Informal Trade along the China-North Korea Border

Justin V. Hastings,Yaohui Wang 동아시아연구원 2018 Journal of East Asian Studies Vol.18 No.2

Why do Chinese traders along the China–North Korea border turn to informal trade, and what does it provide for them? Using a unique set of interviews with Chinese formal and informal traders operating in North Korea, we argue that the strategies of informal trade are a calculated response to certain types of risk. In doing so, we introduce a typology of risks and the mechanisms by which informal trade allows traders to mitigate those risks. Because informal traders bypass trade regulations and border checkpoints, they are able to mitigate risk more cheaply than formal traders in some cases and can overcome barriers that can cause failure in formal trade. Informal traders can thus maintain trade in many circumstances, including across North Korean personnel instability and policy reversals, Chinese sanctions enforcement, and delays and smuggling crackdowns on both sides of the border.

Does Acupuncture Therapy Alter Activation of Neural Pathway for Pain Perception in Irritable Bowel Syndrome?: A Comparative Study of True and Sham Acupuncture Using Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging

( Winnie Cw Chu ),( Justin Cy Wu ),( David Tw Yew ),( Liang Zhang ),( Lin Shi ),( David Kw Yeung ),( De Feng Wang ),( Raymond Ky Tong ),( Ya Wen Chan ),( Li Xing Lao ),( Ping C Leung ),( Brian M Berma 대한소화기기능성질환·운동학회 2012 Journal of Neurogastroenterology and Motility (JNM Vol.18 No.3

Background/Aims Patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are characterized by abnormal central processing with altered brain activation in response to visceral nociceptive signals. The effect of electroacupuncture (EA) on IBS patients is unclear. The study is set to study the effect of EA on brain activation during noxious rectal distension in IBS patients using a randomized sham-controlled model. Methods Thirty IBS-diarrhea patients were randomized to true electroacupuncture or sham acupuncture. Functional MRI was performed to evaluate cerebral activation at the following time points: (1) baseline when there was rectal distension only, (2) rectal distension during application of EA, (3) rectal distension after cessation of EA and (4) EA alone with no rectal distension. Group comparison was made under each condition using SPM5 program. Results Rectal distension induced significant activation of the anterior cingulated cortex, prefrontal cortex, thalamus, temporal regions and cerebellum at baseline. During and immediately after EA, increased cerebral activation from baseline was observed in the anterior cingulated cortex, bilateral prefrontal cortex, thalamus, temporal regions and right insula in both groups. However, true electroacupuncture led to significantly higher activation at right insula, as well as pulvinar and medial nucleus of the thalamus when compared to sham acupuncture. Conclusions We postulate that acupuncture might have the potential effect of pain modulation in IBS by 2 actions: (1) modulation of serotonin pathway at insula and (2) modulation of mood and affection in higher cortical center via ascending pathway at the pulvinar and medial nucleus of the thalamus. • Chinese Female Immigrants English-Speaking Ability and Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Practices in the New York Metropolitan Area

Chen, Wei-Ti,Wang, Justin Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.2

Background: Breast and cervical cancers are significant causes of mortality and morbidity for Asian women, and poor English-speaking ability is a barrier to cancer prevention practices. Materials and Methods: This project tested relationships among English-speaking ability and early detection practices regarding to breast and cervical cancer among female Chinese immigrants. A descriptive cross-sectional survey was used. Results: 175 female Chinese immigrants completed the survey in the breast cancer prevention section, and 35 of them also completed the cervical cancer prevention section. Some 63% of them had heard about the clinical breast exam (CBE), but only 54% had had a CBE. While 46% of the participants were aware of their need for a Pap smear, only 31% had heard about it and had undergone a pelvic exam. Conclusions: English-speaking ability was strongly associated with immigrant women's knowledge of female cancer early detection. Culturally and linguistic issues should be considered as the first step to access immigrant population in designing future education intervention.

Real-World Investigation of Eosinophilic-Associated Disease Overlap (REVEAL): Analysis of a US Claims Database

        Brailean Anamaria,Kwiatek Justin,Kielar Danuta,Katial Rohit,Wang Xia,Xu Xiao,Kim Yong Jin,Stokes Michael,Stirnadel-Farrant Heide A. 대한천식알레르기학회 2023 Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Research Vol.15 No.5

Purpose: The epidemiology of eosinophil-associated diseases (EADs) is not yet fully understood. While some studies have been conducted on stand-alone eosinophilic diseases, there is scarce evidence on the degree of overlap among rarer conditions. Methods: The retrospective Real-world inVestigation of Eosinophilic-Associated disease overLap (REVEAL) study used data from the Optum® Clinformatics® insurance claims database to describe and characterize disease overlap among 11 EADs: allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis, atopic dermatitis, chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps, eosinophilic gastritis/gastroenteritis, eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis, eosinophilic esophagitis, bullous pemphigoid, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, chronic spontaneous urticaria, and non–cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis. Patient records with EADs of interest were identified between January 1, 2015, and June 30, 2018. Results: Overall, 1,326,645 patients were included; 74.4% had 1 EAD, 20.5% had ≥ 2 EADs, and 5.1% had ≥ 3 EADs. Higher rates of disease overlap were associated with older age. Higher blood eosinophil counts were also observed in patients with a greater number of overlapping conditions, suggesting a common role for eosinophilic inflammation in the pathogenesis of multiple diseases. Furthermore, greater disease overlap was associated with higher disease severity in most cohorts. Conclusions: Results from this study have implications for quantifying unmet needs and can be used to inform treatment guidelines and raise the awareness of eosinophilic inflammation and EAD overlap among healthcare professionals from a range of disease specialties.

The Work Experience of Newly Recruited Male Nurses during COVID-19: A Qualitative Study

        Huiyue Zhou,Xin Wang,Ruofei Du,Xiang Cheng,Kexin Zheng,Shiqi Dong,Justin Henri,Changying Chen,Tao Wang 한국간호과학회 2021 Asian Nursing Research Vol.15 No.3

Purpose: This study was to investigate the work experience of newly recruited male nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: With a phenomenological approach, this qualitative study was adopted semistructured interviews by phone or video calls. A total of 9 male nurses newly recruited for the COVID-19 wards in Chinese hospitals were interviewed for this study. And Colaizzi's method was applied for evaluation in the data analysis. Results: Based on our findings, three themes were extracted. First, the newly recruited male nurses showed negative emotions at the beginning of COVID-19 epidemic, which was caused by changes in working conditions and content, but also prompted the nurses to change the way of coping with the crisis. Second, they gradually mastered the working skills and psychological training to cope with COVID- 19 and developed a positive attitude toward life and a high sense of professional responsibility. Finally, we learned about their needs to respond to public health emergencies such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusion: COVID-19 is a disaster for all of humanity. The newly recruited male nurses are an important force in emergency rescue. Although they suffered from short-term negative emotions, they quickly adapted to the crisis. In order to better prepare for future emergencies, the disaster response capacity of newly recruited male nurses needs to be further improved. In addition, newly recruited male nurses have a strong demand for timely and personalized career development guidance.

Bisphosphonate’s and Intermittent Parathyroid Hormone’s Effect on Human Spinal Fusion: A Systematic Review of the Literature

        Michael A. Stone,Andre M. Jakoi,Justin A. Iorio,Martin H. Pham,Neil N. Patel,Patrick C. Hsieh,John C. Liu,Frank L. Acosta,Raymond Hah,Jeffrey C. Wang 대한척추외과학회 2017 Asian Spine Journal Vol.11 No.3

There has been a conscious effort to address osteoporosis in the aging population. As bisphosphonate and intermittent parathyroid hormone (PTH) therapy become more widely prescribed to treat osteoporosis, it is important to understand their effects on other physiologic processes, particularly the impact on spinal fusion. Despite early animal model studies and more recent clinical studies, the impact of these medications on spinal fusion is not fully understood. Previous animal studies suggest that bisphosphonate therapy resulted in inhibition of fusion mass with impeded maturity and an unknown effect on biomechanical strength. Prior animal studies demonstrate an improved fusion rate and fusion mass microstructure with the use of intermittent PTH. The purpose of this study was to determine if bisphosphonates and intermittent PTH treatment have impact on human spinal fusion. A systematic review of the literature published between 1980 and 2015 was conducted using major electronic databases. Studies reporting outcomes of human subjects undergoing 1, 2, or 3-level spinal fusion while receiving bisphosphonates and/or intermittent PTH treatment were included. The results of relevant human studies were analyzed for consensus on the effects of these medications in regards to spinal fusion. There were nine human studies evaluating the impact of these medications on spinal fusion. Improved fusion rates were noted in patients receiving bisphosphonates compared to control groups, and greater fusion rates in patients receiving PTH compared to control groups. Prior studies involving animal models found an improved fusion rate and fusion mass microstructure with the use of intermittent PTH. No significant complications were demonstrated in any study included in the analysis. Bisphosphonate use in humans may not be a deterrent to spinal fusion. Intermittent parathyroid use has shown early promise to increase fusion mass in both animal and human studies but further studies are needed to support routine use.

        Siddharthan, Venkatraman,Van Wettere, Arnaud J.,Li, Rong,Miao, Jinxin,Wang, Zhongde,Morrey, John D.,Julander, Justin G. 3M Company 2017 Virology Vol.507 No.-

Abstract

Zika virus (ZIKV) infection was investigated in adult and fetal STAT2 knock-out (KO) hamsters. Subcutaneous injection of ZIKV of adults resulted in morbidity, mortality, and infection of the uterus, placenta, brain, spinal cord, and testicles, thus providing an opportunity to evaluate congenital ZIKV infection in a second rodent species besides mice. ZIKV-infected cells with morphologies of Sertoli cells and spermatogonia were observed in the testes, which may have implications for sexual transmission and male sterility. Neonates exposed as fetuses to ZIKV at 8 days post-coitus were not smaller than controls. Nevertheless, infectious virus and ZIKV RNA was detected in some, but not all, placentas and fetal brains of KO hamsters. STAT2 KO hamsters may be useful for addressing sexual transmission, pathogenesis, routes of fetal infection, and neurological disease outcomes, and may also be used in antiviral or vaccine studies to identify intervention strategies.

Highlights

Infection of STAT2 knock-out hamsters resulted in morbidity and mortality.

The uterus, placenta, brain, spinal cord, and testicles were infected.

ZIKV infected cells with morphologies of Sertoli cells and spermatogonia.

ZIKV was detected in some, but not all, placentas and fetal brains of KO hamsters.

Fetuses exposed to ZIKV were not smaller than controls.

Integrated omics approaches to characterize a nuclear receptor corepressor-associated histone deacetylase in mouse skeletal muscle

        Gong, Yingyun,Cao, Rui,Ding, Guolian,Hong, Sungguan,Zhou, Wenjun,Lu, Wenyun,Damle, Manashree,Fang, Bin,Wang, Chuhan C.,Qian, Justin,Lie, Natasha,Lanzillotta, Cristina,Rabinowitz, Joshua D.,Sun, Zheng Elsevier 2018 Molecular and cellular endocrinology Vol.471 No.-

Abstract

Nuclear receptors regulate gene expression by differentially binding to coactivators or corepressors in a ligand-dependent manner, which further recruits a set of epigenome-modifying enzymes that remodel chromatin conformation. Histone acetylation is a major epigenomic change controlled by histone acetyltransferases (HATs) and histone deacetylases (HDACs). HDAC3 is the only HDAC that confers the enzymatic activity to the complexes nucleated by nuclear receptor corepressors NCoR and SMRT. To address the metabolic function of HDAC3, we have deleted it specifically in mouse skeletal muscles. We have performed the following omics profiling in skeletal muscles of these mice: (1) RNA-seq profiling of total RNA; (2) Global nuclear run-on (GRO-seq) analysis of nascent RNAs; (3) Chromatin immuno-precipitation (ChIP-seq) of HDAC3 at both early evening and early morning; (4) proteomics profiling with mass spectrometry; (5) snap-shot metabolomics profiling of water-soluble metabolites at the basal condition; (6) snap-shot metabolomics profiling of lipid species at the basal condition; (7) kinetic fluxomics analysis of glucose utilization using 13C6-glucose In vivo during treadmill running exercise. These approaches have provided several novel insights into how nuclear receptors regulate circadian rhythm of skeletal muscle fuel metabolism, which has been published elsewhere. Here we present the original datasets and technical details during the execution, analysis, and interpretation of these omics studies.

Highlights

A mouse model with skeletal muscle-specific KO of HDAC3.

in vivo RNA-seq, GRO-seq, and ChIP-seq identified relevance to circadian clock.

Total proteome profiling in muscle samples.

Metabolomics profiling identified disruption of BCAAs metabolism.

Fluxomics with 13C-glucose in vivo during treadmill running.
