<P>This column describes the current status of Web-based video in World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) standardization efforts. The new W3C specifications are designed to facilitate the cross-community integration of media objects, online media captioning, and temporal and spatial media fragments using uniform resource identifiers (URIs) designed to make video a first-class citizen on the Web.</P>
Hydrogen Passivation of Impurities in Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>

<P>Carbon and nitrogen are contaminant impurities in Al2O3 dielectrics grown by atomic layer deposition, leading to deleterious effects in device performance. We investigate whether these impurities can be passivated using hydrogen. The role of atomic hydrogen in the electronic properties is addressed by examining formation energies and charge-state transition levels of C-H and N-H complexes. Combined with calculated band alignment, we then assess the impact on Al2O3/semiconductor interfaces. We find that hydrogen is indeed an effective passivating agent: it removes carbon-related carrier traps and passivates negative fixed charge associated with nitrogen.</P>
Lifting a Metadata Model to the Semantic Multimedia World

This paper describes best-practices in lifting an image metadata standard to the Semantic Web. We provide guidelines on how an XML-based metadata format can be converted into an OWL ontology. Additionally, we discuss how this ontology can be mapped to the W3C's Media Ontology. This ontology is a standardization effort of the W3C to provide a core vocabulary for multimedia annotations. The approach presented here can be applied to other XML-based metadata standards.
Vacancy defects in indium oxide: An ab-initio study

First-principles density functional theory is employed to study the electrical behavior of oxygen and indium vacancies in indium oxide (In<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>). The oxygen vacancy is found to be a double donor. The indium vacancy is a triple acceptor, which >can be a compensation center in n-type In<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>, leading to n-type carrier reduction. However, its high formation energy under p-type conditions makes it unlikely to be a source of p-type carriers by itself.

The use of palm sap sugar as chocolate sweetener results in chocolate with relatively high viscosity due to the presence of high moisture and/or amorphous sugar. To overcome this problem, approaches to maintain the chocolate viscosity that can be easily and feasibly applied by small-scale chocolate producers are highly required. In this work, chocolate was produced using combination of ball mill and a mixer equipped with vacuum pump. Modification of processing method using a longer duration of the vacuum process and modification of formulation by increasing lecithin concentration were challenged. To evaluate the effect of vacuum process, palm sap sugar-sweetened chocolates were produced without vacuum process, with 10 min of vacuum process and with 60 min of vacuum process during dry mixing. As reference, sucrose-sweetened chocolate was produced using 10 min of vacuum process. Ten minutes of vacuum process was the vacuum duration used during dry mixing in the previous studies. The results showed that the use of 60 min of vacuum process was most effective in evaporating moisture which resulted in a lower viscosity. Hence, 60 min of vacuum process was, then, selected for the study on production of chocolates with a higher lecithin concentrations. Palm sap sugar-sweetened chocolates produced with 60 min of vacuum process were formulated with 0.6%, 0.7% and 0.8% lecithin. As reference, palm sap sugar-sweetened chocolates with 0.4% lecithin was also produced. The result showed that the higher the lecithin concentration, the higher the Casson yield value and the lower the Casson plastic viscosity were observed. Thus, the amount of lecithin added into the chocolate should consider the application of the chocolate.
Parallel Deblocking Filtering in MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 on Massively Parallel Architectures

<P>The deblocking filter in the MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 standard is computationally complex because of its high content adaptivity, resulting in a significant number of data dependencies. These data dependencies interfere with parallel filtering of multiple macroblocks (MBs) on massively parallel architectures. In this letter, we introduce a novel MB partitioning scheme for concurrent deblocking in the MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 standard, based on our idea of deblocking filter independency, a corrected version of the limited error propagation effect proposed in the letter. Our proposed scheme enables concurrent MB deblocking of luma samples with limited synchronization effort, independently of slice configuration, and is compliant with the MPEG-4 H.264/AVC standard. We implemented the method on the massively parallel architecture of the graphics processing unit (GPU). Experimental results show that our GPU implementation achieves faster-than real-time deblocking at 1309 frames per second for 1080p video pictures. Both software-based deblocking filters and state-of-the-art GPU-enabled algorithms are outperformed in terms of speed by factors up to 10.2 and 19.5, respectively, for 1080p video pictures.</P>
