<P>The effects of nuclear isospin asymmetry on alpha-decay lifetimes of heavy nuclei are investigated within various phenomenological models of the nuclear potential for the alpha particle. We consider the widely used simple square-well potential and Woods-Saxon potential and modify them by including an isospin asymmetry term. We then suggest a model for the potential of the a particle motivated by a microscopic phenomenological approach of the Skyrme force model, which naturally introduces the isospin-dependent form of the nuclear potential for the a particle. The empirical alpha-decay lifetime formula of Viola and Seaborg [J. Inorg. Nucl. Chem. 28, 741 (1966)] is also modified to include isospin asymmetry effects. The obtained alpha-decay half-lives are in good agreement with the experimental data, and we find that including the nuclear isospin effects somehow improves the theoretical results for alpha-decay half-lives. The implications of these results are discussed, and the predictions on the alpha-decay lifetimes of superheavy elements are also presented.</P>

Backgrounds/Aims: We evaluated the clinical usability of immune cell monitoring in adult liver transplantation (LT) recipients. Methods: This study was composed of two parts as using calcineurin phosphatase (CNP) activity assay and ImmuKnow assay independently as in vitro monitoring tools of immune cell function in adult LT recipients. Results: There was a rough correlation between CNP activity and tacrolimus concentration in 33 patients. This association was evident in patients who were only administered tacrolimus, but disappeared after the co-administration of mycophenolate. In 118 healthy individuals, the mean proportion of helper T-cells was 37.4±8.1%. According to ImmuKnow assay, their immune responses were strong in 12 patients (10.2%), moderate in 92 patients (78.0%), and low in 14 patients (11.9%). In 85 patients waiting for LT, there was a rough correlation between the ImmuKnow ATP level and age. Their immune responses were strong in 0 patients (0%), moderate in 8 patients (9.4%), and low in 77 patients (90.6%). There was a difference in the ImmuKnow ATP levels between healthy individuals and patients with liver disease. In 137 LT recipients, there was no correlation between the ImmuKnow ATP levels and tacrolimus concentration. This trend did not change after grouping the patients according to co-administration with mycophenolate. Eight recipients experienced acute rejection, but none showed strong immune response. Conclusions: We think that both CNP activity assay and ImmuKnow assay are too limited to objectively determine the level of immunosuppression. Further studies should be performed to identify other methods for immune function monitoring.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Arterial stiffness and endothelial dysfunction are 2 of the independent predictors for cardiovascular disease, while Acanthopanax senticosus Harms (ASH) is a traditional medicinal plant that can improve cardiovascular health. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of the fruit of ASH on vascular function in apparently healthy subjects. SUBJECTS/METHODS: A 12-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled design, consisting of healthy adults with at least 2 of the following 3 conditions: borderline high blood pressure (BP; 120 mmHg ≤ systolic BP ≤ 160 mmHg or 80 mmHg ≤ diastolic BP ≤ 100 mmHg), smoking (≥10 cigarettes/day), and borderline blood lipid levels (220 ≤ total cholesterol ≤ 240, 130 ≤ low density lipoprotein cholesterol ≤ 165, or 150 ≤ triglyceride ≤ 220 mg/dL). Randomly assigned 76 subjects who received a placebo or 2 doses of ASH fruit (low, 500 mg/day; high, 1,000 mg/day) completed the intervention. Brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV), flow-mediated dilation, carotid intima-media thickness, and BP were measured both at baseline and following the 12-week intervention. Endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) phosphorylation was assessed by western blotting. RESULTS: Compared with the placebo group, the low-dose group showed more significant changes after the 12-week intervention period in terms of systolic BP (0.1 vs. −7.7 mmHg; P = 0.044), baPWV (31.3 vs. −98.7 cm/s; P = 0.007), and the ratio of phospho-eNOS/eNOS (0.8 vs. 1.22; P = 0.037). CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that ASH fruit extract at 500 mg/day has the potential to improve BP and arterial stiffness via endothelial eNOS activation in healthy adults with smoking and the tendency of having elevated BP or blood lipid parameters.
A Novel Short-Time Fourier Transform-Based Fall Detection Algorithm Using 3-Axis Accelerations

<P>The short-time Fourier transform- (STFT-) based algorithm was suggested to distinguish falls from various activities of daily living (ADLs). Forty male subjects volunteered in the experiments including three types of falls and four types of ADLs. An inertia sensor unit attached to the middle of two anterior superior iliac spines was used to measure the 3-axis accelerations at 100 Hz. The measured accelerations were transformed to signal vector magnitude values to be analyzed using STFT. The powers of low frequency components were extracted, and the fall detection was defined as whether the normalized power was less than the threshold (50% of the normal power). Most power was observed at the frequency band lower than 5 Hz in all activities, but the dramatic changes in the power were found only in falls. The specificity of 1–3 Hz frequency components was the best (100%), but the sensitivity was much smaller compared with 4 Hz component. The 4 Hz component showed the best fall detection with 96.9% sensitivity and 97.1% specificity. We believe that the suggested algorithm based on STFT would be useful in the fall detection and the classification from ADLs as well.</P>

<P>Energy saving electrochromic windows were established by controlling the interfacial charge transport using low-HOMO level (<-5 eV) pi-conjugated polymers as bistable electrochromic films and an ionic liquid as the electrolyte. It provided a long bistability (>90min) at the voltage-off state with a high color contrast (879 cm(2) C-1).</P>

Water quality in four major river basin in Korea was managed with Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) System. The unit watershed in TMDL system has been evaluated with Target Water Quality (TWQ) assessment using average water quality, without considering its volume of water quantity. As results, although unit watershed are obtained its TWQ, its allocated loads were not satisfied and vice versa. To solve these problems, a number of TWQ assessments with using Load Duration Curve (LDC) have been studied at other watersheds. The purpose of this study was to evaluate achievement of TWQ with Flow Duration Curve (FDC) and Load Duration Curve(LDC) at 26 unit watersheds in Han river basin. The results showed that achievement rates in TWQ assessment with current method and with LDC were 50~56 % and 69~73%, respectively. Because of increasing about 20% of achievement rates with using LDC, the number of exceeded unit watershed at Han river Basin was decreased about 4~6 unit watersheds.
대학생의 진로소명과 진로결정 자기효능감이 삶의 만족도에 미치는 영향

본 연구는 오늘날 대학생들의 가장 큰 고민인 진로문제를 통해 대학생의 행복을 탐색하고자 하였다. 특히, 자신의 일에 충만함을 느끼고 헌신하도록 하는 목적의식을 의미하는 진로소명에 초점을 두어 진로소명과 진로결정 자기효능감이 삶의 만족에 미치는 영향을 검증하였고 진로소명과 삶의 만족 간의 관계에서 진로결정 자기효능감의 매개효과를 확인하였다. 이를 위해 313명의 대학생을 대상으로 진로소명, 진로결정 자기효능감, 삶의 만족을 포함하는 설문지를 실시하여 그 결과를 분석하였다. 연구결과 첫째, 진로소명과 진로결정 자기효능감, 모두 삶의 만족에 유의한 영향을 미치고 있었고 상대적인 영향력은 진로소명, 진로결정 자기효능감 순이었다. 둘째, 진로결정 자기효능감은 진로소명과 삶의 만족 사이를 부분매개하고 있었다. 마지막으로 본 연구의 시사점과 한계점을 논의하였다. This study aimed to examine the happiness of college students with their career choices, which is the major concern for college students. To be specific, the authors investigated the effects of career calling(a sense of purpose that makes one dedicated to one’s work) on career decision-making self-efficacy and life-satisfaction. For this study, 313 college students participated in the survey that included questions about career calling, career decision-making self-efficacy, and life-satisfaction. The result is that both career calling and career decision-making self-efficacy had significant effect on life-satisfaction. Of the two factors, career calling had relatively more impact on life-satisfaction. In addition, career decision-making self-efficacy partiallly mediated the relationship between career calling and life-satisfaction. Limitations and implications of the current study are discussed.
