A New Sesame Variety, “Kangbaek” with Disease Resistance, Lodging Tolerence and High Yield

A new sesame variety Kangbaek was developed from Yeongnam Agricultural Research Institute in 2004. Cros wasmade by lodging resistant SP9003-3 line to the F1with high yielding capacity, folowed by pedigree selection, yield test and RYT by the sesame breeding team at the National Insti-tute of Crop Science up to 2003. The variety showed higher disease resistance, especially phytophothra disease, and lodging resis-respectively. It's 1000 grains weight was about 2.54 g indicating 0.03 g heavier than that of Yangbaekkae, and it's oil content wasabout 52%. Kangbaek also contained total 7.65mg/g of such lignans as sesamin and sesamolin. The average yield of Kang-baek was 82 kg per 10a at the national-wide regional performance.
Induction of heme oxygenase-1 protects against podocyte apoptosis under diabetic conditions

Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) is an anti-oxidant enzyme normally upregulated in response to oxidant injury. Here we determined the role of HO-1 in podocyte apoptosis in glomeruli of streptozotocin-treated rats and in immortalized mouse podocytes cultured in media containing normal or high glucose. HO-1 expression, its activity, the ratio of Bax/Bcl-2 protein, and active caspase-3 fragments were all significantly higher in isolated glomeruli of diabetic rats and in high glucose–treated podocytes. These increases were inhibited by zinc protoporphyrin treatment of the rats or by HO-1 siRNA treatment of the podocytes in culture. The number of apoptotic cells was also significantly increased in the glomeruli of diabetic rats and in high glucose–treated podocytes. Inhibition of HO-1 accentuated the increase in apoptotic cells both in vivo and in vitro. Our findings suggest that HO-1 expression protects against podocyte apoptosis under diabetic conditions.

(+)-Aspicilin은 Lecanora속에 속하는 lichen에서 분리된 거대고리락톤계 항생물질이다. 본 연구에서는 이를 비대칭적으로 합성하기 위해 두 부분의 합성 중간체인 벤질 5-데옥시-2, 3-0-이소프로필리덴-6-요드-α-D-만노시드와 (S)-(+)-9-데신-2-올을 각각 합성하였다. We have studied the synthesis of (+)-aspicilin, a macrolactonic substance which is isolated from a lichen source of the Black forest. As building blocks for enantiocontrolled synthesis of (+) -aspicilin, benzyl 5-deoxy-2. 3-0-isopropylidene-6-iodo-α-Dmannofuranoside and (S)-(+)-9-decyn-2-ol were synthesized.

천연물 합성에서 출발물질로 유용하게 쓰이는 디아세톤 글루코스 헥소퓨라노스고리의 산화와 입체선택적 변형에 관하여 연구하였다. 이 고리의 C-3위치에 있는 히드록시기를 Trifluoroacetic anhydride(TFAA)로 사용하여 케토기로 산화시키는 방법을 연구한 후 얻어진 C-3 위치에 케톤에 대해 Grignard반응과 Wittig반응을 도입하여 퓨라노스고리의 C-3위치에 입체 선택적으로 치환기를 유도하는 방법을 연구하였다. 또한 고리밖의 곁가지의 변형도 아울러 연구하였다. We have studied on the oxidation and the stereoselective modifications of the hexofuranose ring derived from diacetone glucose. We have attempted the method of the oxidation with trifluoroacetic anhydride (TFAA) on the C-3 position of this furanose ring. On the other hand, we have induced the stereoselective substrate on the keto group of the C-3 position. The modifications of the side chain out of the ring have been also studied.

Optical measurements of particle size, its distribution, concentration, and velocity in the particulate handling processes are of great significance in recent years. The 2-dimensional optical images observed provide, with little precision, the particle characteristics in the 3-dimensional space of the volume element, in which the particle concentratioin plays a remarkable role in data acquisition of particle size concerned. Geometrical relationships between the 3-dimensional volume concentration and the 2-dimensional photographic obscuration are mathematically discussed, and the concentration criteria of the possible observation range to be applicable in particle characterization are experimentally determined. Above 5% of particle concentration in volume, the photographic images do not provide any sufficient results in the particle size measurement by the optical method.

In order to study the flow characteristics of spherical glass-beads ranging from 40 mesh to-115 mesh, its angle of repose and angle of rupture were measured as a function of average particle size, addition of fine powder as glidant or lubricant, and admixture of 2 or 3 adjacent fractions of beads classified by screening. The angle of repose of the glass-beads increases with increasing particle size of above 100 mesh, but for beads smaller than 100 mesh, the angle of repose increases with decreasing particle size. Fine glidant of montmorcalite added to the beads in very small concentrations of 0.6wt, % decreases the flow angles, while it tends to increase strongly the flow angles at higher concentrations.

The commercially available nonwoven fibrous filter mats are used to collect the CaCO₃sample dust from the air stream. The collection efficiency and the grade efficiency in the air filtration are experimentally determined and compared with the analogous results calculated by the theoretical equations proposed by other researchers. The pressure drop measured across the filter mat is also discussed with the theoretically estimated one. The comparison between the two results are in a good agreement with each other. Effects of the fibre diameter and the inlet air velocity on the separation efficiency and on the pressure drop are also discussed.

The effect of chemical reaction of carbon dioxide with aqueous calcium hydroxide on the particle size distribution of calcium carbonate products has been examined at reaction temperature range of 30°to 70℃, by varying reaction time from 25min to 70min. The particle size distributions of the reaction products obtained were compared by using 4 different instruments, i.e. image analyzer, Coulter counter, Microtrac and Elzone PSA. At 25min, of reaction time and 70℃ of reaction temperature the smallest average size of the precipitated CaCO₃could be achieved.

The nitrite content, VBN(volatile basic nitrogen) and bacterial count in pork sausage stored at various temperatures were examined for the evaluation hygienic condition of meat products. 1.Nitrite content of pork sausage was decreased from 3.1ppm to 2.2ppm in 25 days at 7℃, from 3.1ppm to 0.8ppm in 5 days at 25℃, and from 3.1ppm to 0.4ppm in 5 days at 36℃, respectively. 2.Nitrite content of pork sausage in which potassium nitrite was added was, however, increased from 3.1ppm to the maximum amounts of 15.2ppm, 118.3ppm and 97.6ppm when kept for 35 days at 7℃, 30 clays at 25℃ and 26 days at 36℃, respectively. 3.Content of VNB of pork sausage with potassium nitrate was increased from 11mg% to 40mg% after the storage for both 35 days at 7℃, 5 days at 25℃ and 5 days at 36℃. The bacterial counts of the pork sausage of 7˚, 25˚ and 36℃ groups were increased from 103 to 104,109 anti 109, respectively.
