      • Metal Injection Moulding of Duplex Stainless Steels

        Sotomayor M. E.,Varez A.,Levenfeld B. 한국분말야금학회 2006 한국분말야금학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2006 No.1

In this communication the development of a new metal injection moulding (MIM) system for duplex stainless steels is presented. The metal powders were prepared by premixing 316L and 430L stainless steels gas atomised powders in a ratio of 50:50. The binder used to prepare the feedstock was composed by HDPE and paraffin wax. Torque measurements of the mixture indicated that the maximum amount of metal was 68 vol%. The polymeric part was driven off by thermal debinding and the sintering was performed in low vacuum. The final densities were close to the theoretical ones.

Effect of the Application of Microorganisms on the Nutrient Absorption in Avocado (Persea americana Mill.) Seedlings

        Andrea Sotomayor,Antonio Gonzáles,Kang Jin Cho,Alicia Villavicencio,Trevor Jackson,William Viera 한국국제농업개발학회 2019 韓國國際農業開發學會誌 Vol.31 No.1

Avocado is a fruit crop of high economic importance for Ecuador, both locally and for exportation. Fuerte and Hass varieties are cultivated, both of which are grafted onto rootstocks from the cultivar Criollo. The growth of rootstocks in the nursery is a critical stage in the production of avocado plants, and application of beneficial microorganisms could be used to improve plant nutrition and growth of the rootstocks. In this research, the effect of inoculation of Trichoderma harzianum or Glomus iranicum var. tenuihypharum on avocado rootstock seedlings (cultivar Criollo) was evaluated. Application of T. harzianum significantly increased the absorption of N5+ and Mg2+ in the roots; while in the aerial parts (leaves and stem), it increased the absorption of N5+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Mn2+ and Cu2+. On the other hand, G. iranicum var. tenuihypharum significantly increased the absorption of Ca2+ and Fe3+ in the root; but no major effect was observed in the aerial part. However, a positive tendency toward an increase in the amount of P5+ was observed in the root; while in the aerial part this trend was observed for N3- and Ca2+ absorption. Neither of the two microorganisms influenced the absorption of S4+, an element that was present at stable levels in the whole plant. In conclusion, the applied microorganisms produced an increase in absorption of several macro and micronutrient in Criollo avocado rootstock seedlings.

Decreased Esophageal Sensitivity to Acid in Morbidly Obese Patients: A Cause for Concern?

        ( Vicente Ortiz ),( Diego Alvarez-sotomayor ),( Esteban Saez-gonzalez ),( Francia Carolina Diaz-jaime ),( Marisa Iborra ),( Julio Ponce ),( Vicente Garrigues ) 대한간학회 2017 Gut and Liver Vol.11 No.3

Background/Aims: To evaluate esophageal sensitivity to acid between morbidly obese (MO) patients and non-MO controls with abnormal esophageal acid exposure. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 58 patients: 30 MO (cases) and 28 non-MO (controls). Esophageal symptoms and esophageal sensitivity to 0.1 M hydrochloric acid solution (Bernstein test) were compared between MO and non- MO patients with a prior diagnosis of abnormal esophageal acid exposure. Results: MO patients were less symptomatic than non-MO controls (14% vs 96%; odds ratio [OR], 0.006; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.001 to 0.075; p=0.000). MO patients were more likely to present with decreased esophageal sensitivity to the instillation of acid than non-MO controls (57% vs 14%; OR, 8; 95% CI, 1.79 to 35.74; p=0.009). Subgroup analysis revealed no differences in esophageal sensitivity in MO patients with and without abnormal esophageal acid exposure (43% vs 31%; p=0.707). Conclusions: Silent gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is common among MO individuals, likely due to decreased esophageal sensitivity to acid. The absence of typical GERD symptoms in these patients may delay discovery of precancerous conditions, such as Barrett`s esophagus. We believe that these patients may require a more aggressive diagnostic work-up to rule out the presence of silent GERD. (Gut Liver 2017;11:358-362)

Measurement of Inequality-Adjusted Human Development at the Sub-National Level for the United States in 2015 And 2020

PARKER HOWELL,MARITZA SOTOMAYOR 중앙대학교 경제연구소 2023 Journal of Economic Development Vol.48 No.3

The search for an alternative indicator for the GDP led to the spread of composite indexes in recent decades. Among the indicators that demonstrated qualities for reliable measurement of the population’s well-being is the Human Development Index (HDI) by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in 1990. One of the HDI’s shortcomings was not considering inequality’s differences in its three metrics (health, education, and income). The UNDP’s inequality-adjusted HDI (IHDI) solved this problem, becoming an indicator of the actual status of the population’s well-being. The program publishes the IHDI at the country level; however, there are no estimates at the sub-national level for the United States. This paper estimates the IHDI at the state and county levels for 2015 and 2020. The estimates contribute to the empirical evidence since no such calculations exist at this level of disaggregation. Our work confirms regional disparities when the HDI is adjusted for inequality.

      • Histone deacetylase 11: A novel epigenetic regulator of myeloid derived suppressor cell expansion and function

        Sahakian, E.,Powers, J.J.,Chen, J.,Deng, S.L.,Cheng, F.,Distler, A.,Woods, D.M.,Rock-Klotz, J.,Sodre, A.L.,Youn, J.I.,Woan, K.V.,Villagra, A.,Gabrilovich, D.,Sotomayor, E.M.,Pinilla-Ibarz, J. Pergamon Press 2015 Molecular immunology Vol.63 No.2

Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs), a heterogeneous population of cells capable of suppressing anti-tumor T cell function in the tumor microenvironment, represent an imposing obstacle in the development of cancer immunotherapeutics. Thus, identifying elements essential to the development and perpetuation of these cells will undoubtedly improve our ability to circumvent their suppressive impact. HDAC11 has emerged as a key regulator of IL-10 gene expression in myeloid cells, suggesting that this may represent an important targetable axis through which to dampen MDSC formation. Using a murine transgenic reporter model system where eGFP expression is controlled by the HDAC11 promoter (Tg-HDAC11-eGFP), we provide evidence that HDAC11 appears to function as a negative regulator of MDSC expansion/function in vivo. MDSCs isolated from EL4 tumor-bearing Tg-HDAC11-eGFP display high expression of eGFP, indicative of HDAC11 transcriptional activation at steady state. In striking contrast, immature myeloid cells in tumor-bearing mice display a diminished eGFP expression, implying that the transition of IMC to MDSC's require a decrease in the expression of HDAC11, where we postulate that it acts as a gate-keeper of myeloid differentiation. Indeed, tumor-bearing HDAC11-knockout mice (HDAC11-KO) demonstrate a more suppressive MDSC population as compared to wild-type (WT) tumor-bearing control. Notably, the HDAC11-KO tumor-bearing mice exhibit enhanced tumor growth kinetics when compare to the WT control mice. Thus, through a better understanding of this previously unknown role of HDAC11 in MDSC expansion and function, rational development of targeted epigenetic modifiers may allow us to thwart a powerful barrier to efficacious immunotherapies.
