In this short note we discuss degrees of twisted Alexander polynomials and demonstrate an explicit example of a closed 3-manifold which is related to the degree formula due to Friedl, Kim and Kitayama.

<P>An X-ray tomographic technique was developed to investigate the internal magnetic domain structure in a micrometer-sized ferromagnetic sample. The technique is based on a scanning hard X-ray nanoprobe using X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). From transmission XMCD images at the Gd L-3 edge as a function of the sample rotation angle, the three-dimensional (3D) distribution of a single component of the magnetic vector in a GdFeCo microdisc was reconstructed with a spatial resolution of 360 nm, using a modified algebraic reconstruction algorithm. The method is applicable to practical magnetic materials and can be extended to 3D visualization of the magnetic domain formation process under external magnetic fields. Optimization of TomoTherapy couch density in the RayStation treatment-planning system

The aim of this study is to establish the treatment couch model of TomoTherapy in a RayStation treatment-planning system. Point-dose measurements using a cylindrical solid phantom and ionizing chamber were performed to determine the optimal mass densities of the couch components by minimizing the discrepancy between the measured and calculated attenuations. To validate the efcacy of the determined mass densities, patient-specifc delivery quality assurance (DQA) of the TomoDirect plans for eight palliative spine radiotherapy (PSR), fve postmastectomy radiotherapy (PMRT), and TomoHelical plans for ten treatment sites were performed using an ionizing chamber, EBT3 flm, and Delta4 diode detector with the default couch model (DCM) and corrected couch model (CCM). The dose diferences and global gamma statistics at 3 mm/3% and at 2 mm/2% were evaluated and statistically compared between the DQA plans of DCM and CCM. When applying the default and optimal couch models for treatment planning, the mean dose diferences between the measured and calculated attenuations were − 4.8% and − 0.1%, respectively. In all DQA for PSR cases using the CCM, the dose diference and gamma statistics were statistically improved compared to those using the DCM (P<0.05). However, there was no signifcant diference in the dose diferences and gamma statistics between the PMRT and TomoHelical cases, except for the flm DQA for PMRT. The results demonstrated that the couch model in RayStation should be commissioned for TomoTherapy treatment planning when a greater dose contribution is expected from the posterior direction.

Background/Aims: Asymptomatic esophageal eosinophilia (aEE) is considered to be a potential precursor of eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). However, there are few clinical parameters that can be used to evaluate the disease. Therefore, we aimed to clarify the factors involved in the symptoms of EoE by examining the clinicopathological differences between aEE and EoE. Methods: We reviewed 41 patients with esophageal eosinophilia who underwent endoscopic ultrasonography and high-resolution manometry. They were divided into the aEE group (n=16) and the EoE group (n=25) using the Frequency Scale for the Symptoms of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease score. The patients’ clinicopathological findings were collected and examined. Results: The median Frequency Scale for the Symptoms of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease score was 3.0 in the aEE group and 10.0 in the EoE group. There was no significant difference in patient characteristics, endoscopic findings and pathological findings. The cutoff value for wall thickening was 3.13 mm for the total esophageal wall thickness and 2.30 mm for the thickness from the surface to the muscular layer (total esophageal wall thickness: 84.0% sensitivity, 75.0% specificity; thickness from the surface to the muscular layer: 84.0% sensitivity, 68.7% specificity). The high-resolution manometry study was abnormal in seven patients (43.8%) in the aEE group and in 12 (48.0%) in the EoE group. The contractile front velocity was slower in the EoE group (p=0.026). Conclusions: The esophageal wall thickening in the lower portion of the esophagus is an important clinical factors related to the symptoms in patients with EoE.
Smart Suit: Soft Power Suit with Semi-active Assist Mechanism

We have been developing “mart Suit”as a soft and light-weight wearable power assist system. A prototype for preventing low-back injury in agricultural works and its semi-active assist mechanism have been developed in the previous study. The previous prototype succeeded to reduce about 14% of average muscle fatigues of body trunk in waist extension/flexion motion. In this paper, we describe a prototype of smart suit for supporting waist and knee joint, and its control method for preventing the displacement of the adjustable assist force mechanism in order to keep the assist efficiency.
Representations of the Braid Group and Punctured Torus Bundles

In this short note, we consider a family of linear representations of the braid group and the fundamental group of a punctured torus bundle over the circle. We construct an irreducible (special) unitary representation of the fundamental group of a closed 3-manifold obtained by the Dehn filling.
