      • Reinterprething The History of Life From a Design Perspective

        Therefore, I begin by assuming that human beings are the intended outcome of the history of life. It follows that the history of life was planned from the outset to provide a temperate environment and nourishing food for us, requiring the establishment of complex, self-sustaining ecosystems. It also follows that the first human beings were born into a world already populated by human-like mammals capable of raising them from birth. This, in turn, required other animals as precursors, implying that what Darwinists regard as a contingent pattern is actually a necessary progression, at least in general outline. Like Copernicus's shift from a geocentric to a heliocentric solar system, the shift from denying to affirming design is a conceptual change with far-reaching implications for our understanding of objective reality. A design perspective accounts for at least some of the anomalies confronting Darwin's theory, and could lead to more fruitful research programmes in biology.

        다음은 창립 10주년을 맞은 대한음성학회의 초청으로 내한한 런던대학의 음성학. 언어학과 교수인 존 웰스 교수가 1987년 9월 22일에 한글학회 강당에서 열린 창립 기념식장에서 "현대 세계의 음성학"이라는 제목으로 행한 특별강연의 초록이다. 전반부는 생략하고 후반부만을 원문과 우리말로 옮겨 싣는다. It is an honour to be speaking on phonetics at the invitation of the Phonetic Society of Korea. Through the Korean Hangout script, invented in the fifteenth century at the instigation of the great King Sejong, and the work Hunminjeongeum which describes it, this country has an important place in the world history of phonetics. Phonetics is the description and analysis of pronunciation. Spoken language can be investigated at three points: in the speaker (articulatory phonetics), in the hearer (auditory phonetics), and in the physical speech signal (acoustic phonetics)... Beginners in English who are Korean mother tongue have to learn to make the sound 'f' as in "coffee", which is a voiceless labio-dental fricative, lip on upper teeth. They also have to learn to make [\theta]sound in "think", a voiceless dental fricative.

        방송이 자신의 자유를 마음껏 누릴 수 있는 최선의 방법은 그 책임을 충실히 하는데 있다. 그렇지 않으면 타율이나 규제가 따르기 마련이다. 특히 우리나라는 세계에서도 유래를 ?아볼 수 없을 정도로 방송드라마의 인가가 매우 높은 나라다. 방송국 내에서조차도 드라마가 차지하는 비중을 인정하여 '소위' 드라마의 왕국 이라고 말할 정도다. 이처럼 드라마가 차지하는 비중이 매우 크기 때문에 드라마가 우리 사회에 미치는 영향은 매우 크다고 하겠다. 본고는 이러한 방송드라마의 '사회적 책임과 역할'에 대해서 한·일간의 방송문화나 드라마 제작경향 등을 중심으로 비교 분석 하고자 한다.

      • Cloning Livestock from Cultured Cells Creates New Opportunities for Agriculture

        It is remarkable that nuclear transfer using differentiated donor cells can produce physiologically normal cloned animals, but the process is inefficient and highly prone to epigenetic errors. Aberrant patterns of gene expression in clones contribute to the cumulative losses and abnormal phenotypes observed throughout development. Any long lasting effects from cloning, as revealed in some mouse studies, need to be comprehensively evaluated in cloned livestock. These issues raise animal welfare concerns that currently limit the acceptability and applicability of the technology. It is expected that improved reprogramming of the donor genome will increase cloning efficiencies realising a wide range of new agricultural and medical opportunities. Efficient cloning potentially enables rapid dissemination of elite genotypes from nucleus herds to commercial producers. Initial commercialization will, however, focus on producing small numbers of high value animals for natural breeding especially clones of progeny-tested sires, The continual advances in animal genomics towards the identification of genes that influence livestock production traits and human health increase the ability to genetically modify animals to enhance agricultural efficiency and produce superior quality food and biomedical products for niche markets. The potential opportunities in animal agriculture are more challenging than those in biomedicine as they require greater biological efficiency at reduced cost to be economically viable and because of the more difficult consumer acceptance issues. Nevertheless, cloning and transgenesis are being used together to increase the genetic merit of livestock; however, the integration of this technology into farming systems remains some distance in the future.
