Steel Bridge Construction of Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge

        Wen-bo Gao,Quan-ke Su,Jin-wen Zhang,Hong-bing Xie,Feng Wen,Fang Li,Ji-zhu Liu 한국강구조학회 2020 International Journal of Steel Structures Vol.20 No.5

The 55-km-long Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge (HZMB) is the world’s longest sea-crossing bridge, connecting Hong Kong with Zhuhai and Macao at the mouth of the Pearl River Estuary in China, comprising 22.9-km-long steel bridges. HZMB is the leading steel bridge in China, with top-level manufacturing and installation technology. This paper outlines the steel bridge construction experiences of HZMB to provide comparisons for the construction of other long sea-crossing steel bridges at home or abroad. The main considerations of construction constraints, scheme selection, structural and aesthetic design of HZMB are presented, and the following points related to new strategies in the steel bridge construction of HZMB are elaborated: (1) construction quality assurance, (2) automatic manufacturing technology, (3) large segment off shore installation, (4) eco-friendly paint (content limitation of volatile organic compounds) and new multifunctional inspection gantry, and (5) Guss Mastic Asphalt steel deck pavement system. The successful implementation of those strategies shows that the steel bridge construction of HZMB promotes improvement in the overall construction and management level of the Chinese bridge industry. The advanced experience of HZMB has opened up broad prospects for the design and construction of off shore bridge engineering in China.

Genome-wide Association Studies for Osteoporosis: A 2013 Update

        Hong-Wen Deng,Lei Zhang,Christopher J. Papasian,Hong-Wen Deng 대한골대사학회 2014 대한골대사학회지 Vol.21 No.2

In the past few years, the bone field has witnessed great advances in genome-wide as-sociation studies (GWASs) of osteoporosis, with a number of promising genes identified. In particular, meta-analysis of GWASs, aimed at increasing the power of studies by com-bining the results from different study populations, have led to the identification of nov-el associations that would not otherwise have been identified in individual GWASs. Re-cently, the first whole genome sequencing study for osteoporosis and fractures waspublished, reporting a novel rare nonsense mutation. This review summarizes the im-portant and representative findings published by December 2013. Comments are madeon the notable findings and representative studies for their potential influence and im-plications on our present understanding of the genetics of osteoporosis. Potential limi-tations of GWASs and their meta-analyses are evaluated, with an emphasis on under-standing the reasons for inconsistent results between different studies and clarificationof misinterpretation of GWAS meta-analysis results. Implications and challenges ofGWAS are also discussed, including the need for multi- and inter-disciplinary studies.

<P>Isocitrate dehydrogenase mutations with neomorphic activity of converting α-ketoglutarate to 2-hydroxyglutarate have been found in many types of cancers. We report an NMR-based assay specific for the mutant using 13C4-labeled α-ketoglutarate. It can be done in a complex mixture without extraction, give time-dependent absolute quantitation, and be applied to enzyme inhibition studies. Its merits over conventional assays should facilitate inhibitor developments for a new class of target-oriented anticancer agents.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/ancham/2013/ancham.2013.85.issue-24/ac402947a/production/images/medium/ac-2013-02947a_0006.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/ac402947a'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

Build-in Wiretap Channel I with Feedback and LDPC Codes

Wen, Hong,Gong, Guang,Ho, Pin-Han The Korea Institute of Information and Commucation 2009 Journal of communications and networks Vol.11 No.6

A wiretap channel I is one of the channel models that was proved to achieve unconditional security. However, it has been an open problem in realizing such a channel model in a practical network environment. The paper is committed to solve the open problem by introducing a novel approach for building wiretap channel I in which the eavesdropper sees a binary symmetric channel (BSC) with error probability p while themain channel is error free. By taking advantage of the feedback and low density parity check (LDPC) codes, our scheme adds randomness to the feedback signals from the destination for keeping an eavesdropper ignorant; on the other hand, redundancy is added and encoded by the LDPC codes such that a legitimate receiver can correctly receive and decode the signals. With the proposed approach, unconditionallysecure communication can be achieved through interactive communications, in which the legitimate partner can realize the secret information transmission without a pre-shared secret key even if the eavesdropper has better channel from the beginning.

Evaluation of Liver Metastases Using Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound: Enhancement Patterns and Influencing Factors

( Wen Tao Kong ),( Zheng Biao Ji ),( Wen Ping Wang ),( Hao Cai ),( Bei Jian Huang ),( Hong Ding ) 대한소화기학회 2016 Gut and Liver Vol.10 No.2

Background/Aims: To evaluate the enhancement patterns of liver metastases and their influencing factors using dynamic contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS). Methods: A total of 240 patients (139 male and 101 female; 58.5±11.2 years of age) diagnosed with liver metastases in our hospital were enrolled in this study to evaluate tumor characteristics using CEUS. A comparison of enhancement patterns with tumor size and primary tumor type was performed using the chi-square test. The differences between quantitative variables were evaluated with the independent-sample t-test and one-way analysis of variance. Results: The enhancement patterns of liver metastases on CEUS were categorized as diffuse homogeneous hyperenhancement (133/240, 55.4%), rim-like hyperenhancement (80/240, 33.3%), heterogeneous hyperenhancement (10/240, 4.2%), and isoenhancement (17/240, 7.1%). There were significant differences in the enhancement patterns during the arterial phase based on the nodule size (p=0.001). A total of 231 of the nodules showed complete washout during the portal phase, and 237 nodules were hypoenhanced during the delayed phase. The washout time was correlated with tumor vascularity, with a longer washout time observed in hypervascular metastases compared to hypovascular metastases (p=0.033). Conclusions: Diffuse homogeneous hyperenhancement followed by rapid washout was the most common enhancement pattern of liver metastases on CEUS and was affected by the nodule size and tumor vascularity. Small metastases were prone to show diffuse homogeneous hyperenhancement. Hypervascular metastases showed a significantly longer washout time compared to hypovascular metastases. Enhancement of Scenedesmus sp. LX1 Biomass Production and Lipid Accumulation Using Iron in Artificial Wastewater and Domestic Secondary Effluent

        ( Wen Yu Zhao ),( Jun Yi Yu ),( Yin Hu Wu ),( Yu Hong ),( Hong Ying Hu ) 한국미생물생명공학회(구 한국산업미생물학회) 2014 한국미생물·생명공학회지 Vol.42 No.2

While coupling wastewater treatment with microalgal bioenergy production is very promising, new approaches are needed to enhance microalgal growth and lipid accumulation in wastewater. Therefore, this study investigated the effect of iron on the growth, nutrient removal, and lipid accumulation of Scenedesmus sp. LX1 in both artificial wastewater and domestic secondary effluents. When increasing the iron concentration from 0 to 2 mg/l in the artificial wastewater, the biomass production of Scenedesmus sp. LX1 increased from 0.17 to 0.54 g/l; the nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiency increased from 15.7% and 80.6% to 97.0% and 99.2%, respectively; and the lipid content was enhanced 84.2%. The relationship between the carrying capacity/maximal population growth rate of Scenedesmus sp. LX1 and the initial iron concentration were also in accordance with the Monod model. Furthermore, when increasing the iron concentration to 2 mg/l in four different domestic secondary effluent samples, the lipid content and lipid production of Scenedesmus sp. LX1 was improved by 17.4-33.7% and 21.5-41.8%, respectively.

      • Genomic Screening for Targets Regulated by Berberine in Breast Cancer Cells

        Wen, Chun-Jie,Wu, Lan-Xiang,Fu, Li-Juan,Yu, Jing,Zhang, Yi-Wen,Zhang, Xue,Zhou, Hong-Hao Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.10

Berberine, a common isoquinoline alkaloid, has been shown to possess anti-cancer activities. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms are still not completely understood. In the current study, we investigated the effects of berberine on cell growth, colony formation, cell cycle distribution, and whether it improved the anticancer efficiency of cisplatin and doxorubicin in human breast cancer estrogen receptor positive (ER+) MCF-7 cells and estrogen receptor negative (ER-) MDA-MB-231 cells. Notably, berberine treatment significantly inhibited cell growth and colony formation in the two cell lines, berberine in combination with cisplatin exerting synergistic growth inhibitory effects. Accompanied by decreased growth, berberine induced G1 phase arrest in MCF-7 but not MDA-MB-231 cells. To provide a more detailed understanding of the mechanisms of action of berberine, we performed genome-wide expression profiling of berberine-treated cells using cDNA microarrays. This revealed that there were 3,397 and 2,706 genes regulated by berberine in MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cells, respectively. Fene oncology (GO) analysis identified that many of the target genes were involved in regulation of the cell cycle, cell migration, apoptosis, and drug responses. To confirm the microarray data, qPCR analysis was conducted for 10 selected genes based on previously reported associations with breast cancer and GO analysis. In conclusion, berberine exhibits inhibitory effects on breast cancer cells proliferation, which is likely mediated by alteration of gene expression profiles.

Physical Layer Technique to Assist Authentication Based on PKI for Vehicular Communication Networks

( Hong Wen ),( Pin-han Ho ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2011 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.5 No.2

In this paper, we introduce a novel Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) based message authentication scheme that takes advantage of temporal and spatial uniqueness in physical layer channel responses for each transmission pair in vehicular communication networks. The proposed scheme aims at achieving fast authentication and minimizing the packet transmission overhead without compromising the security requirements, in which most messages can be authenticated through an extreme fast physical-layer authentication mechanism. We will demonstrate that the proposed secure authentication scheme can achieve very short message delay and reduced communication overhead through extensive analysis and simulation.
