        Background : In recent years, gonorrhea has been panedemic and remains one of the most commom STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. Objective & Methods: For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of PPNG, we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the VD Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by means of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. Results: In 1996, 139 strains of N. gonorrhoeae were isolated, among which 53(39.0%) were PPNG. Conclusion: Our results suggests that after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, the prevalence of PPNG in Seoul is gradually declining.

        兒童行動目錄(CBCL)에 의한 國民學生의 行動問題 調査

        This is an epidemiological study of emotional/behavior problems in Korean elementary school children(total 2,399 : 1.236 boys, 1,163 girls) by empolying Children's Behavior Check List(CBCL) developed by Achenbach and Edelbrock(1983), to which 3 problem items were added for this study. A test-retest reliability of CBCL was was assessed by computing the Spearman-Browm correlation and the average correlation among items was. 72. The interparent agreeement was also assessed and the average correaltion between mother and father was. 62. The study subjects were drawm by stratified sampling from 5 schools in Korea ; 3 schools (A, B, C) from Seoul, one school(D) from a medium size city one school (E) from a rural town. School C is located in upper/middle-upper class residential area, School A and D in middle class, and School B and E in lower-middle/lower class. The present paper reports the prevalence of behavioral/emotional problems in relation to sex, grade, locality and socioeconomic variables. Some of the major findings were as follows ; 1) The mean total problem score excluding 3 additional items was 27.28 and did not differ significanthy according to sex and locality(Seoul vs non-Seoul), However, the mean total problem scores were significanthy different from school to school. The lowest score was observed in children of School C(22.15), higher scores for School B(30.89) and E(30.64) and in-between scores for the School A(27.58) and D(25.47). Father's education also had significant effect on the total problem scores : 31.46 for elementary of less 27.79 for middle and high school and 23.05 for college or more. As for to the grade, mean total score was lowest for the first graders(22.12), increasing up until 4th grade(29.83), then decreasing for 5th graders(26.81) and then relatively high score for the 6th graders(29.81). 2) Examination of each 122 problem items revealed that prevalence rate ranged from 2.1% to 61.7% : less than 5% for 13% items, 5-10% for 18 items, 10-20% for 31 items, 20-30% for 25 items, 30-40% for 15 items, 40-50% for 13 items, more than 50% for 7 items. Although sex did not make any difference in total problem scores, examination of the prevalence of each item revealed that 47 problem items were significanthy different between sexes : 26 items were more prevalent in boys and 21 items in girls. The items more prevalent for boys were externalizing problems such as hyperkinetic, aggressive and other behaviors and 21 items, more prevalent for girls were internalizing problems such as emotional and psychosomatic problems. School grade had significant effect in 47 items, only 3 of which showed lower prevalence in the younger children and the prevalence of 39 items were higher in older children. Significant differences were observed in 83 items, and 94 items, respectively according to school and father's education that could be considered to reflect socioeconomic status and it was reavealed that the lower the status, the higher the prevalence in most items. Items more common in upper class tend to be more anxiety-tension related(internalizing) and items more common in lower class tend to be more aggressive, hyperactive and other behavioval problems(externalizing). 3) Brief cross-cultural comparisons between the current study and other studies reported in the literature revealed major differences in several areas. The total problem score for Korean children was much higher than those of American and Dutch children, but lower than those of Canada and Chile. Although most of other studies reported higher total problem scores for boys, than for girls there was no sex difference in total problem score for Korean children. This was reflected in the finding of an almost equal numbers of items(26 for boys, 21 for girls) being more common than the other sex. Analyses by grade(age) also indicate major differences between Korean and American-Dutch children ; In contrast to the finding that total problem score was higher and larger number of items were more common for younger children in American and Dutch studies, they were higher for older children in Korean study. Socioeconomic variables seems to exert far more significant effect on the total score and the prevalence of each items in Korean study, when compared with American and Dutch studies. Further analyses of the data including a comparison with a clinic sample are deferred to another paper and so are the factor analysis results of 122 items into emotional/behavioral syndromes.

        Normalization of Tumor Vessels by Tie2 Activation and Ang2 Inhibition Enhances Drug Delivery and Produces a Favorable Tumor Microenvironment

        <P><B>Summary</B></P> <P>A destabilized tumor vasculature leads to limited drug delivery, hypoxia, detrimental tumor microenvironment, and even metastasis. We performed a side-by-side comparison of ABTAA (Ang2-Binding and Tie2-Activating Antibody) and ABA (Ang2-Blocking Antibody) in mice with orthotopically implanted glioma, with subcutaneously implanted Lewis lung carcinoma, and with spontaneous mammary cancer. We found that Tie2 activation induced tumor vascular normalization, leading to enhanced blood perfusion and chemotherapeutic drug delivery, markedly lessened lactate acidosis, and reduced tumor growth and metastasis. Moreover, ABTAA favorably altered the immune cell profile within tumors.       • Haplotye analysis and functional study of badh2, a gene responsible for fragrance in aromatic rice

        2-acetyl-1-pyrroline (2AP) was widely known as the principal aroma compound, it development in rice has been reported due to the loss of function of betaine aldehyde dehydrogenase gene (badh2) on chromosome 8. In previous study, a lot of haplotypes have been found of this gene, while only limited haplotypes have been proved as functional mutations. A total of 137 core set accessions, and additional 45 germplasms have been employed in this study. Finally, two new mutations have been found (3bp deletion in exon12 and C/A SNP in exon 10), and 23 haplotypes have been detected, most of them had strong relations with aroma formation. According to the sequence results, five functional markers have been developed, the markers showed a highly efficient in discriminating the special aromatic rice varieties, and displayed perfect co-segregation with the trait of fragrance in F2 population. Those new markers developed in the present study would be useful in molecular breeding of fragrant rice varieties. Based on the haplotypes, the further research is in progress.

        <P>Isocitrate dehydrogenase mutations with neomorphic activity of converting α-ketoglutarate to 2-hydroxyglutarate have been found in many types of cancers. We report an NMR-based assay specific for the mutant using <SUP>13</SUP>C<SUB>4</SUB>-labeled α-ketoglutarate. It can be done in a complex mixture without extraction, give time-dependent absolute quantitation, and be applied to enzyme inhibition studies.         초고압 추출 처리에 의한 더덕 및 발효더덕의 항산화 증진

        본 연구에서는 초고압 추출공정을 이용하여 전통적인 기존 추출공정과 비교함으로써 초고압 추출공정에 의한 등급 외 더덕 및 발효더덕의 항산화 활성의 증진을 확인하고자 연구를 수행하였다. 총 페놀화합물 함량은 초고압 발효더덕 추출물이 35.11 ㎎/100 g으로 초고압 더덕 추출물 14.78 ㎎/100 g, 일반더덕 추출물 14.56 ㎎/100 g에 비해 총 페놀 화합물 함량이 약 2배 이상 높은 수치를 나타내었다. 또한, 플라보노이드 함량은 페놀화합물과 유사한 경향으로 초고압 발효더덕 추출물이 280.86 ㎎/100 g으로 초고압 더덕 추출물의 198.35 ㎎/100 g과 일반더덕 추출물 193.05 ㎎/100 g에 비해 약 1.4배 정도 높은 함량을 나타내었다. 항산화도는 초고압 발효더덕 추출물의 경우 0.6 ㎎/mL에서 약 70%의 항산화도를 나타내었으며, 이 값은 초고압 더덕 추출물 60.35%와 일반더덕 추출물 30.92%보다 높은 항산화도를 나타내었다. 초고압 발효더덕 추출물의 환원력은 최종 농도 1.0 ㎎/mL에서 일반더덕의 경우 0.733, 초고압 더덕 추출물의 경우 0.881, 초고압 발효더덕 추출물의 경우 0.926으로서 초고압 발효더덕 추출물의 환원력이 다른 추출물보다 약 0.193까지 높은 결과를 나타내었다. 따라서 초고압 추출공정이 등급 외 더덕 및 발효더덕의 기능성을 증가시킬 수 있으며, 초고압 추출공정의 최적화를 통한 활성물질의 추출 극대화를 통해 높은 경제적 가치를 부여해 줄 수 있을것으로 사료된다. This study was designed to evaluate antioxidant activity of low-quality Codonopsis lanceolata treated by fermentation process followed by hydraulic high pressure extraction. C. lanceolata was subjected to 5,000 bar for 30 min at 25℃. The highest phenolics content was observed in the combined treatment of fermentation and high pressure extraction (35.11 ㎎/100 g), followed by high pressure extraction alone (14.78 ㎎/100 g) and conventional extraction (14.56 ㎎/100 g). The content of flavonoids followed the similar pattern as that of total phenolics, showing 280.86 ㎎/100 g of C. lanceolata treated by the combined fermentation with high pressure extraction whereas 193.05 ㎎/100 g of C. lanceolata treated by the conventional extraction. The DPPH scavenging activity was 69.32% at 0.6 ㎎/mL of C. lanceolata treated by the combined process, while the DPPH scavenging activities of C. lanceolata treated by high pressure extraction alone and the conventional extraction were 60.35% and 30.92%, respectively. The highest reducing power of C. lanceolata extract (1.0 ㎎/mL) was observed at the combined treatment (0.926), followed by high pressure extraction alone (0.881) and the conventional extraction (0.733). The combination of fermentation with high pressure extraction significantly increased the contents of phenolics and flavonoids and also enhanced the antioxidant activity. Therefore, the combined application of fermentation and high pressure extraction can be an alternative technique for the extraction of C. lanceolata. These results provide useful information for enhancing biological properties of low-quality C. lanceolata.
