      • High-Resolution Optical Measurement of Fiber Optics Transmission Line Length

        This paper studies a frame-loss-free shunt system for broadband optical fiber transmission lines. This system switches transmitting optical pulses between duplicated optical fibers to avoid any interruption to communication. A high-resolution measurement technique is necessary to evaluate the optical fiber length. We applied an interferometry technique to adjust 15 km duplicated optical lines at a resolution of 10 mm. An optical line switching system and procedure are designed for use in replacing in-service optical lines. A free space optics (FSO) system adjusts the length of an in-service optical line by up to 100 m. A gigabit ether-passive optical network (GE-PON) line is successfully replaced with an extended line while maintaining transmission.

        Relationship Between Cigarette Smoking and Muscle Strength in Japanese Men

        Objectives: To investigate the link between cigarette smoking and muscle strength in Japanese men. Methods: We used data on 4249 Japanese men, aged 43.3±13.9 years, in this cross-sectional investigation study. Grip strength and leg strength were measured as indicators of overall muscle strength. Meanwhile, subjects’ cigarette smoking habits were recorded by trained medical staff. The effect of cigarette smoking on muscle strength was evaluated. Results: A total of 1618 men (38.1%) were smokers and 1481 men (34.9%) exercised regularly. Significant differences in muscle strength were noted between men with and without a Brinkman index of 400 or greater, after adjusting for age. After adjusting for age, height, body weight and exercise habits, associations between the Brinkman index and leg strength and the ratio of leg strength to body weight were attenuated. Conclusions: Cigarette smoking might be negatively associated with muscle strength, especially grip strength in Japanese men.

        Structural Design of a High-rise Building with Structural Control System for Various Lateral Forces

        In steel construction the flange of a steel I-beam is usualy coped to allow clearance at the connection. The presence of acope in a beam wil reduce the strength of the beam in the coped region. Local web buckling at the coped region may occurwhen the cope length is long and/or the cope depth is large, provided that lateral-torsional buckling of the beam is prevented.coped I-beams although no experimental evidence was provided to support the recomendation. In order to verify suchrecomendation, an experimental and numerical investigation of coped I-beams with stiffeners at the coped region wasconducted and reported in this paper. The study showed that current recommendations did not consider the web distortionproperly, i.e. local web buckling could not be prevented efficiently if only horizontal stiffeners were provided at the copedregion. Both the test and the numerical results showed that the horizontal stiffeners at the cope displaced lateraly due to grossweb distortion. Based on the results of the parametric study of coped beams with diferent configurations of horizontal andvertical stiffeners, it was found that for cope depth to beam depth ratio (dc/D)≥0.3, both horizontal and vertical stiffeners arerequired in order to prevent local web buckling at the cope region. A preliminary recomendation for the design of copedbeams with both horizontal and vertical stiffeners was proposed according to the key findings of the investigation.

        Enzymatic Formation of Guaiacylglycerol 8-O-4'-(Coniferyl Alcohol) Ether from Coniferyl Alcohol with Enzyme Preparations of Eucommia ulmoides

        Lignans and neolignans are optically active plant secondary metabolites. Research on biosynthesis of lignans has already been advanced especially for the formation of (+) pinoresinol but information on the biosynthesis of 8-O-4'- neolignans is still limited. Moreover, the chemical structure(position of substituents on aromatic rings) and stereochemistry of 8-O-4' neolignans is not clear. Katayama and Kado discovered that incubation of cell-free extracts from E. ulmoides with coniferyl alcohol in the presence of hydrogen peroxide gave (+)-erythro- and (-)-threo- guaiacylglycerol 8-O-4'-(coniferyl alcohol) ether (GGCE)(diastereomeric ratio, 3:2) which is the first report on enzymatic formation of optically active -8-O-4' neolignans from an achiral monolignol. In this aspect, enzymatic formation of guaiacyl 8-O-4' neolignan is noteworthy to clarify its stereochemistry from incubation of coniferyl alcohol with enzyme prepared from Eucommia ulmoides. In this experiment, soluble and insoluble enzymes prepared from E. ulmoides were incubated with 30 mM coniferyl alcohol(CA) for 60 min. The enzyme catalyzed GGCE, dehydrodiconiferyl alcohol(DHCA), and pinoresinol identified by reversed phase HPLC. Consequently, diastereomeric compositions of GGCE were determined as erythro and threo isomer. Enantiomeric composition was determined by the chiral column HPLC. Both enzyme preparations enantioselectively formed (-)-erythro, (+)-erythro and (+)-threo, (-)-threo-GGCEs respectively.

        A Rare Case of Primary Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Stomach and a Review of the 56 Cases Reported in Japan

        We report an extremely rare case of primary squamous cell carcinoma of the stomach. A 69-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with a 2-month history of dysphagia and tarry stools. Endoscopic examination revealed a cauliflower-shaped protruding mass along the lesser curvature of the gastric cardia. Biopsy of the lesion revealed squamous cell carcinoma of the stomach. Computed tomography revealed a thickened stomach wall and a mass protruding into the gastric lumen. Total gastrectomy with splenectomy, distal pancreatectomy, and Roux-en-Y reconstruction was performed, together with a lower thoracic esophagectomy via a left thoracotomy. Histopathological examination of the specimen revealed well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma of the stomach. Postoperative follow-up was uneventful for the first 18 months. However, multiple liver metastases and para-aortic lymph node metastasis developed subsequently. Despite systemic combination chemotherapy, the patient died because of progression of the recurrent tumors. Here, we review the characteristics of 56 cases of gastric squamous cell carcinoma reported in Japan.

        This paper presents a method for adjusting a free space optics (FSO) system that links two single-mode optical fibers (SMFs) using collimators. It operates as if the two SMFs were seamlessly connected without the need for any photoelectric devices. Collimator focusing as well as axis alignment is critical for low loss transmission and is performed using an opto-mechatronic system in the proposed method.
