        Background : For cultivation of varieties of ginseng, the pure line selection method, which is to select the best among those cultivated in farms for pedigree breeding, replicated yield trials and regional adaptation trials before registering as a new variety, is widely used. Although there are 25 registered varieties of ginseng in Korea, the quality of ginseng is declining together with the amount of harvest being decreased by 15 - 20% due to the heat injuries and diseases from the warming & abnormal climate. Thus, the needs for development of disaster-resistant varieties with better chances of surviving through high temperature, salts and disease are increasing. Therefore, this study is to cultivate disaster-resistant varieties among those selected for their disaster tolerance and salt tolerance through regional adaptation trials. Methods and Results : As a result of examining the growth characteristics of the selected 2 - 5 year old varieties used in the study, among the 5-year old crops, Goryeo 4 and Eumseong 5 showed superior growth in both above and below aerial parts, and among the 4-year old crops, Eumseong 11 and Cheonryang showed superior growth while the growth in the below aerial parts were satisfactory in the order of Cheonryang > Eumseong 10 > Eumseong 11 > Eumseong 9. Among the 3-year old crops, the most superior growth in both above and below aerial parts was observed in Eumseong 14 with the weight of the below aerial part, root diameter and taproot length at 13.8 g, 11.8 ㎝ and 6.2 ㎝ respectively. Among the 2-year old crops, Eumseong 10 showed the most superior growth in both above and below aerial parts. Conclusion : Based on the above results, Goryeo 4 and Eumseong 5 among the 5-year old crops, Eumseong 11 among the 4-year old crops, Eumseong 14 among the 3-year old crops and Eumseon 10 among the 2-year old crops showed the most superior growth among the selected varieties. The growth characteristics of both above and below aerial parts in each year will continuously be monitored.

      • Co(II) 이온과 N₂O₃계 거대고리 리간드와의 착물 형성에 관한 연구

        The stability constants of the complexes of Co(II) ion with N₂O₃-donor macrocyclic ligands such as 1, 15-diaza-3, 4:12, 13-dibenzo-5, 8, 11-trioxacycloheptadecane(NenOdienH₄):1, 15-diaza-3, 4 : 12, 13-dibenzo-5, 8, 11-trioxacyclooctadecane(NtnOdienH₄) have been determined by uv-vis spectrophotometric method in DMSO solution. In order to obtain the enthalpy and entropy changes of complexation reaction of Co(II) ion with these ligands, the stability constants have been measured at 20-60℃. From the results, the followings have been obtained, 1) In DMSO solution, Co(II) ion forms a 1:1 complex with these ligands. 2) The order of stability constants is NenOdienH₄< NtnOdienH₄. 3) The complexation reaction are exothermic and show the positive entropy changes.

        정신장애인의 직업적응훈련성취수준이 직업유지기간에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 : 서비스 유형의 조절효과

        본 연구의 목적은 정신장애인에게 실시되고 있는 직업적응훈련서비스와 서비스 유형이 직업유지기간에 미치는 영향을 파악하여, 이용자의 주도성이 강조되는 새로운 서비스패러다임에서 우리나라 지역정신보건서비스가 지향해야 할 기준과 효과적인 직업재활서비스 방안을 모색하고자 한다. 조사대상은 만 20세 이상 60세 미만의 성인 정신장애인 142명으로, 사회복귀시설에서 훈련을 받은 후, 최근 2년 간 취업경험이 있거나, 현재 취업하고 있는 정신장애인이다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 개인훈련성취도가 직업유지기간에 미치는 영향을 다중회귀분석으로 검증한 결과, 개인훈련성취도의 하위차원 중 사회기술과 협동심의 영역이 직업유지기간에 정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 서비스 유형이 직업유지기간에 영향을 미치는가를 분석한 결과, 비클럽하우스모델보다 클럽하우스모델이 직업유지기간에 더 정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 끝으로, 개인훈련성취도의 직업유지기간에 미치는 영향에 대한 서비스 유형의 조절효과를 다중회귀분석으로 검증한 결과, 개인훈련성취도의 하위차원 중 작업습관 영역에서 조절효과가 나타났다. The purpose of this research is to examine the effect of the work adjustment training and the type of service for job retention among people with mental illness, and to suggest effective and customer-driven service model for job maintenance. The sample size was 142 people with mental illness who had employment experience for the last 2 years or are working presently after completion of the vocational training from the community mental rehabilitation centers. The data was collected by self-administered survey method from 21st Nov, 2005 to 10th Dec, 2005. The major findings from moderated multiple regressions are as follows: First, the levels of personal presentation and cooperativeness subscale in the accomplishment level have positive effects on duration of job retention. It means that cultivating better social skills is much more important than individual's ability for the people with mental illness to retain the job. Second, the clubhouse model has more positive effects than non-clubhouse model on the duration of job maintenance when comparing the type of service. Lastly, the clubhouse model has a moderating effect on the duration of job retention in the relationship with the level of work habits subscale in the accomplishment level. This suggest that customer driven and voluntary based vocational services are more effective for the people with mental illness.

      • 경구면역을 통한 항원 특이적 IgA 항체 합성에 있어 Cholera Toxin과 Alginate-Microsphere의 효과

        Secretory (S-IgA) isotype antibody (Ab) is known to play an essential role in the primary defense against various infectious agents in mucosal tissue. However, it has been mostly unsuccessful in the induction of antigen (Ag)-specific IgA Ab response in this site by peroral vaccination. In the present study, we investigated the effect of cholera toxin (CI) as a mucosal adjuvant and alginates-microspheres as a carrier on BSA-specific IgA Ab response in gut-associated lymphoid tissue`(GALT). Peroral immunization of BSA plus CT conferred a great BSA-specific IgA response but IgG response on intestinal fluid (IF). In contrast, intraperitoneal immunization of BSA with Freund's adjuvant readily induced BSA-specific IgG response but IgA response in IF. Further, number of CT specific IgA-secreting cells was substantially increased in mesenteric lymph node when CT-encapsulated-VI alginates-microspheres was administered perorally. Taken together, these results indicate that peroral immunization of soluble antigen in combination of CT or microspheres significantly enhances antigen-specific IgA response in GALT.

        Autism and Beauty

        Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the neural activity of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) patients is different from that of normal individuals when performing aesthetic judgments. Methods: We recruited typical ASD patients without savant skills (ASD group, n=17) and healthy controls (HC group, n=19) for an functional magnetic resonance imaging study. All subjects were scanned while performing aesthetic judgment tasks on two kinds of artwork (magnificent landscape images and fractal images). Differences in brain activation between the two groups were assessed by contrasting neural activity during the tasks. Results: The aesthetic judgment score for all images was significantly lower in the ASD group than in the HC group. During the aesthetic judgment tasks, the ASD group showed less activation than the HC group in the anterior region of the superior frontal gyrus, and more activation in the temporoparietal area and insula, regardless of the type of images being judged. In addition, during the aesthetic judgment task for the fractal images, the ASD group exhibited greater neural activity in the amygdala and the posterior region of the middle/inferior temporal gyrus (Brodmann area 37) than the HC group. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that the brain activation patterns associated with aesthetic experiences in ASD patients may differ from those of normal individuals.

        Biocompatibility evaluation of peo-treated magnesium alloy implants placed in rabbit femur condyle notches and paravertebral muscles

        Background: Magnesium alloys have been receiving much attention for use in biodegradable metal implants because of their excellent mechanical properties and biocompatibility. However, their rapid breakdown and low bioactivity can cause the implant to lose mechanical integrity before the bone is completely healed. Moreover, hydrogen gas released during degradation can significantly delay the tissue regeneration process. To solve the instability of magnesium alloys, Zn and Ca can be added to improve the mechanical properties and biocompatibility. One other way to improve the mechanical properties of Mg is plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO), which provides a dense, thick ceramic-like coating on the Mg surface. In this study, high-purity Mg was selected as the control, and Mg-1wt%Zn0.1wt%Ca alloy and PEO-treated Mg-1wt%Zn-0.1wt%Ca alloy were selected as the test materials; the results of radiographic and histological analyses of their biocompatibility are reported herein. Materials and method: Nineteen New Zealand white rabbits were used in the study. Rod-bars (Ø2.7 × 13.6 mm) were placed on both paravertebral muscles, and cannulated screws (Ø2.7x10mm) were placed on both femur condyle notches. Each animal was implanted in all four sites. X-rays were taken at 0, 2, 4, 8, and 12 weeks, micro-CT, and live-CT were taken at 4, 8, and 12 weeks. At weeks 4, 8, and 12, individuals representing each group were selected and sacrificed to prepare specimens for histopathological examination. Result: The results confirm that in vivo, Mg-1wt%Zn-0.1wt%Ca alloy had higher corrosion resistance than high-purity Mg and safely degraded over time without causing possible side effects (foreign body or inflammatory reactions, etc.). In addition, PEO treatment of Mg-1wt%Zn-0.1wt%Ca alloy had a positive effect on fracture recovery by increasing the bonding area with bone. Conclusion: Our results suggest that PEO treatment of Mg-1wt%Zn-0.1wt%Ca alloy can be a promising biomaterials in the field of various clinical situations such as orthopedic and maxillofacial surgerys.

        Manufacture for living supplies of Chestnut wood(Castanea crenata Sieb. et Zucc)

        This study was carried out to manufacture wooden vessels by small diameter wood and wasted wood of Castanea crenata Sieb. et Zucc, which has been largely planted in southern area. We made spice set, tea box set, cookie vessel set, bowl set and accessory set. With the development of edged tools, the human species has been able to fashion wood to change and enhance its environment - one only has to look at the history of all cultures to see examples of wooden artifacts and structures. Even with the development of synthetic materials and the progress of automated, mechanized production of wood and wood products, the raw material is still processed by traditional methods to meet a never-ending demand for products made from this most desirable natural material. Chestnut wood has high added value and natural color grain and is very useful for wooden vessel. Thinned low grade trees can be used to produce wooden vessel. Therefore this result can promote thinning and produce good forestation.

        Analysis of the Major Histocompatibility Complex Class I Antigen Presentation Machinery in Human Lung Cancer

        Susceptibility of 61 strains of Helicobacter pylori to metronidazole was examined by both the disk diffusion method using a cut-off of 15㎜ for resistance and the E test with a cut-off of 8㎎/l. The MIC_50 and MIC_90 by the E test were 2㎎/l and 256㎎/l, respectively. Metronidazole resistance was found in 22(36%) out of the 61 H. pylori strains by the E test and in three additional strains by the disk diffusion method. Amongst the latter three isolates, the MICs by the E test were 4㎎/l, 6㎎/l, and 6㎎/l, respectively. These figures are one log_2 or half log_2 dilution lower than the cut-off of 8㎎/l recommended as resistance for the E test. All 22 metronidazole resistant H. pylori isolates by the E test that were subjected to random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) fingerprinting showed different DNA fingerprints. Interestingly, >90% of resistant isolates possess two common DNA bands of 0.4 and 0.9kb. This study demonstrates that the results of the disk diffusion method for testing H. pylori susceptibility to metronidazole correlates well with that of the E test. The criteria for interpretation need to be internationally standardized so that the results from different centers can be compared.

        'Kowon', a New Korean Ginseng Cultivars with High Yield and Alternaria Blight Resistance

        Recently, there has been increased attention to the development of new plant cultivars with enhanced resistance to biotic and abiotic stress. To develop ginseng cultivars with such traits, systematic breeding programs and comprehensive field studies are prerequisites. In this study, we applied a pure-line selection method to identify a ginseng cultivar with enhanced stress resistance. Phenotypic and agronomic characteristics, seed yield, and physiological responses to biotic and abiotic stresses were investigated according to the guidelines of the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV). In the newly developed 'Kowon' cultivar, the time of emergence, flowering, and berry maturity were intermediate between those of the controls, 'Yunpoong' and 'Chunpoong'. The stem length of 'Kowon' was intermediate, whereas the root length was shorter and the main root diameter was greater than those of 'Chunpoong'. In local adaptability tests conducted in three regions, the yield of 'Kowon' was $666kg{\cdot}10a^{-1}$; 27% and 4% higher than that of 'Chunpoong' and 'Yunpoong'. Diseases such as Alternaria blight, Phytophthora blight, mulberry mealybug, and nematode infestation did not occur in 'Kowon'; and it also exhibited moderate resistance to damping-off and anthracnose. In these cases, yellow spots occurred on aerial parts and the rusty skin of the root, and it exhibited moderate resistance at high temperatures. Our study demonstrates that 'Kowon', which has a high root weight and enhanced biotic/abiotic stress resistance, is a superior cultivar that could increase farmers' income.
