<P>The prevalence of resistant genes against β-lactams in 119 <I>Aeromonas</I> strains was determined. A large number (99.2%) of the present fish strains were resistant to one or more β- lactams including ceftiofur, amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, ampicillin, piperacillin and cefpodoxime. Among antibiotic resistance phenotypes, the simultaneous resistance to all β-lactams occurred in 25.2% (n=30) of all strains, which consisted of 18 strains of <I>A. dhakensis</I>, 8 strains of <I>A. caviae</I>, 2 strains of <I>A. hydrophila</I> and only one strain of <I>A. veronii</I>. For exploring genetic background of the antibiotic resistances, multiple PCR assays were subjected to detect β-lactamase-encoding genes, <I>blaTEM</I>, <I>blaOXA-B</I> and <I>blaCTX-M</I>. In the results, the <I>blaTEM-1</I> gene was harbored in all strains, whereas only 3 strains harbored <I>blaOXA</I> gene. In the case of <I>blaCTX-M</I> gene, the gene was detected in 21.0% (25 out of 119) of all strains, which countered with 80% (20 out of 25) of <I>A. dhakensis</I>, 8% (2 out of 25) of <I>A. caviae</I> and 12% (3 out of 25) of <I>A. hydrophila</I>. In addition, most of the <I>blaCTX-M</I> positive strains showed simultaneous resistance to all β-lactams (18 out of 30 strains). In sequence analysis for <I>blaCTX-M</I> genes detected, they were CTX-M group 1-encoding genes including <I>blaCTX-M-33</I> from 3 eel strains of <I>A. dhakensis</I>. Therefore, <I>A. dhakensis</I> obtained from cultured fish could represent a reservoir for spreading genes encoding CTX-M group 1 enzymes and hence should be carefully monitored, especially for its potential risk to public health.</P>

Systemic vasculitis involving the lung is a rare manifestation of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), and secondary vasculitis is considered to have poor prognosis. A 44-year-old man presented with fever and dyspnea of 1 month duration. A chest radiograph revealed bilateral multiple wedge shaped consolidations. In addition, the results of a percutaneous needle biopsy for non-resolving pneumonia were compatible with pulmonary vasculitis. Bone marrow biopsy was performed due to the persistence of unexplained anemia and the patient was diagnosed with MDS. We reported a case of secondary vasculitis presenting as non-resolving pneumonia, later diagnosed as paraneoplastic syndrome of undiagnosed MDS. The cytopenia and vasculitis improved after a short course of glucocorticoid treatment, and there was no recurrence despite the progression of underlying MDS.

Pro-oxidant 3,3`,4,4`,5-pentachlorinated biphenyls 126 (PCB126) is a global environmental contaminant that can induce cellular oxidative stress. Disruption from cellular oxidative stress can be blocked by several nutrient antioxidants like vitamin E. We used the fish model, zebrafish (Danio rerio), to determine if vitamin E can protect against toxicity from the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) ligand PCB126 during zebrafish development, and to show the mechanism by which PCB 126 induces toxic effects. We exposed zebrafish embryos at 8 hours post fertilization (hpf) to PCB126 at a concentration of 100 nM, and compared these fish with a second group that was co-exposed to 100-μM vitamin E and 100-nM PCB126 until 5 days post fertilization (dpf). PCB126 induced pericardial sac edema, yolk sac edema, heart malformation, hemorrhaging, failure of swim bladder inflation, growth retardation and mortality in developing zebrafish larvae. In contrast, 100-μM vitamin E co-exposure did not induce the gross changes seen in the PCB126 treatment group. We found that vitamin E can protect against PCB126 toxicity by inhibiting zebrafish heat shock protein 70 cognate (zfHsc70) down regulation. Also vitamin E inhibited the zebrafish aryl hydrocarbon receptor type-2 (zfAHR2), zebrafish cytochrome P450 1A (zfCYP1A), zebrafish superoxide dismutase-1 (zfSOD1) and upregulated zebrafish superoxide dismutase-2 (zfSOD2) mRNA expression. These data give insights into the use of vitamin E to reduce PCB126-mediated toxicity and into the use of zebrafish embryos for exploring mechanisms underlying the oxidative potential of AHR agonists.

We first established a transgenic zebrafish line carrying a plasmid (phAhRE-EGFP) for detecting developmental toxicities caused by aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) binding toxicants. The plasmid contains the 5` human cytochrome P4501A1 (CYP1A1) upstream sequence, which AhR ligands target, and enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) gene, an accurate and quick, inducible reporter. To evaluate this system, we treated embryos of wild-type and the transgenic fish with four well-known AhR binding toxicants: 3,3`,4,4`,5-pentachlorobiphenyl (PCB126), 2,3,7,8-tetra-chlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), 3-methylcholanthrene (3-MC), and β-naphthoflavone (β-NF). These toxicants induced a dose-dependent increase in morphologic disruption, indicating toxicity at early life-stages. The transgenic zebrafish were sensitive enough to these toxicants to express the CYP1A1 regulated EGFP. Moreover, fluorescence-based quantification of the reporter gene was consistent with dose dependent toxicity of the four model toxicants. In conclusion, the stable transgenic line will allow for extremely rapid and reproducible toxicological profiling of early life-stage embryo development in both aquatic organisms and humans.
Studies on Layered Modulation for SVC Signals in DVB-S2 System
Yi Wang,Seung-Chul Kim,Kye-San Lee,Won Sohn 한국방송·미디어공학회 2008 한국방송공학회 학술발표대회 논문집 Vol.2008 No.-
The paper describes a Layered Modulation using the SVC signals and studies the properties of the modulation with respect to several parameters by the computer simulation. The SVC signals will include a base layer signal and an enhancement signal, and the base layer signal is the more important one in its channel robustness. The parameters will include a carrier frequency, a bandwidth, power level, modulation type and code rate. We analyze the demodulating and decoding process of the Layered Modulation system through several scatter plots. And then we discuss the affect of the layer signal power difference to the BER performance, which also proves the base layer signal is more important than the enhancement layer signal.
