Inclusive design is increasingly gaining attention, as some people find using products difficult after becoming physically impaired, despite daily use. However, making inclusive products is a challenge for designers or companies, as a lack of knowledge and tools stems their low involvement in it. Developing inclusive design tools is thus needed. This study developed criteria to assess upper extremity capabilities corresponding to specific daily activities. A questionnaire survey was conducted among 58 physiatrists and orthopedists. Non-parametric statistics were employed and medians were adopted as representative scores in the assessment criteria based on normality and reliability test results, non-normal data, and strong reliability of respondents in ranking. Consequently, an assessment tool was developed with 14 criteria (divided into range of motion and strength) and capability scores between 0 and 100, which discerned the moderately impaired from the severely disabled and fully capable. Since the doctors agreed to adopt the criteria but assign numeric values, especially for mild impairments, their capability assessment perception was likely influenced by dichotomy. To compensate for these deficits, qualitative or ergonomic approaches are considered simultaneously.

Empathy is an important aspect of social cognition, and its deficit has been associated with maladaptive psychological conditions. Various emotional and cognitive processes contribute to the experience of empathy. Among these, empathic concern and perspective-taking are often considered as central components. The current study aimed to test whether interventions to promote empathic concern and perspective-taking could enhance early attention to socioemotional information and perspective-taking abilities. Healthy young adults participated in this study and were assigned to one of four intervention groups. Each group receiving empathic concern promotion, visual perspective-taking promotion, a combination of both, or neither. After the completion of intervention task, participants’ attentional biases towards fearful, happy, and sad faces were assessed. Participants then completed the director task to evaluate their perspective-taking abilities. Results indicated that all groups receiving treatment tended to respond faster while taking the director’s perspective than the no treatment control Although we did not find a combined effect between these two interventions, these results indicate that interventions to promote empathic concern or visual perspective-taking improve one’s ability to take others’ perspectives. These intervention-dependent changes may facilitate socio-cognitive processes associated with empathy.
Whole-transcriptome analysis of mouse adipose tissue in response to short-term caloric restriction

<P>Caloric restriction (CR) has been shown to extend the lifespan of many species by improving cellular function and organismal health. Additionally, fat reduction by CR may play an important role in lengthening lifespan and preventing severe age-related diseases. Interestingly, CR induced the greatest transcriptome change in the epididymal fat of mice in our study. In this transcriptome analysis, we identified and categorized 446 genes that correlated with CR level. We observed down-regulation of several signaling pathways, including insulin/insulin-like growth factor 1 (insulin/IGF-1), epidermal growth factor (EGF), transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta), and canonical wingless-type mouse mammary tumor virus integration site (Wnt). Many genes related to structural features, including extracellular matrix structure, cell adhesion, and the cytoskeleton, were down-regulated, with a strong correlation to the degree of CR. Furthermore, genes related to the cell cycle and adipogenesis were down-regulated. These biological processes are well-identified targets of insulin/IGF-1, EGF, TGF-beta, and Wnt signaling. In contrast, genes involved in specific metabolic processes, including the tricarboxylic acid cycle and the electron transport chain were up-regulated. We performed in silico analysis of the promoter sequences of CR-responsive genes and identified two associated transcription factors, Paired-like homeodomain 2 (Pitx2) and Paired box gene 6 (Pax6). Our results suggest that strict regulation of signaling pathways is critical for creating the optimal energy homeostasis to extend lifespan.</P>
Assessment Criteria and Capability Scores for Visual Functions from Inclusive Design Perspectives

With the ageing globe and the movement towards social integration, there is pressing need for more tools to aid in inclusive design. As an effort to stimulate inclusive design, this study focused on developing assessment criteria for visual function abilities that are more accessible to designers. A questionnaire survey was conducted with 51 ophthalmologists. Despite the sample size ( >30), due to the non-normal distribution of data, non-parametric statistics were employed and medians were adopted as representative scores of the assessment criteria having strong reliability for ranking the respondents. Consequently, an assessment tool was developed with 17 criteria (divided into visual acuity, visual field, and color vision) along with capability scores. To make the criteria more accessible, this study endeavored to expand the coverage to mild impairments, provide numerical capability scores by criteria, and adopt descriptions reflecting everyday activities. In this study, a dichotomous perception between ‘legally blind’ and ‘legally sighted’ was found. In future studies, in order to offset this deficit of perception, an ergonomic approach based on mechanical measures can also be considered.

<P>Recently, substantial attention has been focused on the association between obesity and chronic inflammation. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity induces the activation of the IL-1 type I receptor (IL-1RI)-mediated inflammatory signaling cascade in the skeletal muscle of mice. Male C57BL/6J mice were fed either an HFD or a normal diet (ND) for 12 wk. Compared with the results in mice receiving the ND, the HFD increased the expression of IL-1RI and downstream signaling proteins, such as myeloid differentiation primary response gene 88 (MyD88), IL-1R-associated kinase 4 and phospho-transforming growth factor-activated kinase 1 in the skeletal muscle. Additionally, activities of both inhibitor of κB kinase β and inhibitor of κB degradation were significantly elevated in the skeletal muscle of mice fed with an HFD compared with mice receiving an ND. In contrast, the levels of other downstream transcription factors, such as activator protein-1 and INF regulatory factor 5, were not affected by the HFD. These results suggest that the IL-1RI-MyD88-nuclear factor κB signaling pathway might be involved in the induction of the inflammatory response in the skeletal muscle of mice fed with an HFD.</P>
