. This paper empirically tests this hypothesis using data on a country with one of the longest running fixed exchange rate regimes (1975-present). The results of the study confirm the theoretical predictions of Edwards and Végh, but they also show that the propagation of nominal shocks in fixed exchange rate systems is comparatively slower than in countries with a more flexible exchange rate regime.
