Peroxiredoxin (Prx) is a family of bifunctional proteins that exhibit peroxidase and chaperone activities. Prx proteins contain a conserved Cys residue that undergoes a redox change between thiol and disulfide states. 2-Cys Prx enzymes, a subgroup of Prx family, are intrinsically susceptible to reversible hyperoxidation to cysteine sulfinic acid during catalysis. Cysteine hyperoxidation of Prx was shown to result in loss of peroxidase activity and a concomitant gain of chaperone activity. Reduction of sulfinic Prx enzymes, the first known biological example of such a reaction, is catalyzed by sulfiredoxin (Srx) in the presence of ATP. Srx appears to exist solely to support the reversible sulfinic modification of 2-Cys Prx enzymes. Srx specifically binds to 2-Cys Prx enzymes by recognizing several critical surface-exposed residues of the Prxs, and transfer the γ-phosphate of ATP to their sulfinic moiety, using its conserved cysteine as the phosphate carrier. Particle size dependence of relaxivity for silica-coated iron oxide nanoparticles

We investigate the particle size dependence of the relaxivity of hydrogen protons in an aqueous solution of iron oxide (Fe<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>4</SUB>) nanoparticles coated in silica for biocompatibility. The T<SUB>1</SUB> and T<SUB>2</SUB> relaxation times for various concentrations of silica-coated nanoparticles were determined by a magnetic resonance scanner. We find that the relaxivity increased linearly with increasing particle size. The T<SUB>2</SUB> relaxivity (R<SUB>2</SUB>) is more than 50 times larger than the T<SUB>1</SUB> relaxivity (R<SUB>1</SUB>) for the nanoparticle contrast agent, which reflects the fact that the T<SUB>2</SUB> relaxation is mainly influenced by outer sphere processes. The high R<SUB>2</SUB>/R<SUB>1</SUB> ratio demonstrates that silica-coated iron oxide nanoparticles may serve as a T<SUB>2</SUB> contrast agents in magnetic resonance imaging with high efficacy.

For the purpose of securing of strains which can be usefully utilized to study symbiosis between Rhizobium and legume plant, A. tumefaciens T7 was isolated and characterized and then subgroup biovar was determined. A. tumefaciens T7 induced smooth tumor like nopaline type one and did not grow at $37^{\circ}C$ and in the presence of 2% NaCl on yeast extract mannitol medium. The strain was able to grow on the New and Kerr selective media and utilize erythritol but not phenylalanine, tryptophan, and tartarate as a sole carbon source. Negative results were obtained from 3-keto-lactose production and oxidase test. The strain produced alkalifrom malonate and citrate and showed acid litmus milk reaction At least two large plasmids were detected in the cell lysate. According to all of these results, it could be concluded that subdivision of isolated strain was biovar 2.

<P>Spores of Alicyclobacillus acidoterrestris, a spoilage bacterium, cause problems for the apple juice industry because they are resistant to thermal treatment. Here, we examined the sporicidal effect of an ohmic heating (OH) system with five sequential electric fields and compared it with that of conventional heating. Apple juice product (50 kg) inoculated with A. acidoterrestris spores were subjected to OH (electric field strength = 26.7 V/cm; frequency 25 kHz) at 85-100 degrees C for 30-90 s. The effect of conventional heating was also examined under these conditions. OH treatment at 100 degrees C for 30 s resulted in total inactivation of the inoculum, with no recovery of viable cells (initial population = 4.8-4.9 log CFU/ml), whereas 3.6-4.9 log CFU/ml of the spores survived conventional heating. OH did not alter the quality ( Brix, color, and pH) of commercial apple juice (p> 0.05). These results suggest that the OH system is superior to conventional heating for rapid sterilization (30 s) of apple juice to assure microbiological quality in the absence of chemical additives. Hexafluoropropylene oxide(HFPO) is a representative oxygen-containing C₃ fluoromonomer, which enhances physical and chemical properties of fluoro copolymers. It is also essentially used for manufacturing fluorinated ion-exchange membranes such as Nafionⓡ. HFPO was successfully obtained from a liquid-phase epoxidation of hexafluoropropylene with active oxygen species such as NaOCl and H₂O₂. Addition of transition metal halides to the HFP epoxidation was revealed to appreciably enhance the yield of HFPO. Among the transition metal halides used, ferric chloride showed the highest catalytic activity in the epoxidation reactions with both NaOCl and H₂O₂.

To cope with an international technical development competition and maintain the continuous economic growth of our country, the role of Chungnam National University, which is sited in the Daedeok Science Town, is training available brains who can perform innovation technology through the triple cooperation of Industry-Institute-University. For this, we have studied the tendency and cooperation system of technical development of developed countries, and prepared the list of available manpower and facilities in the Daedeok Science Town. Also we have investigated the present status of Daejeon Industry -Complex. As a result, for continuous scientific and technical development of our industries, it is recommended that the Science Park, which is similar to Cambridge Science Park, should be build up in the Daedeok Science Town and positively drived the cooperation works of Industry-Institue-University.

Use of hexafluoropropylene oxide (HFPO) as a comonomer appreciably enhances physical and chemical properties of fluoropolymers. It is also essential to the preparation of fluorinated polyethers which are the major materials for manufacturing fluorinated ion-exchange membranes such as Nafion and Flemion. HFPO was successfully obtained from a liquid-phase epoxidation of hexafluoro propylene (HFP), which occurred in the surface interface between an aqueous hypochlorite and an organic solvent, 1,1,2-trichloro-1,2,2-trifluoroethane (F-113), containing HFP. Yield and production rate of HFPO increased along with the initial concentration of NaOCl. The yield of HFPO also changed with the ratio of NaOCl to F-113 and with types and concentrations of sulfactant.
