Purpose: Whether subtotal or total colectomy with primary anastomosis (PA) is safer than Hartmann procedure (HP) for left-sided colon cancer obstruction or perforation remains controversial. The purpose of this study was to compare postoperative morbidity, mortality, and defecation frequency between PA and HP for left-sided colon cancer obstruction or perforation. Methods: This retrospective study enrolled 54 patients from January 2014 to February 2018 who underwent emergency surgery due to left-sided colon cancer obstruction or perforation. Results: PA was carried out in 20 patients while HP was performed for 34 patients. Thirty-day mortality did not show significant difference between the two groups (15.0% vs. 14.7%, P=1.000). No anastomotic leakage occurred in PA group while three (8.8%) cases of stump leakage occurred in HP group. Stoma repair was performed for 13 cases (44.8%) and stoma reformation was performed for one case in HP group (7.7%). Stoma related complications occurred in five cases (17.24%). For patients after stoma repair, defecation frequency at 3 months after operation was 2.91±2.88 times per day in PA group and 2.86±2.63 times per day in HP group. At 1 year after operation, defecation frequency was changed to 1.40±1.12 times per day in PA group and 1.17±0.39 times per day in HP group. Conclusion: Primary ileosigmoid or ileorectal anastomosis for left-sided colon cancer obstruction or perforation is safe, and shows similar outcome of defecation frequency compared to H
New Record of Leucosiid Crab Nursia rhomboidalis (Crustacea: Decapoda: Brachyura) from Korea
Lee, Sang-Kyu,Song, Sung-Joon,Kim, Won The Korean Society of Systematic Zoology 2009 Animal Systematics, Evolution and Diversity Vol.25 No.3
The leucosiid crabs are common species on soft sediment from the intertidal flat to shelf and slope depths. The genus Nursia Leach, 1817 is characterized by the pentagonal shape of the carapace and the presence of the buccal cavern on the pterygostomian region. As a result of the systematic study on the Korean brachyuran species, Nursia rhomboidalis (Miers, 1879) is newly recorded in Korean fauna. Korean Leucosiidae is now composed of 14 species belonging to eight genera. The description and illustrations of this species are provided.
Combined Rotation and Advancement Flap Reconstruction for a Defect of the Upper Lip: 2 Cases
Lee, Jun-Sang,Oh, Suk-Joon,Jung, Sung-Won,Koh, Sung-Hoon Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surge 2012 Archives of Plastic Surgery Vol.39 No.3
Many types of upper lip reconstruction have been introduced to treat defects after a tumor excision or trauma. The authors treated two cases of upper lip defects. A 35-year-old woman presented with a squamous cell carcinoma of the left upper lip that had invaded the corner of the mouth. After resecting the tumor, the defect was $3.7{\times}3.5cm$ in size. A 52-year-old woman presented with a dog bite of the right upper lip. The defect measured $4.0{\times}2.2cm$ in size. The two cases were reconstructed by combined rotation and advancement of a cheek flap. This technique produced a good functional outcome that allowed for oral competence and created an opening of adequate size. A combination of rotation and an advancement flap can be used to treat upper lip defects in a single-stage procedure. This approach produces a good functional and cosmetic outcome.

Abstract

A comprehensive lipid analysis was performed at the plasma lipoprotein level in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and stable coronary artery disease (CAD). Because the lipids in lipoproteins are related to the pathology of the cardiovascular system, lipoprotein-specific lipid analysis can be useful for understanding the mechanism of lipid-associated cardiovascular diseases. Lipoproteins were size-sorted into high density lipoproteins (HDL) and low density lipoproteins (LDL) using asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation, then lipids of each lipoprotein were analysed using nanoflow ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry. A total of 365 lipids were structurally identified and quantified by selected reaction monitoring method. Two high abundance lysophosphatidylcholines (16:0 and 18:0) were significantly increased only in the HDL of the ACS group (vs. the stable CAD group). Phosphatidylethanolamines (38:5 and 40:5) significantly increased in ACS by >2-fold in both lipoproteins. (18:0, 22:6)-diacylglycerol increased in ACS by 3.5-fold only in LDL; however, most high abundance triacylglycerols decreased 2-fold in both lipoproteins. The present study revealed the usefulness of lipoprotein-specific analysis of lipids in distinguishing ACS from stable CAD, and the selected lipids analysed in this study may be useful in the development of lipid markers for the early detection of ACS.

Decision of Abnormal Quality Unit Lists from Claim Database
Lee, Sang-Hyun,Lee, Sang-Joon,Moon, Kyung-Li,Kim, Byung-Ki Korea Information Processing Society 2008 Journal of information processing systems Vol.4 No.3
Most enterprises have controlled claim data related to marketing, production, trade and delivery. They can extract the engineering information needed to the reliability of unit from the claim data, and also detect critical and latent reliability problems. Existing method which could detect abnormal quality unit lists in early stage from claim database has three problems: the exclusion of fallacy probability in claim, the false occurrence of claim fallacy alarm caused by not reflecting inventory information and too many excessive considerations of claim change factors. In this paper, we propose a process and methods extracting abnormal quality unit lists to solve three problems of existing method. Proposed one includes data extraction process for reliability measurement, the calculation method of claim fallacy alarm probability, the method for reflecting inventory time in calculating claim reliability and the method for identification of abnormal quality unit lists. This paper also shows that proposed mechanism could be effectively used after analyzing improved effects taken from automotive company's claim data adaptation for two years.
Lignin for white natural sunscreens
Lee, Sang Cheon,Tran, Thi Minh Thu,Choi, Joon Weon,Won, Keehoon Elsevier 2019 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF BIOLOGICAL MACROMOLECULES Vol.122 No.-

Abstract

Long-time exposure to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation is harmful and causes various skin problems. Natural sun blockers have been drawing considerable attention recently. Even though lignin, an abundant aromatic polymer from plants, is a natural UV screening agent, its unfavorable dark color hinders its high value-added applications in sunscreens and cosmetics. In this study, we separate lignin under mild conditions (at room temperature with neutral solvents) in order to prevent darkening occurring during delignification and apply the resultant lignin as a natural sunscreen ingredient for the first time. Lignins isolated from Miscanthus sacchariflorus (MWL-M) and from Pinus densiflora (MWL-P) are compared with organosolv lignin (OL), which showed the best sunscreen performance, in color and UV protection. MWLs separated under mild conditions were light in color unlike conventional lignins extracted under harsh conditions. UV absorption of light-colored MWL-M was revealed to be as high as dark-colored OL. MWLs also showed synergistic effects with a commercial sunscreen; exposure of the MWL-added sunscreen to UVA radiation greatly enhanced the sun protection factor (SPF) value of the sunscreen.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]

Association of Insulin Receptor Substrate-1 G972R Variant with Non-small Cell Lung Cancer Risk
Lee, Chang Youl,Ahn, Chul Min,Jeon, Jeong Hee,Kim, Hyung Jung,Kim, Se Kyu,Chang, Joon,Kim, Sung Kyu,Chang, Yoon Soo The Korean Academy of Tuberculosis and Respiratory 2009 Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases Vol.67 No.1
Background: The insulin receptor substrate-1 (IRS-1) is the primary docking molecule for the insulin-like growth factor I receptor (IGF-IR), and is required for activation of the phosphatidylinositol 3'-kinase (PI3K) pathway. IRS-1 activation of the (PI3K) pathway regulates IGF-mediated survival, enhancement of cellular motility and apoptosis. Therefore, we attempted to ascertain whether IRS-1 genetic variations affect an individual's risk for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods: Two-hundred and eighteen subjects, either diagnosed with NSCLC or control subjects, were matched by age, gender and smoking status. Genomic DNA from each subject was amplified by PCR and analyzed according to the restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) profile to detect the IRS-1 G972R polymorphism. Results: The frequencies of each polymorphic variation, in the control population, were as follows: GG=103 (94.5%) and GR=6 (5.5%); for the NSCLC subjects, the genotypic frequencies were as follows: GG=106 (97.2%) and GR=3 (2.8%). We could not demonstrate statistically significant differences in the genotypic distribution between the NSCLC and the control subjects (p=0.499, Fisher's Exact test). The relative risk of NSCLC, associated with the IRS-1 G972R polymorphic variation, was 1.028 (95% CI; 0.63~9.90). In addition, we found no differences between polymorphic variants with regard to the histological subtype of NSCLC. Conclusion: We did not observe any noteworthy differences in the frequency of the IRS-1 G972R polymorphism in NSCLC patients, compared to control subjects. These results suggest suggesting that, in our study population, the IRS-1 G972R polymorphism does may not appear to be associated with an increased risk of NSCLC.
