Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is a rare demyelinating disease of the central nervous system that is thought to be caused by an abnormal immune response as a result of an infection or a vaccination. ADEM as a complication of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) has not been proven in the literature. Herein, we present an unusual case of 17-year-old girl who developed ADEM after enterovirus infection as a fi rst manifestation of SLE. A 17-year-old Asian girl was admitted to the hospital with severe headache and double vision for a week. Ten days prior to admission, she had suffered from abdominal pain and diarrhea after traveling to the seaside. On admission, she was somewhat lethargic with a temperature of 37. 8℃. Cerebrospinal fi uid analysis showed unremarkable fi ndings and negative results for microorganism. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed multifocal hyperintensity lesions in both basal ganglia, right thalamus, midbrain, pons, cortical and subcortical regions of both cerebellum (figure). Serum neutralizing antibody titer of 1:64 against enterovirus 71 was observed. On hospital day 3, vasculitic rash appeared on both palms and arthralgia of the left ankle occurred. Laboratory fi ndings showed leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, hypocomplementemia, and proteinuria. The autoimmune profi le demonstrated positive antinuclear antibody (1:1280, speckled pattern), positive anti-double-stranded DNA antibody, and positive anti-SSA/anti-Ro antibody. Lupus anticoagulant and anti-cardiolipin antibodies (IgG, IgM) were also present while there were no clinical signs of arterial or venous thrombosis. We diagnosed SLE presenting with ADEM associated with enterovirus infection as an initial manifestation. After steroid and cyclophosphamidepulse therapy, brain MRI revealed nearly complete resolution of most of high signal intensity lesions. In conclusion, this case suggests that ADEM after enterovirus infection may arises, although rarely, as a fi rst manifestation of SLE.

CAD/CAM technology is increasingly being used for the fabrication of various prostheses. Digitized attempts are also underway for both removable partial dentures as well as fixed partial dentures. Conventional methods to fabricate removable partial denture require innumerable laboratory procedures, such as impression, surveying, blockout, making fire model, and wax-up. In this paper, we demonstrate the process using electronic surveying and blockout in Sensable`s intellifitTM Digital restoration system, and zirconia surveyed crown and framework fabrication through the digital process. The clinical application of digital systems in the dental field is expected to increase with the advancement and development of technology in the near future.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Normally-off AlGaN/GaN-based MOS-HEMT has been fabricated by utilizing damage-free self-terminating tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide (TMAH) recess etching. The device exhibited a threshold voltage of +2.0 V with good uniformity, extremely small hysteresis of ∼20 mV, and maximum drain current of 210 mA/mm. The device also exhibited excellent off-state performances, such as breakdown voltage of ∼800 V with off-state leakage current as low as ∼10−12 A and high on/off current ratio (Ion/Ioff) of 1010. These excellent device performances are believed to be due to the high quality recessed surface, provided by the simple self-terminating TMAH etching.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Normally-off was achieved by self-terminating TMAH wet etching. </LI> <LI> Hysteresis of threshold voltage was smaller than 50 mV. </LI> <LI> Self-terminating recess showed good distribution of threshold voltage for 30 devices. </LI> </UL> </P>

Bi2O3 buffer layers were deposited on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates by an R.F. magnetron sputtering method in order to improve the ferroelectric properties of SBT (SrBi2Ta2O9) thin films. The volatility of bismuth brings about an obvious non-stoichiometry of the SBT thin films and causes secondary phases to appear. The Bi2O3 buffer layers were found effective in achieving a lower crystallization temperature and in interrupting the diffusion of Pt towards SBT thin films. In this experiment, we have found that the presence of Bi2O3 buffer layers was responsible for the enhanced ferroelectric properties and crytallinities of SBT thin films. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-encoded small non-coding RNAs (EBERs) are abundantly expressed in various EBV-associated malignancies, and play critical roles in cell proliferation, tumorigenesis, and apoptosis resistance. However, the mechanism how EBERs regulate cell function awaits further clarification. In this study, we investigated the effect of EBERs on the expression of cellular microRNA (miRNA) and mRNA expression. To test the effect of EBERs while unaffected by other EBV genes, we used EBERs-deleted recombinant EBV infected Burkitt's lymphoma cell line (Akata(+)EBERs(-)) as well as EBV-infected (Akata(+)) and EBV uninfected (Akata(-)) cell lines. They all have the same genetic backgrounds. First, 15 different cellular miRNAs which have reverse complementary sequences to EBERs and have reported targets were selected by bioinformatics analysis. When RT-PCR was carried out for the 16 miRNAs using RNAs from Akata(+), Akata(-), and Akata(+)EBERs(-) cells, hsa-miR-7-5p was the only one showing down-regulated expression in Akata(+) than in Akata(-) and Akata(+)EBERs(-) cells. Bioinformatics and mRNA microarray analyses for Akata(+), Akata(-), and Akata(+)EBERs(-) cell lines were then carried out to predict putative targets of hsa-miR-7-5p. Among the 6 predicted targets of hsa-miR-7-5p, only low density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 6 (LRP6) was up-regulated in EBERs-expressing cells when tested by RT-PCR and Western blot. However, luciferase reporter assay showed that the 3'-UTR of LRP6 was not directly targeted by hsa-miR-7-5p. Our data suggest that both hsa-miR-7-5p and LRP6 are regulated by EBERs in Akata cells, and these genes may partly mediate the tumorigenic function of EBERs in Burkitt's lymphoma.

<P>A series of four-coordinate boron compounds of the type N,O-(OPhOxZArX)BPh2 or N,O-(OPhOxZNPh2)BPh2 (5a–g) has been prepared by treating triphenylboron (TPB) with2-(4,4-dimethyl-4,5-dihydrooxazol-2-yl)-4-X-arylphenols(HOPhOxZArX; 4a–f) or 2-(4,4-dimethyl-4,5-dihydrooxazol-2-yl)-4-(4-diphenylamino)phenol (HOPhOxZNPh2; 4g). A systematic change in the electronic structures is achieved in these compounds by incorporating electron-withdrawing (EW) and -donating (ED) groups [ArX (X = 4-cyano-, 2,4-difluoro-, 4-chloro-, phenyl, 4-methoxy-, and 4-dimethylaminophenyl) or NPh2] at the 4-position of the phenoxide. The absorption and emission maxima of the ED groups show a significant red-shift compared to those observed in the EW groups. This red-shift suggests that π-conjugation is effectively extended over the arylphenoxides and oxazoline moiety once the boron center has been plugged into the corresponding ligands. The gradual decrease observed in the bandgaps on going from EW to ED groups is found to be in agreement with the increase in oxidation potentials determined by the cyclic voltammetry (CV) experiments. In particular, a Hammet plot between the EW and ED substituents and oxidation potentials confirms the ground state electronic perturbation. Such alterations are attributed mainly to an elevation of the energy levels of the HOMOs), as further confirmed by a series of theoretical calculations on the frontier orbitals of each system. The ED group (-NPh2) substituted compound 5g shows a bipolar character due to intramolecular charge transfer in the complex, with the highest photoluminescence quantum yield being obtained in toluene. This new boron complex was found to function as an emitter in electroluminescence (EL) devices, with a maximum brightness of 2905 cd/m2 at 13 V and a current efficiency of 1.63 cd/A at 6 mA/cm2, with a turn-on voltage of 4.3 V.(© Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
