The performance evaluation of Internet traffics has been performed by factors such as RTT and packet loss. This individual evaluation method has some difficulties in determining service quality due to interoperations between those factors. This paper presents a hybrid performance evaluation formula for TCP traffics, which uses both RTT and packet loss. The formula has been defined by an interpretation model, which is derived from a TCP throughtput rate in congestion environment and a packet retransmission mechanism. The proposed formula has been applied to a data set collected from the KREN performance measure, and then has been shown to easily determine TCP performance variations. Thus, the proposed scheme can be used for a SLA monitoring system.

Atmospheric particulate matters were collected by 8-stage non viable cascade impactor from October 2002 to August at Jeju City. Eight water-soluble ionic components (Na^(+), NH₄^(+), K^(+), Ca^(2+), Mg^(2+), Cr^(-) NO₃^(-) and SO₄^(2-)) were analyzed by Ion Chromatography. The concentration of particulate matters and eight water-soluble ionic components were determined to investigate their size distributions. Particulate matters exhibited a tri-modal distribution with peak value around 0.9, 4.0㎛ and 9.5㎛. In summer, the last peak value was lower than other season values likely due to particulate matter scavenged by rain water. Four ionic components (Na^(+), Ca^(2+) Mg^(2+) and Cl^(-)) exhibited a bi-modal distribution in the coarse mode whereas three ionic components (NH₄^(+), K^(+) and SO₄^(2-)) in the fine mode, with maximum peak value around 0.9um. NO₃ was found in both the coarse and the fine mode. The enrichment factor (E.F.) of each ionic components was calculated. Based upon E.F., it is considered that Na^(+), Cr, and K^(+) in coarse paricle mode were delivered form oceanic source, but other components might have other source origins.

Study Design : Two patients who had painful Schmorl's node at thoracic level from acute trauma were adopted and taken operation for its treatment Objectives : To document the effect of operation for the treatment of painful Schmorl's node at thoracic level summary of background data : Schrmorl's nodes are common spinal lesion generally believed to be asymptomatic, but in some cases there were painful symptom by Schmorl's node. This case report is to explain the effect of operative treatment for the painful Schmorl's node. Methods : Two patients were adopted who had traumatic painful Schmorl's node at thoracic level for our case report. They were treated conservative methods at first but it's effect were poor, so they were taken anterior decompression and fusion, and checked back pain symptom. Result : In all two patients, the symptom of back pain by Schmorl's nodes at thoracic level was almost subsided. conclusion : For the treatment of traumatic painful Schmorl's node, most of surgeon says that conservative treatments were treatment of choice, but operative treatments are also benefit to subsidence of back pain by Schmorl's node.
THERMAL-HYDRAULIC TESTS AND ANALYSES FOR THE APR1400'S DEVELOPMENT AND LICENSING

The program on thermal-hydraulic evaluation by testing and analysis (THETA) for the development and licensing of the new design features in the APR1400 (Advanced Power Reactor-1400) is briefly introduced with a presentation on the research motivation and typical results of the separate effect tests and analyses of the major design features. The first part deals with multi-dimensional phenomena related to the safety analysis of the APR1400. One research area is related to the multidimensional behavior of the safety injection (SI) water in a reactor pressure vessel downcomer that uses a direct vessel injection type of SI system. The other area is associated with the condensation of steam jets and the resultant thermal mixing in a water pool; these phenomena are relevant to the depressurization of a reactor coolant system (RCS). The second part describes our efforts to develop new components for safety enhancements, such as a fluidic device as a passive SI flow controller and a sparger to depressurize the RCS. This work contributes to an understanding of the new thermal-hydraulic phenomena that are relevant to advanced reactor system designs; it also improves the prediction capabilities of analysis tools for multi-dimensional flow behavior, especially in complicated geometries.
ATLAS program for advanced thermal-hydraulic safety research

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>This paper highlights the major achievements of the ATLAS program, which is an integral effect test program for both developing advanced light water reactor technologies and contributing to enhancing nuclear safety. The ATLAS program is closely related with the development of the APR1400 and APR<SUP>+</SUP> reactors, and the SPACE code, which is a best-estimate system-scale code for a safety analysis of nuclear reactors. The multiple roles of ATLAS testing are emphasized in very close conjunction with the development, licensing, and commercial deployment of these reactors and their safety analysis codes. The role of ATLAS for nuclear safety enhancement is also introduced by taking some examples of its contributions to voluntarily lead to multi-body cooperative programs such as domestic and international standard problems. Finally, a future plan for the utilization of ATLAS testing is introduced, which aims at tackling recently emerging safety issues such as a prolonged station blackout accident and medium-size break LOCA, and some generic thermal-hydraulic concerns as to how to figure out multi-dimensional phenomena and the scaling issue.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Major achievements of the ATLAS program are highlighted in conjunction with both developing advanced light water reactor technologies and enhancing the nuclear safety. </LI> <LI> The ATLAS data was shown to be useful for the development and licensing of new reactors and safety analysis codes, and also for nuclear safety enhancement through domestic and international cooperative programs. </LI> <LI> A future plan for the ATLAS testing is introduced, covering recently emerging safety issues and some generic thermal-hydraulic concerns. </LI> </UL> </P>

<P>Glycogen serves as major energy storage in most living organisms. GlgX, with its gene in the glycogen degradation operon, functions in glycogen catabolism by selectively catalyzing the debranching of polysaccharide outer chains in bacterial glycosynthesis. GlgX hydrolyzes α-1,6-glycosidic linkages of phosphorylase-limit dextrin containing only three or four glucose subunits produced by glycogen phosphorylase. To understand its mechanism and unique substrate specificity toward short branched α-polyglucans, we determined the structure of GlgX from Escherichia Coli K12 at 2.25 Å resolution. The structure reveals a monomer consisting of three major domains with high structural similarity to the subunit of TreX, the oligomeric bifunctional glycogen debranching enzyme (GDE) from Sulfolobus. In the overlapping substrate binding groove, conserved residues Leu270, Asp271, and Pro208 block the cleft, yielding a shorter narrow GlgX cleft compared to that of TreX. Residues 207–213 form a unique helical conformation that is observed in both GlgX and TreX, possibly distinguishing GDEs from isoamylases and pullulanases. The structural feature observed at the substrate binding groove provides a molecular explanation for the unique substrate specificity of GlgX for G4 phosphorylase-limit dextrin and the discriminative activity of TreX and GlgX toward substrates of varying lengths.
